Cottage cheese

I tried cottage cheese for the first time today and I have no words, other than "BLAAAAHHHH"!

I was expecting something similar to ricotta, but it was like yogurt with crumbly chunks of ?, I don't even know what.

Have I just chosen a bad one (Sainsbury's)? Is it better heated up? What am I supposed to do with the rest of the pot?

YABU - Cottage cheese is delicious
YANBU - It is baby sick

I like it! It definitely should not be heated up. If you found it disgusting, I'd be very surprised if trying a different brand would help. Some are nicer than others, but they are all cottage cheese. It's meant to be like that!

Meant to be like that, as in lumps in liquid? Hmmm...maybe not then

Another vote for Longley Farm. It's the best and deserves three of those foodie gold stars. U

It's nice with Tom purée stirred in, and dried herbs, or sriracha.

I also really like it in a baked potato with butter and lots of s and p.

Add your own chives , or prawns too.

GoatsareGOAT · 10/11/2023 14:50

Love it. Has to be full fat & Graham's is the best (not sure if they supply outwith Scotland?)

SirenSays · 10/11/2023 14:51

Baby sick in a pot 😩

idontlikealdi · 10/11/2023 14:52

I can't contemplate it snice my nurse friend told me they refer to really bad thrush discharge as cottage cheese.

Throwingpots · 10/11/2023 14:54

Bake a potatoe, scoop out the centre and mix this with cottage cheese, chopped spring onions and chopped up crispy back bacon with a knob of butter. Pile back into potato skins and reheat in oven. Delish! 😋

Another vote for Longley Farm full fat. I buy it from Asda, but I think Morrisons also sell it.

With you on bounties. I’d add anything with marzipan.

Agree with you on marzipan,. Also jelly, and anything where chocolate meets mint.

Gross stuff. Plus there's the lovely connotation that it's used to describe the consistency of discharge when you have thrush...🤢

And Sainsburys. Langley Farm everything is delicious not just the cottage cheese

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 10/11/2023 14:58

Yep, awful stuff, my friend used to call it thrush in a tub

gingercat02 · 10/11/2023 14:58

*Longley

I like whipped cottage cheese (you have to whip it yourself). Changes the taste and is lovely and smooth. You can then make it savoury or sweet with whatever additions you want. I like adding cooked salmon and dill.

ginasevern · 10/11/2023 15:01

Another vote for Longley Farm here. Their cottage cheese is actually more like cream cheese. Delish! I love their cream too, a gorgeous yellow colour. I buy their produce from a whole food store, not sure if supermarkets stock it.

NancyPickford · 10/11/2023 15:05

I love cheese, but I draw the line at cottage cheese, each to their own of course, but I found it almost sick-making.

Buy Longley Farm cottage cheese.
It is the best. Not runny, lovely texture and taste. Yummm......

This but make sure you get the full fat version.

Longley farms full fat is a completely different experience to any other cottage cheese but low fat cottage cheese is universally horrible.

CyberCritical · 10/11/2023 15:10

To answer a later post of yours OP. Longley farms isn't liquid with lumps, you could cut it with a knife.

MrsPinkL · 10/11/2023 15:11

It’s the work of the devil, just looking at the lumpy texture is enough for me. My youngest loves it with pineapple though, sometimes I wonder if his really my child tbh.

GwenH82 · 10/11/2023 15:12

I love the stuff, can eat spoonfuls out of the tub but, my husband thinks I'm a weirdo eating bland gloop. If you didn't like the sainsbury one I don't think any other brand will help though. You might find it a bit creamier or thicker but it's all that kind of texture.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/11/2023 15:13

I've never heard of anyone heating it up before Confused

But just in case you weren't sure OP, the only edible cottage cheese is Longley Farm, which is actually quite nice. Don't even think about trying anything else, as you have found out.

It's funny, growing up in Yorkshire, it was 'cottage cheese'. There was no other type as far as I know. But now I see that people from other places see it as a 'special, artisan, worth seeking out' product, but here, it's just the normal one. And all the supermarkets round here sell it.

You could say the same about Seabrooks crisps. They were the main brand for ages here, outselling and more widely available than Walkers, but I think they're everywhere now and I always think it's funny that they sit on the 'special local produce section' in Waitrose, even though you can also get them cheaply in Home Bargains.

Tighginn · 10/11/2023 15:13

Never, ever buy low fat.

ManateeFair · 10/11/2023 15:15

I love it.

I know loads of people do hate it though, so I wouldn't worry!

I get the impression that most people who don't like it have an issue with the texture, more than anything else. The texture of food never bothers me at all, but I expect that cottage cheese would be a challenge for people who find certain textures offputting.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 10/11/2023 15:15

Longley farm cottage cheese is a game changer. It is amazing, love it with beetroot.

Sainsbury’s stock it.

I've never had theirs (although they do sell it in Sainsbury's I think). Sounds from your description like it's almost closer to curd cheese than cottage cheese; I'll have to try it.
