Cottage cheese

I tried cottage cheese for the first time today and I have no words, other than "BLAAAAHHHH"!

I was expecting something similar to ricotta, but it was like yogurt with crumbly chunks of ?, I don't even know what.

Have I just chosen a bad one (Sainsbury's)? Is it better heated up? What am I supposed to do with the rest of the pot?

YABU - Cottage cheese is delicious
YANBU - It is baby sick

Cottage cheese is disgusting, although it actually goes well in guacamole and stops it going brown

BlueEyedPeanut · 10/11/2023 15:22

Only buy full fat. Season with a little salt and pepper. I love it. I usually just eat it straight from the tub.

YABU i love it, especially with tomatoes and cucumber added. Perfect as a snack or with a salad for a main meal

Hails1701 · 10/11/2023 15:24

Longley farm, eaten out of the tub with Pringles! Yum!

paradoxicalfrog · 10/11/2023 15:24

Tesco used to sell a 600g tub of natural cottage cheese which was very nice. Good flavour and texture and good value. Now they have stopped selling it, at least online for C&C.

It was good on its own or mixed with tuna and ground black pepper or chopped chives or chopped celery and peppers.

Buy Longley Farm cottage cheese.
It is the best. Not runny, lovely texture and taste. Yummm......

Totally agree with this. I love the plain and had some of the Longley Farm CC with chives on a jacket spud last night. M&S do a lovely cottage cheese as it has cream in it. Fat free cottage cheese is disgusting though.

I had this lunchtime, the pineapple one. I can eat a whole tub of it.

I've bought lots of supermarket ones and they are all watery. This one is so thick and creamy, it's the best I think. More expensive but worth it.

Longley Farm is good, but I don't buy the pineapple one any more due to added sugar. M&S pineapple one is even worse, and added creme fraiche as well, they must think it's a pudding. It's horrible.

If you can get it, Lidl cottage cheese is one of the few edible cheeses they sell (apart from branded ones).

I've never had theirs (although they do sell it in Sainsbury's I think). Sounds from your description like it's almost closer to curd cheese than cottage cheese; I'll have to try it.

I think the Riverford one I linked to is a curd cheese.

coxesorangepippin · 10/11/2023 15:30

It has to be higher fat

Lower fat cottage cheese is quite bad

With you on bounties. I’d add anything with marzipan.

I love cottage cheese. Especially the one with chives.

But I’m with you on Bounty bars and anything with marzipan.

HamzasHairnet · 10/11/2023 15:32

Another vote for Longley Farm! Sainsburys by me no longer sell it, but Heron and Pound land do.

happyharpy78 · 10/11/2023 15:33

Another vote for Longley Farm . I love it but wouldn't touch any other brand!

IHeartGeneHunt · 10/11/2023 15:33

Aldi is nice.
I only like it with sugar and strawberries/blueberries though, I can't do savoury cottage cheese.

Helenahandkart · 10/11/2023 15:35

I have it with homemade cinnamon granola and blackberries. It’s a taste sensation.

Agree. Cottage cheese is already low fat. Low and reduced fat cottage cheese is just lumps in tinted water.

Aethelberht · 10/11/2023 15:44

I agree it isn't fantastic but cottage cheese on jackets helped me survive my pregrnancy.

MonumentalLentil · 10/11/2023 15:44

Goes well with hot chilli too.

Onethingatatime23 · 10/11/2023 15:45

It's not for everyone, I can understand not everyone liking the texture. DH hates it but likes cheese generally. It's something I've always liked though even as a kid. Also always used to have Longley Farm yogurt.

brunchfiend · 10/11/2023 15:46

Cottage cheese is very nice as an ingredient in healthy bakes cheese cakes.

DryRobeWanker · 10/11/2023 15:59

It has to be Longley Farm.
I've tried so many others and they're all watery in comparison. I get why some people dislike it though, DC4 can't stand the lumps.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 10/11/2023 16:02

Another one saying Longley Farm.
It's absolutely delicious 😋

ginasevern · 10/11/2023 16:02

@ManateeFair

Ooh, I'll have to check out Sainsburys for it then. The whole food store is more difficult to get to - and more expensive.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/11/2023 16:03

I used to live very close to Longley Farm and knew the woman who stirred the cottage cheese.

It makes me gag!

mushroom3 · 10/11/2023 16:06

Piatnica (Polish cottage cheese sold by larger supermarkets or delis) or Longley farm, delicious. Supermarket own brand cottage cheese, on the whole yuk!
