Sick of hairdressers not getting me the colour I want?

I want to go silver. I show them the exact colour I want and I alway end up with ash blonde mixed with warm blonde pieces. I hate it.

I’ve had six sessions already and probably paid near £1K now and still nothing.

This is currently my colour and it’s definitely not silver.

@hollyhockss I’m in exactly the same boat. Don’t listen to people saying it’s not possible, or it’ll kill your hair, and for gods sake don’t buy a box dye!!
My hair is naturally dark mousey brown and I’ve been silver. Lost my good hairdresser and now have a similar colour to you. I hate any warmth in my hair but each new hairdresser I’ve tried just has no idea how to get it right. I know it’s possible as I’ve had it before.
First thing you should do is find a better hairdresser. I’m on number 4 this year on my quest to love my hair colour again.

Olaplex can work miracles though. I have bleached my dark hair to get a good base for an intense colour. The difference in texture and breakage in bleaching without Olaplex in the mix, vs with, was astonishing. Will never bleach without it now. It's pricey but worth it.

The bayalage is hard to do on myself, I'd be happy to pay someone to do that if I could trust them to bleach it strongly enough but I know no hairdresser would so it's diy. The Brad Mondo bayalage tutorial gave me decent results

shoeawsome · 26/11/2023 17:44

Use this on your current hair! Leave it on for about 10 mins!

I use it all the time on my highlights!

OP you need a scalp bleach to achieve that colour. Has your hairdresser been scalp bleaching? Lots of hair dressers won’t do them

Jkrowlingsarmy · 26/11/2023 18:01

Was just about to add the above comment - that’s bleach and then toner toner toner. Your hair will be wrecked. If you want to do it go short as less hair will be damaged. Kim k’s looks great but most of that is extensions.

YorkshirePuddingBelongs · 26/11/2023 18:03

Honestly OP I wish hairdressers would just tell customers when colours are unachievable. There’s lots of science around what can and can’t be coloured, I learnt it all in lockdown when failed attempts to go red happened.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 26/11/2023 18:05

I have my hair this colour OP and it's all in the toner. Are you going to the same salon or have you tried a few? Can you look on social media for salons who post colour pictures?

That's my colour, I wouldn't exactly say it looks ruined or flat like some of the previous posters claim your hair will look. I've had mine like that for a few years now and bleached since I was 16 without an issue.

Lee Stafford purple shampoo and conditioner seems to be the best for maintaining the silver along with either the matching mask or home bargains do one called pro-v in a little silver pot that's fantastic and about £2.99.

Hair doesn't "recover." Your hair strands are dead. Once they are damaged, they are damaged for good. Certain products can help a bit, but nothing repairs heavily damaged hair. Hair product companies try to convince us it's possible to turn back the clock on fried hair, but it's not.

Olaplex doesn’t do anything for my hair unfortunately- neither did K18.

Am I having a conversation with myself?

I think we need to double team to find the source. I’ve been to four hairdressers too. I should have known at my last appointment - but she teaches hair bleaching so I trusted her.

Just so frustrating. And I’m bored. 21 months of having a colour I dislike is long enough:

My hair is silver. It’s taken me 64 years to get it this colour, and doesn’t cost me a penny!!!

Tennis😄

Are you a hairdresser?

Whether she is or not, she's right.

I used to be a hairdresser. You can't put hair right once you've got it into a state, the only thing to do is cut it off.

Isometimeswonder · 26/11/2023 18:25

What are you wanting from this thread OP?

Raspberryfruitella · 26/11/2023 18:49

Feel your pain OP.
After years of pursuing I have ash blonde hair which is silver (for about a week until the toner washes completely out) after I leave the hairdressers. In it's natural state my hair has a lot of warmth but it is starting to go more grey now which is really the only way the ash tones catch.

My current hairdresser is amazing with colours, but it's taken about 3 years to get to this stage and she's had to work hard to get the toners right (I think she mixes a few different colours to get it right) and the natural aging process has a lot to do with it. I use Fanola purple shampoo once a week to tone down any warmth coming through (tried the Fanola conditioner too but it left my hair quite blue).

Crikeyalmighty · 26/11/2023 18:50

Mm - your hair is exactly how I want mine- it's more golden then that at moment- I'm commenting so I can go back onto this and show hairdresser 'your ' photo-

hoxtonbabe · 26/11/2023 19:00

That’s the colour I am. I have black Afro hair but I also have a very short number 2 cut so I don’t worry about damage as there’s hardly anything to damage, lol.

I Just do it myself now as I was fed up of the mixed results whenever I got it done with the hairdresser

i use Goldwell bleach ( I have to do this twice though to get it light enough due to having Afro hair) then I use Goldwell toner 10v ( although today I used 3/4 10v and 1/4 10 bs) and it’s probably the most silvery I have got it, lol. The BS was supposed to make it a bit less silver than usual but nope more silvery.. I can’t complain I still like it

The key is getting it light enough/ the right level, for the toner to take…

Flickersy · 26/11/2023 19:05

I'm sure your normal, natural hair is perfectly lovely.

If you're willing to throw away £1,000 because your normal hair isn't good enough for you then I think the saying "a fool and their money" applies here.

SurelySmartie · 26/11/2023 19:17

You need to not have any warm blonde put in are you making that clear to the hairdresser?
Then over-use something like Fanola No Yellow and that will make it more like the second photo. You can see a slight violet cast with the silver blonde.

coolkatt · 26/11/2023 19:27

ffs the op
wants what she wants. if u don't like it big deal. she's not asking opinions.

greylamp · 26/11/2023 19:35

My hair was that silvery colour a few years ago but I’m naturally dark blonde so not sure if this applies to you. I just got a full head of highlights (using just bleach so no warm blonde) and then the hairdresser used a toner and I used L’Oréal professional purple shampoo weekly to maintain

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 26/11/2023 19:36

Get a wig as the easiest way to get the colour you want for a night out and Kim wears wigs and has said how badly her hair has been damaged, so all her different looks and styles, lengths, colours are all wigs. Your hair is lovely but I do also love the silver/grey look.

Soontobe60 · 26/11/2023 19:39

Aquamarine1029 · 26/11/2023 15:18

Fucking hell, please don't do this. Instant regret in a box.

Well, I do agree - in fact I’ve never seen anyone with a box dye in unnatural colours look good after the first week! I was being facetious 😂

Shadowonasun · 26/11/2023 19:39

These threads are always full of 'why do you want such hair, it's horrible' and 'your own hair is so much nicer' people. It's irrelevant. OP wants silver hair, she likes it. She doesn't like her current hair. it doesn't matter if you think it's horrible, it's not your hair.

As for the rest, I certainly sympathize, OP. I used to have an opposite problem, I wanted warm blonde (to the yellow side of the spectrum, not grey/cold). And multiple hairdressers still did the 'trendy' cold grey/ash look. They listen to you, look at the pics you've brought, nod their heads multiple times. And do whatever the fuck they want anyway. No explanations, no 'this is not possible, but THIS is possible', nothing. Multiple hairdressers from cheaper to higher end, not just one.

I don't care if the colour is 'trendy', I don't care if 'everyone wants it' - I DON'T.

Gave up in the end. Grew out my natural brown hair and won't go near them ever again. ££££ wasted and fuck all to show for it.

spidermonkeys · 26/11/2023 19:40

Dove hair just won't take the colour unfortunately. Wigs are the way to go to get the colour you want I'm afraid.
