To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

When we did our kitchen we got one of those full height pantry cupboards put in, and I was thinking about keeping the toaster in there. However, once it was finished, I fretted about the heat from the toaster rising up and spoiling the underside of the shelves in the top part of the cupboard, so I moved it back onto the worktop.

The pantry cupboard now has a bread bin and coffee paraphernalia in it, so when making toast we have to open the cupboard, get the bread out, move round the massive open door to put the bread in the toaster and close the pantry door. Not sure this has made my life any easier, although to be fair we don't have toast most days...

My DM doesn’t do that but refuses to run the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher on over night or when she’s out.

This is despite having a trip switch in the house which works to stop fires… overloading electricity.

She tries to tell me not to leave mine on overnight etc and I just don’t tell her now if I do!

I don't think you quite understand how fires are caused in tumbles washers and dishwashers. It's nowt to do with overloading of electricity and a stupid thing to do running them unattended. Especially overnight.

That’s what @Vroomfondleswaistcoat is asking, though — why the desire for bare kitchen surfaces? People write about them on here as though they’re some kind of unquestioned pinnacle of domestic aspiration or something.

I have a large (temporary) kitchen, and a pantry, and our work surfaces have kettle, toaster, food processor, scales, books, plants, fruit a radio, jars of serving spoons, tongs, salad servers, a wire tray of things cooling etc etc. I mean, assuming you have enough space to chop and roll out etc, I don’t see the issue?

Because it all looks so messy and untidy. I’m not Mrs Hinch (thank god) but I hate having loads of stuff everywhere. Going to someone’s house and they have one small space to chop them barely anywhere to plate up because there is an abundance of shite all over the countertops… it’s not hygienic or nice to look at!

gamerchick · 24/11/2023 15:55

Although I'm seeing that people don't have the common sense to yanno, let your toaster cool down before putting it away. Grin

I would think this is a fire hazard! You're not even really meant to position them under cupboards because of the build up of heat. I wouldn't do this!

😂

I've not got a huge kitchen but the kettle, slow cooker and toaster are out all the time - as is an enormous quantity of magazines, my current paperback, various biros, and bowls full of 'stuff'.

the second half of that part makes me feel a bit queasy. What a load of tat and clutter! Why! Throw it away!

That's a bit rude. Granted, the magazines probably don't need to be within easy access all the time, but the paperback, biros and the 'stuff' is probably used most days. I have a pot of pens, my iPad (with the Kindle App so essentially a book) and various places where bits and bobs (gym band, spare change, buttons that need replacing, safety pins, hair bobbles). I think the kitchen is as good a place as any to keep these household items.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 24/11/2023 15:56

mine goes away but i have a tiny kitchen and need the counter space

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 24/11/2023 15:57

Don't have enough storage space to put the toaster away - plus who wants to drag it out every morning then put it away again? And if you didn't have toast for, lets say a week, it would have been pushed to the back of the cupboard, loads of stuff would have got piled up in front of it and you'd end up using the grill and never seeing the toaster again. Though perhaps that's just us...

Protestants put the toaster in a cupboard, catholics keep it on the countertop.

Are you a Catholic and sil a protestant who is imposing her protestant traditions on your dB?

😂😆

The amount of times this has been said to me for keeping ours in the cupboard, I'm in Ireland but am neither

Caspianberg · 24/11/2023 15:58

Yes
we had a new kitchen last year. There’s an appliance breakfast cupboard. The doors open and slide away like pocket doors, and it’s holds hot water kettle, toaster, and sparkling water Aarke. It’s not under a tiny shelf as it’s full height in there. I live I can hide away everything and worktops stay clear. It’s a small kitchen so nothing on worktop is amazing.
Also have converted old hall built in cupboard to small
pantry. The microwave lives there. Electric was added to both cupboards during refurb

Verified by a sample of one lapsed Catholic.

I'm a lapsed Catholic and I have always kept it on the worktop and so does my mother, still a practising Catholic.

So this looks statistically valid. 😁

slithytoveisascientist · 24/11/2023 15:59

Mine is in cupboard on a tray

notforonesecond · 24/11/2023 15:59

My mum keeps hers in a cupboard, it drives me insane!

cmaalofshit · 24/11/2023 16:00

I'm a Catholic and my toaster lives on the side.

TeenLifeMum · 24/11/2023 16:00

I use saucepans daily but still put them away when not in use.

Abra1t · 24/11/2023 16:00

But seriously, why do we have to live in houses in such a way that it looks as though nobody lives in the house?

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 24/11/2023 16:01

My DD26 has ADHD and part of that is if you can't see it, it doesn't exist. So if we put it away she would never get it out and use it 😊

How is it rude?

It sounded cluttered and full of tat to her ( and me). I mean various biros- what for? enormous magazines to me just signals gathering gust. Bowls full of stuff- why? They can be stored in a drawer out of sight.

You might like to be your island/kitchen counters but you can also understand some prefer the minimalistic approach.

Yes but are you a Catholic neither or a protestant neither?

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 24/11/2023 16:02

I have a dualit toaster, it’s meant to be out surely. My kitchen would look barren without anything out

Animallover87 · 24/11/2023 16:02

@Abra1t it makes me feel calm. I feel anxious when there's stuff everywhere.

ColleenDonaghy · 24/11/2023 16:03

Knew this thread title would attract the NI posters, like moths to a flame, or Irish posters to a funeral thread. Grin

We're atheists, but Catholic atheists, so the toaster is on the worktop. Obviously.

I do like a kitchen that looks used, it's more homely.

greenacrylicpaint · 24/11/2023 16:03

my sister has the toaster and kitchen mixer in a cupboard under the counter behind the drawer.
it has a lift and when she needs either she presses a button and up they zoom. plugged in and ready to use.

sounds amazing! I badly wanted pocket doors during my kitchen refurb

snoozylulu · 24/11/2023 16:04

Haven't RTFT but I and my Catholic parents all keep our toasters on the counter
