This sounds bizarre and I think it is really. Dsd is in year 6 and they are having the sex ed programme. Anyway, this week it was all about pregnancy and birth. The teacher has just returned from maternity leave and imo went into way too much detail for 10 and 11 year olds(discussing stitches etc. dsd was very intrigued, arriving home with a lot of questions!!) but most astonishingly showed them her breast to explain how the baby feeds. Now this is nothing new to dsd per se who has seen me bf all year but I was amazed. Dh wanted to go in and complain today and I received a couple of phone calls asking me to sign a petition "We think that this teacher needs further training etc." Quite moderate in tone really. AIBU or was this teacher totally wrong?

My first reaction on reading this was shock but on reflection I think it's OK. These aren't teenage boys so it could not have been construed sexually. Actually, I think she was brave and it was a good thing to do.

That is just crazy! Very unprofessional! I think she needs to be reported to the administration!

i can't believe some people are actually trying to defend her actions. making excuses about her being hormonal/immersed in new motherhood/ not back in the work mode mindset. if she was not ready to come back to work she should not have done so.what she did was completely unprofessional and if it were my childs teacher i would not be signing a petition to get her further training,i would be signing one demanding her termination from my childs school or else i'd be withdrawing this terms fees.

Branflake..some of those children definitely would have looked at this in a sexual way..Ds is in year 6 and the range is incredible. Some are like little children still (ds)and some are like teenagers, taller than me with boobs of their own .Ds would have been utterly freaked out. Not at the boob...but at the fact that a person in position of power over them was exposing themselves to him. He would have found it so confusing.

I'm trying to view this dispassionately, but I'm on the verge of wetting myself laughing at MB's imaginary science teacher whipping out his nads....

Cam you keep saying that this teacher will be sacked. She'll be sacked if she's generally a poor teacher and the Head can use this as a reason to terminate her employment. If she's generally a well-regarded teacher the school would try hard NOT to sack her. A petition from the parents might force the issue. I'm feeling increasingly sorry for her the more I see her being villified on here..

I don't think she is being villified, I think the ridiculous situation she created is being ridiculed, that's all.

Given the topic was "pregnancy and birth" and she was discussing BF i understand why she may have (erroneously)done this. maybe just a loosening of associations

reminds me of when at school we had a Student teacher who in RE told us the bible was not based on facts (so no wine into water then) rather a narrative exploring morality and behaviour...well some parents went apoplectic, wanting him sacked, muttering about petitions etc.
