Honestly.. I think I just saw a ghost...

Yep, really. And no, I'm not drunk BlushGrin

Driving home from work this evening, on the same roads I drive daily. There's a small church I always admire on my way through one of the villages.

Anyway, I pass it this evening, and notice a 'man' in what looked like a bright orange, almost yellow coat / jacket. I remember not seeing anything much, other than that and some legs. I thought it odd since he was stood on my side of the road, on the tiniest slither of verge. There really wasn't much there at all, and it is an extremely unsafe stretch of road in itself. No streetlights or anything like that, just windy country roads.

Anyway, I remember the shock as I saw him, I was thinking why on earth would somebody stand there in such a dangerous spot, let alone barely move out the way so I could pass!

Well. I passed slowly and carefully, before checking in my mirror to make sure he was still okay. When I did, there was absolutely nothing there. Nobody to be seen. The road is surrounded by open fields, no bushes or trees. There's literally nowhere he could have gone to, logically.

I know how stupid this sounds. Honestly if it hadn't just happened to me, I would be reading this post thinking the OP was delusional 🫣🤣

Has anybody had anything similar before?! I'm absolutely baffled!!!!

Presume your headlights lit him up, so how could you have seen him once you'd passed if theres no streetlights? am i missing something?
(i believe in ghosts btw)

thistimelastweek · 08/11/2023 20:34

Maybe just a man with power in his limbs?

EmmaEmerald · 08/11/2023 20:35

Was it yellow/orange hi vis? So you should still have seen it after?
Could he have fallen in a ditch?

FWIW I saw something really weird on Halloween years ago - a motorbike nearly hitting a guy who seemed to vanish. The rider got off and we were all looking around like "where'd that guy go?" On a busy London street.

I just said to the group who gathered "well, it is Halloween" and walked on. But some of them didn't get the significance, I think.

ideallyno · 08/11/2023 20:35

It was weird. I could see him ahead, before I reached him with my car headlights. But once passed (literally only JUST!!!) he was gone!

EmmaEmerald · 08/11/2023 20:36

Oh - could there be a man hole or storm drain cover he was working on?

ideallyno · 08/11/2023 20:36

It was a really bright jacket. That's all I can really remember seeing. And a pair of dark legs..
but I don't recall looking / seeing a face! I should certainly have been able to see him after passing, by the colour of the jacket alone!

Ok then

Honestly, I know. I'm fully aware of how ridiculous this sounds!

Like I said, if I hadn't have written this myself, I'd be fully prepared to think the writer crazy.

Was it a traffic cone? 🤭

SurelySmartie · 08/11/2023 20:39

I just don’t believe a ghost would wear bright orange.

Jellykat · 08/11/2023 20:39

Hi Vis jacket.. he'll be from BT Open reach, they're highly elusive you know!

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/11/2023 20:39

The sides of your eyeballs see better in the dark than the back. Seeing something out of the corner of your eye, then looking directly at it in low light will cause it to 'disappear'. Plus he was no longer lit by your headlights.

Or it's a ghost Wink

Grin I'm still trying to reason with myself as to where he may have gone!

Drive by again in daylight and you'll see somewhere he could have gone.

if not, he's a ghost in high vis. I just hope there's not a tale of some poor soul who worked along that stretch of road and got killed or whatever.

ideallyno · 08/11/2023 20:41

Maybe I'll Google that stretch of road. See if anybody else has ever had some similar experience.

I am fully aware of how ridiculous and crazy I sound. Like I say, if I hadn't have written this myself, I would have had a little eye-roll moment reading it 🫣😅

I'd do that.

if you have a story as good as the MN Goatman, I'll be chuffed!

though animal lore is always better.

Jellykat · 08/11/2023 20:44

Have a google, see if theres been any hideous accidents on that bit of road, especially if it features a hi vis jacket.. then come tell us?

Alifestylechoice · 08/11/2023 20:44

Don’t tell me you’re in Derbyshire. I’ve heard of the Hi Vis spectre there. He’s deadly. Lucky you didn’t stop to check his work permit

MaliciaKeys · 08/11/2023 20:44

I doubt it was a ghost. Are you sure you didn't knock him down and run him over?

ideallyno · 08/11/2023 20:45

Nope, I'm in the East!

Absolutely positive I didn't. I mannered so carefully as I was aware as to how close to the road he was.
