Teacher exposing breast.

This sounds bizarre and I think it is really. Dsd is in year 6 and they are having the sex ed programme. Anyway, this week it was all about pregnancy and birth. The teacher has just returned from maternity leave and imo went into way too much detail for 10 and 11 year olds(discussing stitches etc. dsd was very intrigued, arriving home with a lot of questions!!) but most astonishingly showed them her breast to explain how the baby feeds. Now this is nothing new to dsd per se who has seen me bf all year but I was amazed. Dh wanted to go in and complain today and I received a couple of phone calls asking me to sign a petition "We think that this teacher needs further training etc." Quite moderate in tone really. AIBU or was this teacher totally wrong?

Am I being a prude? I bf in public and don't think that I am totally uptight about such stuff but my gut does tell me it was inappropriate. The fact that dd has talked about nothing since tells me that it was too much for her and that it was the wrong context.

BTW, I would not sign a petition over it. I would however go into school and explain my concerns. As I said before I don't think this constitutes good professional conduct in the classroom. I would want to make sure it was not likely to be repeated.

If they wish to demonstrate breastfeeding, then show a baby being fed discretely by its mothe. But don't just get a breast out in the classroom!

Moomin · 12/03/2008 15:59

I have to agree that it's very ill-considered and she probably thought she was doing something quite natural and spontaneous and harmless. But we live in a fairly prudish society as it is, plus I think it will come across as more than a bit odd to some people - and to those parents who think there are perverts on every corner will probably completely freak out.

babybore · 12/03/2008 15:59

Those in favour of petitioning make me think of someone like Bree from desperate housewives.

There's no harm in getting them to understand and SEE that breasts do not have to be sexual objects. God knows, they're objectified enough later on.

Rec she was probably a) a bit of a hippy or b) full of the delirious joys of mothering and bf a small baby. yep, it was definitely brave.

yanbu

largeginandtonic · 12/03/2008 16:01

Hmmmn i just dont know tbh. All i can think of is another woman whipping her breast out in one of my dts class, in context or not, would make me uncomfortable. I think it was unwise of her.

I think a petition is a little extreme and a meeting with her would probably be better.

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 16:03

Why would a penis be inapprpriate? If in context to a biology lesson about the male sexual organs, and just explaining what bits were what, what they looked like, how they all fitted together.

Or a bare bottom? When explaining the digestive system perhaps?

I am not a prude but I do think there is a time and place. And I do not think a classroom is the right place for a teacher to expose these parts of his/her body.

NadineBaggott · 12/03/2008 16:03

totally out of order

bamboostalks · 12/03/2008 16:03

I really don't want her to get the sack, one mum phoned me just now to say that she had gone to the head teacher and the head was investigating but asked her not to publicise this so I may leave it at that. Tbh it is quite a liberal school, kids wear own clothes and call teachers by first names so maybe I am making too much of it. Will have to convince dh though.

Don't tell him then

PrettyCandles · 12/03/2008 16:04

YANBU. Children do need to know about childbirth, breastfeeding, etc, but they don't need to know all the gory details, and they certainly don't need to have a boob flashed at them. I'd be quite happy for a teacher to demonstrate breastfeeding, with the actual baby of course. But a breast with baby attached is nurturing, not sexual, whereas a breast without baby attached is sexual, or, depending on situation, clinical, but either way inappropriate.

SoupDragon · 12/03/2008 16:04

"If they wish to demonstrate breastfeeding, then show a baby being fed discretely by its mother"

Except if they're feeding discretely, it's not going to show the class anything at all about how the baby does it.

I think it's odd but not outrageous.

Flynnie · 12/03/2008 16:06

Did the teacher think that they were unfamiliar with what breasts look like? I fail to see how showing it can demonstrate bf without the baby.

mrsruffallo · 12/03/2008 16:08

I don't see the point either. It's obvious what breastfeeding means
Exposing a naked breast is futile unless she squirted milk out of it or something

jesuswhatnext · 12/03/2008 16:08

this is a load of of old tits

i know that there are several mnetters who are primary teachers, ask them if they woould be happy to show sore bits, purple nipples and leaky stains to a 35 kids!!!

get a grip you lot!

If it real I am sure it will be in the tabloids by the weekend.

babybore · 12/03/2008 16:12

When I went to antenatal classes at Queen Charlotte they used a knitted uterus to demonstrate how a baby would be born alongside a real life birthing video - guess which one painted the more accurate picture? I know that logic doesn't extend very far here but I really don't think there's anything to worry about. Ok I've made my point several times now so will (try and) stop.

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 16:14

Fine, so if the teacher felt that the children did need to see a breast - and as I said before her lesson will have been planned to take into account such questionning - she should have shown an approved video. Not got her own breast out

babybore · 12/03/2008 16:18

Much more interesting to see a real breast though!

soapbox · 12/03/2008 16:19

I think it is not inappropriate to have a discussion about breastfeeding and the mechanics thereof, but exposing her breast is no different to copulating with a fellow teacher to demonstrate how babies are conceived. Diagramatic representations are the norm in the latter case and should have been used in the former.

hecate · 12/03/2008 16:19

teacher whips out her boob to show kids how a baby is fed?

Come on, pull the other one, it's lactating!

colditz · 12/03/2008 16:20

I'm sure page 3 of The Sun has never blown past anyone under the age of 18 then.

theBOD · 12/03/2008 16:20

of course sign the petition. if she had got out her more private bits to explain where the child came out of would that be acceptable?or a male teacher exposing himself to a class of primary school kids to explain where semen comes from?

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 16:20

Oh yes, no doubt far more intersting. As has been heard, it has certainly got the children all talking. Doesn'e make it appropriate however.
