Cottage cheese

I tried cottage cheese for the first time today and I have no words, other than "BLAAAAHHHH"!

I was expecting something similar to ricotta, but it was like yogurt with crumbly chunks of ?, I don't even know what.

Have I just chosen a bad one (Sainsbury's)? Is it better heated up? What am I supposed to do with the rest of the pot?

YABU - Cottage cheese is delicious
YANBU - It is baby sick

Another vote for Longley Farm but I like all own-brand cottage cheese too. I prefer plain to flavoured, and I like it with tasty crackers, or sprinkled with cinnamon and a handful of cashews or almonds. I don’t like it warmed so wouldn’t have it eg on jacket potatoes or toast.

sensationalsally · 10/11/2023 16:52

YABU. It is yum! fruit salad on the side... maybe a couple of pecans. Or in a baked potato. it does depend on the brand - keep trying till you find one you love.

Ilovefluffysheep · 10/11/2023 16:54

I'm obsessed with cottage cheese. I have it every day, and will happily eat it by the tub full!

As many others have said, Longley Farm is the best (full fat one). Lidl is also very good, and was my go to for many years (until the price has gone up and up so I now just buy Longley as they're closer in price now!).

Someone also mentioned the polish one sold in the world food fridge section in many of the larger supermarkets (Morrisons, Asda and Tesco near me all sell it). That's also very nice, but also has quite a different taste to the others.

The cheapest place round here to buy Longley Farm cottage cheese is Home Bargains - it's only £1.19, whereas in Morrisons (my closest supermarket) it's £1.50.

I've just come off a cruise and was delighted to find cottage cheese on there too (a lot of the cruise lines don't seem to have it any more). Had a huge bowl for breakfast every morning (along with other things!).

I love it, could eat it out the tub. The one with pineapple is delicious.

It's not everyone's thing though.

mondaytosunday · 10/11/2023 17:02

Oh love cottage cheese! You can get different flavours too. Hate ricotta as it happens...

4andnotcounting · 10/11/2023 17:04

The only cottage cheese I love and eat is the Langley farm one. All the supermarket own versions are 🤮

RedRiverShore4 · 10/11/2023 17:07

I looked at what Longley farm Asda sold as I was sure they only had the plain one, it looked like they had all the flavours and the yoghurt as well, I then logged in to my local store as I have had online shop in the past and only the plain came up and no yoghurts😕, it went from about 15 items to 2

JayAlfredPrufrock · 10/11/2023 17:19

Another vote for Longley Farm. With Chives is my favourite.

justjeansandanicetop · 10/11/2023 17:29

Haven't had cottage cheese for years, used to quite like it.

Can anyone remind me what it actually is though? And how fattening / calorific it is?

And what does it have to do with cottages?

And ideas of eating it, other than jacket potatoes?

madeinmanc · 10/11/2023 17:29

Longley should do a garlic and herbs one IMO.

Coastalcreeksider · 10/11/2023 17:30

I'm about to finish off the tub I started at lunchtime. I love the pineapple one but I do also like the plain one. Someone mentioned Lidl cottage cheese up the thread and that's probably the only other one I can eat other than Longley Farm.

I've tried several others and don't really like them, even Waitrose was a big disappointment as they only seem to sell their own one in the local Waitrose to me. Of all the stores, I would have thought they would have Longley Farm.

With you on bounties. I’d add anything with marzipan.

Marzipan and Bounty are food of the gods.
cottage cheese less so, but it’s ok.

pastapestoparmesan · 10/11/2023 18:02

Longley farm full fat, in a baked potato with a pound of butter and a sack of salt. One of my favourite dinners.

garlictwist · 10/11/2023 18:04

I eat it most days as it's a really good source of calcium and very high in protein so good for bones.

However I do have to force it down. The fat free versions are particularly grim.

warriorofhopelessness · 10/11/2023 18:09

I love cottage cheese, especially the pineapple one.

itsallnewnow · 10/11/2023 18:13

Full fat longley farm all the way, it's the only one worth bothering with

longtompot · 10/11/2023 18:39

I love cottage cheese. I eat the Sainsburys one which apparently is the worst according to this thread. I shall have to try and find the other ones.
I drain the liquid (whey) off the curds and have on toast or crackers with a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt flakes on top. Delicious.

towriteyoumustlive · 10/11/2023 18:47

I used to quite like it on a jacket potato, but then since watching a few Dr Pimple Popper episodes, I've kinda gone off it!

Mamato29192 · 10/11/2023 18:52

Yabu

PennyPinkPineapple · 10/11/2023 19:05

I'm intrigued by all the LF reviews so going to keep my eyes peeled for the full fat version.

That picture is horrendous.

Tbh I’d just cut ur losses and whack it into the bin. Life’s too short to force yourself to eat things you find disgusting. I don’t like cottage cheese of any kind !

ClearConfusion · 10/11/2023 19:22

Longley Farm or not at all

orchardsquare · 10/11/2023 19:29

That pimple popper picture looks more like thick porridge - it's too beige to be cottage cheese.

That's true! But there have been some definite cottage cheese ones too 😂

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/11/2023 19:43

I eat it on jacket potatoes for lunch sometimes - either a flavoured one or I add tuna and avocado .

I see it as a specific thing 'cottage cheese', rather than it actually being a kind of cheese -'it's not very cheese-like. And I wouldn't cook with it .
