Honestly.. I think I just saw a ghost...

Yep, really. And no, I'm not drunk BlushGrin

Driving home from work this evening, on the same roads I drive daily. There's a small church I always admire on my way through one of the villages.

Anyway, I pass it this evening, and notice a 'man' in what looked like a bright orange, almost yellow coat / jacket. I remember not seeing anything much, other than that and some legs. I thought it odd since he was stood on my side of the road, on the tiniest slither of verge. There really wasn't much there at all, and it is an extremely unsafe stretch of road in itself. No streetlights or anything like that, just windy country roads.

Anyway, I remember the shock as I saw him, I was thinking why on earth would somebody stand there in such a dangerous spot, let alone barely move out the way so I could pass!

Well. I passed slowly and carefully, before checking in my mirror to make sure he was still okay. When I did, there was absolutely nothing there. Nobody to be seen. The road is surrounded by open fields, no bushes or trees. There's literally nowhere he could have gone to, logically.

I know how stupid this sounds. Honestly if it hadn't just happened to me, I would be reading this post thinking the OP was delusional 🫣🤣

Has anybody had anything similar before?! I'm absolutely baffled!!!!

Oh - could there be a man hole or storm drain cover he was working on?

That was my first thought, it would explain the bright jacket and the disappearing act.

sammyjoanne · 08/11/2023 23:30

@ideallyno yes something happened similar. I was driving coming back from a caring job and going down a country lane which runs along side the canal. A man in a flat cap was on his bike, going in the same direction as me. But he was facing oncoming traffic on the right hand side, and im like oh if someone comes round the corner in the car right now he's going to get killed. Well, a car did come round the corner and the headlights were on and as they shone in his direction the man on the bike disappeared right in front of my eyes.

I had to find out if I saw was real or not so did a bit of digging. Around that time of the year in the late 1800's a man was coming back from the pub, drunk on a bike and he fell into the canal and drowned. And it was on that stretch of road as well. It could well have been a ghost, or a replay of time like a movie clip being spat out in a way I think.

I had a very similar experience to you OP. I was driving home when I saw two people walking along the road - in the road when, for safety’s sake they should have been closer to the verge. They looked like students from the 1970s. One was wearing big bell bottom jeans and had a long knitted Dr Who scarf. I looked through my side window and they weren’t solid. I could see them clearly but they weren’t solid. When I looked in my rear view window they were gone. I still can’t explain it.

ideallyno · 08/11/2023 20:35

It was weird. I could see him ahead, before I reached him with my car headlights. But once passed (literally only JUST!!!) he was gone!

That’s your blind spot! You can’t see anything in that bit. And as it was dark you then wouldn’t have seen him in your mirrors either. No mystery, no ghosts.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/11/2023 23:51

I was out with a boyfriend once when a man ran in front our car, close enough for boyfriend to slam brakes. Man disappeared before our very eyes. Didn't even get past the car, just disappeared into thin air. I've had a ton of experiences from childhood, have posted most on here. It happens. Time slip, maybe.

active camo cloak(think invisibility type cloak harry potter), hologram projection, someone just got transported, etc

I just don’t believe a ghost would wear bright orange.

Do ghosts change their clothes ?

Artichokepiglet · 09/11/2023 06:10

It's always a grey lady isn't it? So I think a ghost in orange is quite refreshing!

More seriously though, this didn't happen near a certain village that's known for its paranormal activity did it?

marmiteandminticecream · 09/11/2023 06:15

maybe he's been haunting that stretch of the road for years and no one as noticed him so he put on the hi vis

Lateliein · 09/11/2023 06:32

Is this in NE Scotland?

Never heard of grey lady till I joined MN and I love ghost stories.

but this is too recent and the poor lad was on my mind as soon as I woke up.

Hi Vis jacket.. he'll be from BT Open reach, they're highly elusive you know!

Round here they definitely are 😂

Ghosts are only ever dressed in clothes from Victorian times! 😂

Why not?! If you accept the existence of ghosts and that they are apparitions/echoes of people who’ve died, wouldn’t it be quite likely for a bloke in hi-viz to have been killed on a dangerous stretch of road?

Given the billions of dead people across time, it’s more probable that you’d see someone in old-timey gear, but if you believe in this stuff at all why would you assume that there are no appearances of people who’ve died in mundane circumstances within living memory?

If there’s such a thing as ghosts there’s bound to be a few going around in Nike trainers or hard hats or leggings, surely? Or maybe they’re the ones who never get noticed for that reason 🤷‍♀️

Seaglass7 · 09/11/2023 08:14

I’ve never seen a ghost and will always look for a rational explanation before believing what people have seen.

Most of these encounters happen at night when our vision isn’t as good.

I’m on the fence but open to the possibility that there are things we can’t explain.

DH is convinced that he saw a dog sitting in the middle of the road while driving through a local village one night. He slammed on his brakes thinking it was going to hit it. There was nothing there. He’s not into ghost stories or anything ‘woo’ but he’s still convinced that there was a dog there.

OP, drive back that way tonight and update us.

CurlewKate · 09/11/2023 08:54

One of the reasons I don't believe in ghosts it that they never wear hi viz....

I was once walking down a walled road, little old bloke with a dog walking towards me. He nodded and smiled.

For some reason, I turned around straight after, and he simply wasn't there. He'd bloody vanished. There were high walls on either side!!!!?

I was one looking out the window and an old guy was walking along on the other side of the road - next to him was a tall wall topped with a bushy hedge then a hill. He walked past a car and then disappeared. I stood for ages completely shocked - he wasn't further down the road, not in the car, he couldn't have gone up the wall and onto the hill, he couldn't have crossed the road.. I still think about that now.

I've mentioned this incident before, possibly under a previous username.
One night I was travelling home from work in a fairly empty train. An old-fashioned one with separate carriages that had doors between them that slammed. I was in the carriage nearest the driver, close to the 'through doors'.
As we approached the penultimate stop I was aware of just one passenger in my carriage, a man in dark clothing. We approached the stop and he got up to stand by the doors (central to the carriage). Got to the stop but he didn't get off. I was aware he was by the doors.
I'd been browse-reading a book and started packing up my things as we approached the station/terminus.
Train pulled up and I got off. And then realised that there had been nobody by the doors.
The only other people on thr platform were at the other end of the train. My carriage was empty.
Never found an explanation for that.
