Sick of hairdressers not getting me the colour I want?

I want to go silver. I show them the exact colour I want and I alway end up with ash blonde mixed with warm blonde pieces. I hate it.

I’ve had six sessions already and probably paid near £1K now and still nothing.

This is currently my colour and it’s definitely not silver.

She didn't achieve the colour with her natural hair though. Because it would have been utterly ruined. Grey hair is very difficult to do and it will ruin your hair. And cost you a fortune.

bigageap · 26/11/2023 15:36

I have had the silver hair and I have naturally light hair and took a fair few goes. And then it’s some serious upkeep. I love it though but I’d be very careful having tried so often since August that your hair will be ruined. I had an all over colour no highlights and a very silver/grey toner and then pricey shampoo/conditioner. I think you are probably being impatient.

But that doesn’t matter.

I’ve already spent a fortune. Been through multiple bleaching sessions, I know how to look after hair.

Being impatient? I wouldn’t say a year and 3 months is being impatient.

Yes it can take ages and quite frankly your hair may never take it!

Then the hairdressers should say that, they do enough tests beforehand. I always have a consultation.

Op, Kim Kardashian wears wigs. The silver hair in the photo was almost certainly a wig.

Caerulea · 26/11/2023 16:02

I've done silver hair, I loved it! And it did look shiny & healthy but I've pin straight hair which helps & don't use any heat styling or products.
But it's a lot of work to get there, especially if your base is darker or already dyed with things like red, blue.

One thing to bear in mind is most of the photos online will be edited to remove all yellow/green tones. In your eg pic, you can tell its been filtered.

It shouldn't have taken this long to get you there if it is possible. Have you asked your stylist?

Yes she obviously wears wigs. But her hair has also been dyed silver and platinum white at certain points.

No it hasn't. She wears wigs. As do the vast majority of celebs where you see their hair colour change almost weekly

TeenLifeMum · 26/11/2023 16:31

Silver is really hard to achieve. You’re not far off, you just need purple shampoo and purple conditioner. That’ll take out the warmer ones without damaging your hair.

It was all wigs, op.

I tried to go silver just before lockdown and "maintained" it for a couple of years. I say "maintained" because it became impossible to look after, turned the colour of used chewing gum quickly and ruined my hair - loads of breakage and damage which has only really now grown out There were probably three or four occasions when it looked nice.

I think your expectations are a touch high!

angeltinsel · 26/11/2023 16:40

OP - your hair looks lovely as it is. I'm the opposite to you. I am trying to cover my silver/grey hairs

SeenYourArse · 26/11/2023 16:42

The people saying just pop to Superdrug and buy a box colour 😂😂😂😂👌🏼 this will absolutely definitely destroy your hair and be a patchy mess guaranteed. DO NOT do this. Secondly phone your hairstylist and explain the way you feel, ask them to be frank and say if they can deliver what you want at your next appointment if not go somewhere else.

SnowflakeSparkles · 26/11/2023 16:42

Not RTFT so sorry if this has been mentioned, but I used to do my hair that colour myself and it’s all in the toning. Most hair dressers probably consider those fashion colours as simply overtoned blonde so may be reluctant to do it? But that is basically what to do.

I used to add a drop of deep blue toner of any kind to a Bleach London product and my hair would be whitest white. A couple drops more blue would give a silvery tone.

You need to be light enough to do this though, and not all of your hair will be as it has nice lowlights and darker bits.

P.S I feel you on the money. I’m writing this as I’m growing my phone waiting for my bleach to develop as I DIY my hair. Hairdressers in my area always seem to give everyone the same greenish tone of blonde where it’s ligjtened to a yellow and then a blue based toner is used because everyone asks for ash. If you mix blue ash with yellow hair though it has a greenish tinge!

Pigeonqueen · 26/11/2023 16:46

To get your hair that silver you’ll need to bleach it a lot more than it is now, it needs to practically be white to begin with and then you need the toner added to make it silver. The hairdressers are probably wary of bleaching it so much as it can literally make it snap off - I speak from experience.

Do the hairdressers warn you before taking the money that it might not work?

What anyone else thinks of silver is irrelevant if you want to try it out on your hair. Its reasonable if a hairdresser says "this won't work" on your hair or even "I won't do it because it will look awful" but if they are taking your money for a promise of silver and not delivering it then I'd be looking for them to correct the colour or refund.

SmokySilverShine · 26/11/2023 16:48

KK’s is probably a wig. I know someone who dyed their bleach blonde hair silver and hated it, it was drab grey.
Dont do it

LolaSmiles · 26/11/2023 16:52

You've still got several levels of lightness to go before a silver will take. I'm not surprised they've not done it in one go. If it's taken multiple times to get that light then doing so much in one go would probably wreck your hair.

Once you've used that much bleach you're also going to need a dedicated toner and purple shampoo routine, which is also very drying.

hermioneee · 26/11/2023 16:55

I saw the episode where kks hair got dyed to silver. It took something like 24 hours and multiple dye and bonding treatments to achieve it. I really don't think it's possible for civilians.
So yes your hairdresser should tell you this.

paisley256 · 26/11/2023 16:56

I can defnitely see why you want it OP it's gorgeous. I absolutely love the colour you have too. However i think silver is an incredibly hard colour to achieve and maintain so I'd go with the wig option.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 26/11/2023 16:57

That looks platinum blonde to me. It'll take all the warmth from your face and make you look older.

The colour you are is gorgeous.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 26/11/2023 16:59

That silver colour is gorgeous.

Can you maybe look at the business pages of various hairdressers and find one that's already managed to achieve that look on a client?

purplehue · 26/11/2023 17:03

Maybe try a purple shampoo and it will be less warm.
