Just that.

just popped children’s savings into premium bonds (around 8k). Was very excited about potential winnings . Looked it up and average would be about £350 a year 😂.

Has anyone had any luck? Thanks x

£10k and I've won probably £75 this year. My partner has £50k and has won £700 in the past 6 months

Whatincreaseplse · 23/11/2023 07:26

Op if you have more than one dc be very carful. Once one posters child won a life changing amount and she didn't know what to do.
Split it or keep it.

I don't know how much you have put in but my dc isa... Junior. Stock and shares is up 20% now which equates to several thousand pounds.

I have pb and won 150 on 5 grand.

I only have them as a place to hold money I need to rather than savings.
My stock and share isa up 35 %.

So in short I wouldn't risk children's savings in it because the return isn't guaranteed perhaps hold it in the your name and then put winnings into stock and share isa for them.

Sallyingon · 23/11/2023 07:34

I've been doing it since February this year. I've had between 9k and 4k in. Keep topping it up and then having to take it out! My winnings for the year so far have been £250. I really enjoy the excitement of it

Goatymum · 23/11/2023 07:37

Dh and DCs have them. The highest amount anyone has had at once is £125.
DCs get excited as they’re students.
Think they have around £8-10K (all from MIL over the years).

Wimbledonmum1985 · 23/11/2023 07:37

Wi have around £14k in and have won approx £1,300 last time I calculated. Set up account about three years ago.

Whatincreaseplse · 23/11/2023 07:45

@Goatymum and yet even nation wide cash isa was 4% this year and would have given them several hundred in interest?

Oddsocks55 · 23/11/2023 07:48

My eldest did well. We put £500 in for each child about 15 months ago, DD1 is up £125 so far, DD2 hasn't won anything.

LeonardWoolf · 23/11/2023 07:49

Full holdings and averaging about 5% which I’m very happy with given it’s tax free.

I’m not sure it’s the best thing to do with smaller amounts as with eg £100 invested and average luck, you’ll maybe win £25 once every 5 years or so. Depends whether you see it as an investment or having a flutter.

My friend wins every other week. Several cheques in one envelope..£50.£25.£200
Iv never won anything

It's only once a month !

I've got max investment and win most months. Usually around 100-200

Getmeoutofheere · 24/11/2023 21:12

Thanks all. Yes I’m hopeful. We have about 9k now. We add about £120 a month to it. It is children’s savings and will be theirs but under my name (as have been the ISas it’s previously been in) and then I’ll give it out when they’re adults ( not sure if just give it to them when they’re 18 or buy first car or go towards when they move out or whatever. It’s been gathering a coipe of hundred in interest over the last few years so this is worth a try. And like others have said it’s the e sccitement of checking to see if you’ve won anything. Thanks again and good luck everyone x

This year I've won £875 with £3000, all reinvested but bought £25000 worth in October so am hoping for a win in December's draw as got nothing this month.

It's only monthly

She may get a cheq a week or so later but the actual winnings are one a month if she wins

mindutopia · 24/11/2023 21:46

Most I ever won I think was £125. But I had £50k in there (was part of house deposit that we needed to put somewhere safe and accessible) and used to almost always win every month, usually £50-75. Sadly, I never won anything massive for all my hopes of hitting the big one!

TheBirdintheCave · 24/11/2023 21:48

Dad used to have I think £30k in it and we reliably won about £100 a month which was spent on treats.

Ohmylovejune · 24/11/2023 21:51

Join us on th PB monthly thread.

My DH and I both have full holdings.

We've had a few "normal" wins this year and in June I won 25k. On the PB thread we've had another 50k snd 25k won recently and some 5ks too. Come and join us on the thread - won't be long and we will all be tidying our houses in case Agent Million calls for the December big ones!

YourWinter · 24/11/2023 21:51

I’ve had £14 (yes!) in PB’s since 1956. Won £250 in 1965 and £50 in 1974. Nothing else.

Have put another £200 in this month, inspired by the October Winners thread, I may even bump them up to £1000 before the end of November so I can win my overdue million in January 🤣

mewkins · 24/11/2023 22:25

My kids have each hD 1k for 3 years. They've won about 250 each in that time.

Lovedthosechips · 24/11/2023 22:31

won £10000 last week. Had about £11500 altogether so a 25% return.

I had £20-22k in for a few years and only won approx £200 on average per year. I've taken it out now and it's making me £100 a month in a high interest instant access savings account. Not as exciting as logging on to the PB app every month to see if I've won £25, but a much better investment!

NunsKnickers · 25/11/2023 12:26

I like Premium Bonds partly because the winnings are tax free, unlike interest earned.

With current interest rates if my £34k was in a high interest account I would have to pay tax on some of the interest. I think you can earn £1k in interest before having to declare it.

But I could be wrong. Does anyone know?

Do you mind me asking, the name of the savings account please

CustardySergeant · 20/11/2023 14:40

The draws are monthly so how can your friend win every other week? Surely it would be more convenient to have the money paid directly into the bank account rather than get cheques.

Edited

Was just about to say the same. I didn’t think they still did cheques , much easier to get it direct to your bank account,

TorroFerney · 25/11/2023 12:43

Getmeoutofheere · 20/11/2023 19:06

O is it still cheques? I’ve had about £500 for a year and not won a penny but assumed it’d all be done through the account x

You can choose whether to reinvest your winnings (assuming you’ve under £50k) or transfer to your bank account. Not per draw/month, for every draw I mean.
