Just that.

just popped children’s savings into premium bonds (around 8k). Was very excited about potential winnings . Looked it up and average would be about £350 a year 😂.

Has anyone had any luck? Thanks x

Some people on the PB threads have said similar to you about small bonds rarely or never winning. It does seem that most people who win anything have bonds that are at least £1K, and big wins from holdings of at least £20K.

There aren't small bonds, they are all the same.

There are people who don't hold very many so of course the people who have more tickets in the draw win more prizes

It's not a surprise that someone who has 25000 tickets wins more than someone who has 25 is it?

There aren't small bonds, they are all the same.

What I’m saying is that people have reported regular wins from bonds (not holdings) of more than £1K, not from any tiny bonds of £25 like you have.

This year has been much better - we have the max and between DH and I we have won £2,350 - hopefully more after Dec draw next week.

Last year was about £1k less than that.

We also put savings into the NS&I bond that was briefly available paying 6.2% and are getting a far better return there than on PBs.

O is it still cheques? I’ve had about £500 for a year and not won a penny but assumed it’d all be done through the account x

I've had £500 for 4 years and never won a penny. Don't expect to really. I hold some (£1350) for my aunt and she wins nearly every month between £25-100. None last month tbough

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/11/2023 17:31

I don't have many now due to ivf extension and off with with poor ankle

But I was doing really well at beginning of year winning £25 and odd £100 a month but the. Last 2mths nothing so hope to win dec !!!

I randomly decided to put in what was about the minimum in my twenties (£200 I think). The idea being I'd forget about it but there's always the tiny chance I'd get an envelope turn up one day with a big win. I did forget and it took 20 years but just recently got an envelope...£25! I'll contine to keep them just in case.

Laurama91 · 25/11/2023 18:16

Past 6 months £100. Think I've got about 10k. I'm sure I had some earlier in the year too

fortunatelynot · 25/11/2023 18:21

45k of bonds currently.

Won a couple of grand over the years but my amount held has gone up lots recently.

Had a good year so far with a grand won in the last 3 months.

5 years ago we re- mortgaged to extend and had £98000 in 4 different premium bond accounts. We won £500 plus a couple of £50 in a 6 month period.

I like Premium Bonds partly because the winnings are tax free, unlike interest earned.

With current interest rates if my £34k was in a high interest account I would have to pay tax on some of the interest. I think you can earn £1k in interest before having to declare it.

But I could be wrong. Does anyone know?

If you kept the cash in a cash isa then all of the interest earned would be tax free. Although I’ve noticed that non-isa accounts tend to pay better interest rates than isas.

How much interest allowance you receive depends on whether you’re a basic or higher rate taxpayer. Basic rate taxpayers can earn £1000 in interest before paying tax, £500 allowance for higher rate taxpayers and at some earning point I don’t think you get an allowance at all.

We have some in P Bonds but more in cash & stocks and shares isas. I enjoy the anticipation of winning but I also like some predictability in returns. I see PB as you’re effectively gambling the interest you could earn in a savings account to gain a chance of winning a prize.

I dont understand what you mean, there aren't bonds of anything other than one number (entry in the draw) per £ you buy

You can spend £1000 and you get 1000 individual bonds

£25 iant a tiny bind it's just the current minimum increment you can buy
