Driving home from work this evening, on the same roads I drive daily. There's a small church I always admire on my way through one of the villages.

Anyway, I pass it this evening, and notice a 'man' in what looked like a bright orange, almost yellow coat / jacket. I remember not seeing anything much, other than that and some legs. I thought it odd since he was stood on my side of the road, on the tiniest slither of verge. There really wasn't much there at all, and it is an extremely unsafe stretch of road in itself. No streetlights or anything like that, just windy country roads.

Anyway, I remember the shock as I saw him, I was thinking why on earth would somebody stand there in such a dangerous spot, let alone barely move out the way so I could pass!

Well. I passed slowly and carefully, before checking in my mirror to make sure he was still okay. When I did, there was absolutely nothing there. Nobody to be seen. The road is surrounded by open fields, no bushes or trees. There's literally nowhere he could have gone to, logically.

I know how stupid this sounds. Honestly if it hadn't just happened to me, I would be reading this post thinking the OP was delusional 🫣🤣

I just can't think of anywhere he could have gone. It was strange. There's nothing but open fields either side of the road, even if he crouched down or ran off I'd have seen him..

I was once walking down a walled road, little old bloke with a dog walking towards me. He nodded and smiled.

For some reason, I turned around straight after, and he simply wasn't there. He'd bloody vanished. There were high walls on either side!!!!?

Our brains try to make sense of what we see. I've often thought that someone was standing in bus stops etc, but realised that it's the way eyes are reacting to shadows and glints of light, especially if it's been raining.

Could someone have wrapped a post at the side of the road with high vis? So nobody drives into it? It would make sense that you couldn't see it behind you then as the lights would be pointing the wrong way.

Do you have a dash cam? Might help illuminate the conundrum.

@MaraScottie Clever! I recall aged six walking in the gloaming at a local park hand-in-hand with my father. It was that time of evening when visibility declines but there is still some light left.

I pointed out to my Dad that a large, old gentleman had been bending over in the same position for a long time. Should we help him? Had he found some fascinating treasure? Or was he just stuck? We giggled and gradually walked towards him. It took us getting within 10 feet to gradually realise his bum was a big oval sign and his legs were the sign posts. We laughed all the way home and my father booked me in for my first much-needed sight test.

I've driven the same road at least twice daily for the past 3.5 years now since living here and haven't ever seen anything even remotely similar to what I saw this evening.

I don't believe there is a post or similar in that area, but I will check in the morning to be sure.

When I read your OP I immediately thought of this Hammer Horror episode which was obligatory watching for any 1970s youngster who wanted to terrify themselves. Don’t have nightmares ;)

I had a weird drive in March/April time last year. About 2am, driving through some woods between Wokingham and Crowthorne. There are no street lamps and no footpaths with huge trees on either side. I see a shape like a person in my headlights just as I’m about to drive past and then a really, really loud scream that kind of sounds like metal scraping. I do stop even though I’m terrified and there’s nothing there. I carry on and hear the same sound again from behind me.

I would prefer it was a ghost but I can't ignore the rational explanation.
