To ask how much you’ve won on premium bonds and how many you have?

Just that.

just popped children’s savings into premium bonds (around 8k). Was very excited about potential winnings . Looked it up and average would be about £350 a year 😂.

Has anyone had any luck? Thanks x

In the 1980s my DGM bought me £5 worth. Within six months I had won £50 to the entire family’s astonishment. Never won anything more though…

Glazzy · 20/11/2023 13:51

I had the max for 2 years and the 'winnings' equated to a dismal 0.8% interest per year.

Took it out and it's earning 6% now in a regular saver.

FutureDays · 20/11/2023 13:53

I had 2k in for 5 years and didn’t get anything, I’ve taken it out now

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 20/11/2023 13:54

£17K since May and I've won £1,350 to date.

GasPanic · 20/11/2023 13:56

The win rate has changed a lot because the interest rate has gone up.

I have won about the same this year (2023) as 2019-2022 combined.

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/11/2023 13:56

My partner and I have 100k between us. We win something every month and this year it's been around a 5% return in total - that's tax free, of course.

When interest rates on savings dropped to feck all for a couple of years, we were getting around 3% return.

We keep the bonds because it's been a decent return AND there's always the excitement each month of a possible big win. The most we've had in a single month was £1200. Last month we got £550.

Charlie2121 · 20/11/2023 13:57

Rates have increased quite significantly and they now offer somewhere around 4.5% average returns.

If you are a higher earner with zero allowance for tax free interest or a lower earner who has already used up their allowance then they are a decent option. If not you would probably be better in a standard ISA or other higher earning interest account.

My recent returns have been just under 4%. As an additional rate tax payer I'd need to earn around 8% in an account attracting tax on interest to compete with PB.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2023 14:00

I have the maximum and have had a win 11 months out of 12 in the past year. I've never won more that £2,000 but the investment has paid back more than an ISA.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 20/11/2023 14:03

We've had some in for the past year earned us 2.9% interest since December 2022.

TheNoodlesIncident · 20/11/2023 14:18

Both DH and I have the maximum £50K and we both win regularly, 9/10 months out of 12. DS has about £25K and wins now and again with those (his wins are reinvested so it grows without our adding to it), plus another lot of about £1,500 that his GP add to each birthday and Christmas. That doesn't win anything.

I've had about £2,750 since 2021, DH about the same. They've all been small winnings, like three £75, or a £100 and £25, a £50 and a £25, plus I got a £500 once. There's always the chance of something bigger though isn't there...

They were doing all right when every other savings account weren't doing anything. We're happy with them.

My friend wins every other week. Several cheques in one envelope..£50.£25.£200
Iv never won anything

1975wasthebest · 20/11/2023 14:29

I’m fairly new to it and haven’t won anything so far, but my holdings are small - 5K. I’d only get a small amount of interest in an ISA, which isn’t really worthwhile all things considered as I prefer the fun factor every month of PB’s, and the teeny tiny chance of wining big.

LAHallucinations · 20/11/2023 14:31

The number of medium and high value prizes has increased massively over the last year, so if you're lucky you might win a £500 or £1000 prize (or bigger). But most likely, with the current odds of 21,000 to 1, you'll win four or five prizes in the next year. Most of those being either £50 or £100, with the odd £25.

So far this year I've only won £1000 on holdings of £50,000, which is pretty rubbish. I don't mind though, I just see it as a bit of fun. I like at least being in with the chance of winning a huge prize each month.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 20/11/2023 14:31

I've got full holding and win something every month. Last month it was £150, biggest win was £900. Still holding out for the million!

WhatWindyWeather · 20/11/2023 14:33

About £20 invested about 45 years ago. Never ever won anything.

The draws are monthly so how can your friend win every other week? Surely it would be more convenient to have the money paid directly into the bank account rather than get cheques.

Twentypastfour · 20/11/2023 14:43

Tbf that’s because the payout rate was very low for years, same as savings accounts rates. You get good money on savings accounts and premium bonds now- I think the payout rate is now 4.65%.

I used to get the odd £25 in previous years but on average about £200 a month now.

NunsKnickers · 20/11/2023 14:45

In the past 12 months I've won £950. I have £34000 invested.

Not bad!!

I'm still convinced that one day I'll win the £1m. 😀

Yes it has always been monthly. I had mine automatically invested in more premium bonds until I reached the maximum.

This is more likely to be the football pools I think

CissOff · 20/11/2023 14:59

I’ve had £20k since September and won £200 (2 x £100) this month 🥳

Whatineed · 20/11/2023 15:00

I've won £100 every month this year. It automatically gets reinvested to give me 100 chances more the next month.

SingingSands · 20/11/2023 15:03

Never won a thing. My parents invested in some bonds when I was born, I don't know how many. We are all disappointed 😆

CustardySergeant · 20/11/2023 15:13

I have won £3400 since August 2019. I have the maximum holding of £50k.
