To ask how much you’ve won on premium bonds and how many you have?

Just that.

just popped children’s savings into premium bonds (around 8k). Was very excited about potential winnings . Looked it up and average would be about £350 a year 😂.

Has anyone had any luck? Thanks x

I like Premium Bonds partly because the winnings are tax free, unlike interest earned.

With current interest rates if my £34k was in a high interest account I would have to pay tax on some of the interest. I think you can earn £1k in interest before having to declare it.

But I could be wrong. Does anyone know?

So it depends on your income, but for the average earner, yes - at £1,000 you’ll have to start paying tax. Not sure if you need to declare it as banks and building societies notify HMRC of people’s savings interest, so HMRC will send you a tax bill eventually.

Ah thank you.

I knew that there would be an expert out there!

We've had 12k in since April so I think we've been in 7 draws and only won once, £100.

Rainbow1901 · 25/11/2023 12:47

£2 since I was a kid - I'm retired now and still waiting for my number to come up!! 😅

Never won a thing. My parents invested in some bonds when I was born, I don't know how many. We are all disappointed 😆

You can trace them

NightIbble · 25/11/2023 12:55

Me and my sister have about 30k each and one of us will win something most months often just £25 but occasionally it has been in the thousands.

Concannon88 · 25/11/2023 12:58

You're laughing at £350 on 8k premium bonds?

LakieLady · 25/11/2023 13:00

I have either £15k or £20k's worth, and in the last 12 months have won the princely sum of £300.

I was on the point of moving the money into an ISA or something, and then I had a few small wins, then last month I won £150. I'm hoping my wins are building up to the big one!

I had a load a few years ago, and found that I had lots of small wins in the first year, then I didn't win for ages so cashed them in and put the money somewhere else. Then I bought this lot, and again had several small wins (I won at least £25 or £50 most months, sometimes more), then I didn't win anything for ages and now I seem to be having another crop of small wins.

I'm notoriously unlucky though. I never win raffles or anything.

SH23B · 25/11/2023 13:01

I've got 11k and have won 575 this year, so am happy with that. Wasn't happy with no win this month! My daughter got £25 though and that's her first win since 2020. My son has never won. They both have under 500.

KnottyKnitting · 25/11/2023 13:01

My DDs were bought £50 worth of premium bonds 23 years ago and neither have won a bean!

DH and I are both maxed out on Premium bond allowance and we win pretty much every month. Average is about £100 a month ( between us) but in the last year we have had bigger months £750 one month and £500 another. But in order to get these kinds of winnings you need to have a lot in them!

Lucky44 · 25/11/2023 13:15

About 10yrs ago I had sold my house and had a few months until I moved to new one so put the £20k deposit in premium bonds and 8months later won £50k.

Cotswoldbee · 25/11/2023 13:54

I was given £15 in PB's for my christening in 1965 and those bonds never won a penny (now gone as oldest ones disposed of first when cashing in).

Started building up a decent holding about 20yrs ago and a cheque would arrive fairly regularly.
We have both had FH for a few years now and we both win every month and are currently beating the average return (not massively but we are definitely ahead).
Best single month for me was earlier this year at £850 followed by £425 the next month.

I know M.Lewis doesn't like them but they are a bit of fun and as long as you are getting a definite return elsewhere, I don't see the harm. 😁

I've had 100 pounds I'm for a year and...won 100 pounds!

Increasinglyfrazzledteacher · 25/11/2023 14:02

I have a single £1 premium bond that was bought for me as a young child in the early 1960s. The last time I checked, it had earned me absolutely nothing at all.

kkneat · 25/11/2023 14:06

My DD’s each have 3k worth bought by grandparents they win about £50 a year each over last 15 years.

djembebonkers · 25/11/2023 14:07

Put the max in (50k) as advised by financial advisor. Win between £50 and £200 every month! One of the best uses and returns I've had with any kind of saving tbh!

User0000009 · 25/11/2023 14:11

I’ve got £50,000 invested and I average around £300 a month. I’ve been very lucky so far x

jay55 · 25/11/2023 14:11

I've 2k in, won £50 the first month.

YouOKHun · 25/11/2023 14:44

My DM has £50k and this last year (since November 2022) has won £25-150 every month until September this year and nothing in Sept, October and December. I have £25k and have won £25 or £50 every month except for May when I won £150. However, like my DM I’ve won nothing since August. Not sure what’s happened since August. Perhaps we need to sell and re-buy?!

wited · 25/11/2023 14:52

We had max holdings and moved them a couple of months ago. They were making way less than we are getting in a savings account

skyeisthelimit · 25/11/2023 15:27

I have £14K invested and have won £750 since January. 6 wins were £100 each. It has worked out far higher returns that interest, but obviously it's not guaranteed.

DD had £3500 invested and only won £25 in that time, so I have now invested that in a building society for her where it should earn over £100 in interest.

Getmeoutofheere · 25/11/2023 12:15

O brilliant I’ll track that thread down thanks you

Ratber than random answers you can see exactly how much everyone who wins the larger prizes holds every month. Obviously in a raffle it's interesting but meaningless but you will get the full statistics.

Dotjones · 25/11/2023 15:49

I've been putting in £25 a month for about 4 years. So far I've one once, also £25.

Some people on the PB threads have said similar to you about small bonds rarely or never winning. It does seem that most people who win anything have bonds that are at least £1K, and big wins from holdings of at least £20K.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 25/11/2023 16:48

£25 for 69 years and won zilch ☹️
Bought by my grandparents when I was born.
