To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

CeruleanSal · 24/11/2023 15:10

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

Yes but are you a Catholic neither or a protestant neither?

That's exactly what I was going say. Grin

my sister has the toaster and kitchen mixer in a cupboard under the counter behind the drawer.
it has a lift and when she needs either she presses a button and up they zoom. plugged in and ready to use.

Now that is cool. Although you would have to remember not to put stuff on top of where they appear.

Haven't RTFT but I and my Catholic parents all keep our toasters on the counter

I think we need the Pope to comment

Little did I know as a naive English atheist!

Protestants put the toaster in a cupboard, catholics keep it on the countertop.

Are you a Catholic and sil a protestant who is imposing her protestant traditions on your dB?

😂😂😂

Worktop - think it was part of Vatican II.

Gnomegnomegnome · 24/11/2023 16:07

Ours is in a cupboard because we barely use it and need the space.

I agree! I hope Papa Francesco's next encyclical is on where to keep your toaster to stay onside with the big man

You're obviously a closet protestant then.

Bit boring, that. 🤣🙈

How is it rude?

It sounded cluttered and full of tat to her ( and me). I mean various biros- what for? enormous magazines to me just signals gathering gust. Bowls full of stuff- why? They can be stored in a drawer out of sight.

You might like to be your island/kitchen counters but you can also understand some prefer the minimalistic approach.

It was rude because you said it was tat and that she should throw it away.
It's one thing to disagree on what you think should be in a kitchen, but 'stuff' isn't 'tat'.
What if you don't have room in a drawer? What if you quite like a pot if different colour biros within easy access? You might not like that, but it's rude to suggest someone should throw them away.

I know someone who kept their tv remote control in a drawer under the tv stand. Every time they wanted to change channels they had to get up, walk over to it, get the remote out, change channels, put it back in the drawer again and go and sit down. Confused

SiobhanSharpe · 24/11/2023 16:11

I've just had my kitchen refitted and I wanted a 'gadget cupboard' where the toaster, food processor, coffee grinder etc all live. The rationale behind it was to clear lots of stuff from the counter tops as there's not a lot of actual work space. Everything is plugged in there too, so there's no cord clutter.
But what is still needed is a sliding bottom/tray to the cupboard so I can easily pull the various items forward onto the adjacent counter top.
As it is i have to just grab and pull forward which is ok for the toaster, mini-chopper etc but the processor is a beast. So a work in progress.

I didn't say she should throw it away, but 'stuff' did sound like junk to me as the other items were listed Certainly didn't mean to be rude

Now that’s just brilliant 😂

It's just a cupboard to keep all the things you've bought because you thought they were useful but many of which never get used. Air fryer, bread maker, stand mixer, slow cooker, spiraliser, that sort of thing.

If you get really fancy, you can fit them with roll up doors so you can set them up with and electricity supply and the items on shelves ready to be used and then roll down the doors when you don't want your kitchen to look like a branch of Currys.

I assumed it was a posh name for extension sockets !

OK, I've had to scroll back and check the attribution.

Someone else said it should be thrown away, I said that this was rude, you challenged me on that and I explain why it was rude, thinking you had said to throw it away. Sorry. The usernames got put in a cupboard lost along the way.

I was the one who said it should be thrown away. Someone else said they have a bowl of hairbands on the kitchen counter. Bleugh. I stand by it, no need to have bowls of dusty crap in the kitchen!

It's an old joke Scorchio - are you a Catholic Muslim or a Protestant Muslim. The joke is very much on NI's obsession with the old divide, not on you. Ochon didn't mean any offence.

Appliances live in thr cupboard. Apart from the kettle. And the kitchenAid mixer which is beautiful

I have 3 containers of hair bobbins and clips on the worktop, as well as two hairbrushes belonging to the DC, not to mention the microwave (obviously with all of the important paperwork in the house precariously piled on top), toaster, container of wooden spoons, butter dish, weighing scales, bottles of squashand sundry other crap. And that's before you get to the windowsill.

sensationalsally · 24/11/2023 16:34

As others have said, for an item that is used once a day, for about 5 minutes, it seems mad to have it sitting out taking up worktop space. I always keep it in a cupboard.

Oh absolutely no offense was taken, I'm aware of the whole Catholic/Protestant running joke with toasters, it's very much a trope 😆Ireland is renowned for them
