Teacher exposing breast.

This sounds bizarre and I think it is really. Dsd is in year 6 and they are having the sex ed programme. Anyway, this week it was all about pregnancy and birth. The teacher has just returned from maternity leave and imo went into way too much detail for 10 and 11 year olds(discussing stitches etc. dsd was very intrigued, arriving home with a lot of questions!!) but most astonishingly showed them her breast to explain how the baby feeds. Now this is nothing new to dsd per se who has seen me bf all year but I was amazed. Dh wanted to go in and complain today and I received a couple of phone calls asking me to sign a petition "We think that this teacher needs further training etc." Quite moderate in tone really. AIBU or was this teacher totally wrong?

Would be interesting to see what people from the Nordic countries would think about this.

Having read this thread I wonder if Britain's low breast-feeding rates are as much to do with our problems with nudity as with the lack of breast-feeding support in this country.

I understand the fact that she is a teacher is a problem, but somehow I don't think the people that are complaining are worried about future her authority in the class....

Cam · 13/03/2008 17:05

Those examples are with parental consent.

redadmiral · 13/03/2008 17:06

...or even the future of...

Cam · 13/03/2008 17:10

redadmiral, its not about nudity per se (in case that's what you think I have a "problem" with - I've done my fair share of topless sunbathing).

Its about context.

redadmiral · 13/03/2008 17:15

Sorry. Didn't mean to come across as stroppy. I just wanted to give an example...

I don't really mind about this either way. All I can think is that it would have given me and DP (and DD1) a bloody good laugh that evening if it had happened at our school.

Also, on reflection, I'd prefer THAT teacher to the angry, sarcastic, shouting teacher DD1 has at the mo. Unfortunately I don't think they'd even get rid of her if she stripped naked - they have overlooked such terrible behaviour from her already...

Elasticwoman · 13/03/2008 21:22

I do think there's a difference between public breastfeeding which I find quite acceptable, and exposing a breast when there is no baby about. Bizarre, and serves no purpose.

ilovewashingnappies · 13/03/2008 21:38

I work in a 6th form college/secondary schools and I wouldn't DARE breast feed anywhere on the premises except in depths of staff room in an 'emergency'.

However positive I feel about breastfeeding in public the threat of a reputation that has any naked/sexual/bonkers connatations puts me right off.

And little kids - who may not understand...hmmmm

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 14/03/2008 07:49

What happened re the petition and has anyone spoken to the teacher/Head?

MrsMacaroon · 14/03/2008 08:40

the Daily Mail would have a field day with this one...

What if there hadbeen any muslim children in the class?? The parents would really have kicked off then and no-one woudl even question why they were so angry. From what I've read it seems pre-schools and schools are becoming sricter on contact with children - even being able to hug them if they fall over in case it's seen as something more than it is which is idiculous but the schoolsare so terrified of inappropriate behaviour and being sued - so I think from the school's point of view if you can't hug a child when they fall over and hurt themselves why should it be ok for a teacher to whip out a private part of her body for ANY reason?? Children can learn about their bodies from their parents or books - they see naked people in changing rooms at swimming pools or on the beaches abroad but those are different settings and some people are still shocked by women going topless on beaches. The school and the teachers have a different role to play in sex education - they should use diagrams and pictures and "approved" literature and programmes. They should not make it personal because as a teacher has already said - it changes the relationship in the classroom. I think that the teacher has now damaged her own reputation in the eyes of the parents. There will be more parents upset by this than not (at that school) and she may just decide to leave which is unfortunate if she is a good teacher but she did make the wrong call this time. Perhaps if she apologised to all the parents rather than just disappearing quietly.

Is there any word on what has happened to her now???

Kitti · 14/03/2008 12:08

oops - sorry many spelling mistakes and letters missed off!!

chirpycherrycake · 15/03/2008 21:39

Did anything happen as a result of this 'incident'?

2GIRLS · 15/03/2008 22:11

redadmiral-scandinavians are very open about nudity but I don't think this would go down too well in the ckassroom even there, it is just not appropriate.
And strange men and women are not naked together, only same sex.

redadmiral · 15/03/2008 23:35

Thanks for the response 2girls. I was genuinely interested.

I agree it is a bizarre thing to do in a classroom - just can't seem to get too worked up about it myself

Casserole · 16/03/2008 19:53

I just can't believe she got her whole tit out. Nip and everything?!?!?! Regardless of your stance on BFing any teacher in this country in this day and age would know she was asking for trouble by doing that.

Should she be sacked? I'm not sure. But disciplined, yes.

Dying to know what happens next....

Sassafrass · 16/03/2008 22:04

I'm swedish, and a teacher, and while I'm very pro breastfeeding I would never ever show my breasts in front of my class either here or in sweden.. I am certain that anyone who did would be chewed out by the head. It'd be another matter if a teacher on maternity leave was visiting and feeding her baby though. Noone really bats an eyelid at actual breastfeeding.

Kitti · 18/03/2008 16:30

any word on the teacher or was this just a wind up thread in the end??????

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 18/03/2008 16:32

I've been wondering that, Kitti.

Were we all just had after all

Come on, expose yourselves!

redadmiral · 18/03/2008 19:03

I think on balance it's a wind-up as it is such a particular example it would almost certainly out the poster. DD1 has a teacher whose behaviour can be pretty weird, but I'd never describe it in case someone I knew was on here...
