Cottage cheese

I tried cottage cheese for the first time today and I have no words, other than "BLAAAAHHHH"!

I was expecting something similar to ricotta, but it was like yogurt with crumbly chunks of ?, I don't even know what.

Have I just chosen a bad one (Sainsbury's)? Is it better heated up? What am I supposed to do with the rest of the pot?

YABU - Cottage cheese is delicious
YANBU - It is baby sick

Full fat Longley Farm, creamy and slightly salty, delicious!
I've found it in Morrisons, Home Bargains and Spar

I like cheese. I like yogurt. Unfortunately cottage cheese just looks too gross and tasteless. I'll have Boursin thanks

HangTheJib · 10/11/2023 16:10

The only place I can find Longley Farm is in Iceland.

Dahlietta · 10/11/2023 16:12

Beyond gross.
Full disclosure: have never actually managed to bring myself to put any in my mouth.

Cathod · 10/11/2023 16:12

Asda sell Longley farm. My toddler loves cottage cheese pancakes. Would be lovely with avocado or bacon!

Screamingabdabz · 10/11/2023 16:14

Although it’s technically cheese, you’re wrong to equate it with normal block cheese. It’s more like milk curds. If you want something creamy and sour it’s great. The only thing I ever use it for is on a jacket potato for with loads of pepper and sometimes chopped chives.

Star0Fire · 10/11/2023 16:16

You need longley farm! The full fat one 😋

Randomuser9876 · 10/11/2023 16:19

I am totally obsessed with Longley farm and as a Yorkshire person ate heaps growing up.

It's a totally different thing from the watery supermarket crap.

Am curious, can you get this easily outside Yorkshire though? Don't remember seeing it much when I lived in London. Just another reason to move home.

MrShady · 10/11/2023 16:21

Longley farm definitely

You can also blend it until it's smooth and use it in a sauce/dip/recipe

Morrisons, Asda and Home Bargains

RedRiverShore4 · 10/11/2023 16:23

Also agree with Longley Farm, Asda sell it, I can't seem to get it in Waitrose or Tesco, independent shops often sell it

sortitpink · 10/11/2023 16:26

Another vote for Longley Farm. No other brand even comes close

sortitpink · 10/11/2023 16:28

I like scooping it onto prawn cocktail crisps

MabelMaybe · 10/11/2023 16:28

Not all supermarkets have Longley's Farm; Home Bargains definitely have it. It's wonderful stuff. Gret high protein snack.

Iamnotminterested · 10/11/2023 16:29

Another vote for (full fat) Longley Farm here, heaven in a pot, any flavour.

themanicfantastic · 10/11/2023 16:31

Actually Lidl's one is lovely and creamy with no liquid. Aldi's isn't so good

Another vote for Lidl it's the only one I will eat as it's creamy and thick.. I do now want to try Longley farm !

Broop · 10/11/2023 16:39

Longley Farm is the stuff to get (but I don’t hate lesser brands): daubed onto thick soft white bread with sliced tomatoes and cucumber and a good grind of salt is my favourite breakfast!

AdaColeman · 10/11/2023 16:39

I'm a major fan of cottage cheese.

I especially like it for breakfast with finely chopped chives stirred in served with sliced tomatoes and salami. It's a real "wake up your taste buds" breakfast.

Another way I use it is to stir in some seafood sauce, capers and cooked prawns, (or you could use offcuts of smoked salmon) and serve with lettuce, rocket and avocado for a quick lunch. Or I sometimes add chopped ham and sun dried tomatoes plus some herbs....lovely piled on granary bread.

Buy Longley Farm cottage cheese.
It is the best. Not runny, lovely texture and taste. Yummm......

Absolutely. It's a class above anything else.

Another vote here for Lidl's full-fat cottage cheese 👌

I was introduced it to it by a Polish friend who said it was v similar to what she'd grown up with back home. She served it on crunchy toast (think bruschetta) topped with chopped tomatoes/cucumber, with a little spring onion and salt&pepper, and I add a drizzle of EVOO. Delicious!

And I've just made those 3-ingredient pancakes linked upthread (thank you!) and they were great - I chucked in an over-ripe banana too.

Poorlymumma · 10/11/2023 16:44

I've never been able to even try it due to the official description of thrush symptoms- 'cottage cheese like' discharge. No thanks.

fandjango · 10/11/2023 16:48

Blitz it up in a blender and use it as a dip for cucumber/tomatoes/pepper/crackers. Really nice with a bit of dijon mustard added.

I also like boiled eggs mixed with cottage cheese and again mustard.

Both good high protein snacks if you can get over the texture. Blending definitely helps

orchardsquare · 10/11/2023 16:51

Normal cottage is horrible and bland but Longley Farm, on a jacket potato, is delicious. (Especially the pineapple one). I have it with grated cheddar too. Butter, then a bit of grated cheese, then a whole pot of Longley Farm, then some more grated cheese on top with black pepper.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/11/2023 16:52

Meant to be like that, as in lumps in liquid? Hmmm...maybe not then

Yes, that's pretty much what cottage cheese is! The Longley one is a different texture, but probably still not different enough if you were that disgusted by the other one!
