What do you think the end of Western civilisation will look like?

Am hopeful it won't be for a good while yet Grin

But with the whole world being so uncertain at the moment, with climate change and resource wars and mass migration on the horizon, I guess who knows what the coming decades could be like?

Hopefully though human ingenuity can find ways of muddling along as long as possible. If we can't, and if in 100 years high wet bulb temperatures and flooding and antimicrobial resistance has pretty much whittled down half or more of the world's population - do you think then the remaining people would set aside geopolitical differences? To get their smartest people working together to solve environmental problems? And with the rich everywhere pitching in resources?

Or do you think rich countries will just continue to try to hog resources until the bitter end of humanity?

Mad Max, or Mad Max 2, or Max Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Edited

Are we hoping for the Tina Turner or Charlize Theron scenario?

Have you ever visited Newport, Gwent?
Like that.

Parties in number 10 during the Johnson/Cummings covid era.

Slough.

I think the gap between rich and poor today is nothing in comparison to the future: there will be wars over water, clean air, food and I think there will be two classes of people: those with money/power who do ok and everyone else for whom life is about survival at best.

I actually feel guilty that I chose to bring my child into such a scary world that they will have to navigate when I'm gone.

I think the rich will do all they can to hog resources. Maybe even building gated/guarded communities. I'm sure they'll let a few oinks in to do their dirty work. But the masses who will have emigrated north to cooler climates, will be jumping from the frying pan, into the fryer. As they'll be no resources left anyway.
I don't think they'll be worldwide collaboration that will make things better. Maybe on the surface to keep the masses calm, while they built their super villages. Then maybe after a century or two, the environment will have recovered a bit and they might be able to spead their communities a bit further. And the cycle of destruction will begin again.
I've depressed myself now 😅

Classic Mumsnet anti natalist crap. Now is by far best time to have ever lived in human history and it will be better again in 100 years time.

RaininSummer · 07/11/2023 18:21

I agree with Hermione that we are likely to get culture/religion wars long before the environment kills us.

They’ve done it up now. Maybe more like Neath.

@cardibach The main high street still looks apocalyptic.

Wrong thread, surely. Sort out your programme.

The next geo political crises are what's happening in the Sahel region and water wars

Sorry 😞

cardibach · 07/11/2023 18:25

Fair point @funbags3
Generally though - on the up.

Completely agree, and I wasn’t born in the UK.

What's your AIBU?

Noicant · 07/11/2023 18:32

I think it will be a steady boring decline with fewer people interested in difficult answers to difficult questions.

We struggle with complexity as it is and I’m not sure that as a world we are getting better at nuance. Hopefully there will always be some clever people somewhere working on ways to make life better but I think on a societal level we have become really quite stupid in some way. Memes, chants and slogans instead of proper discussion. Emotion before rational and reasoned thought. Politicians seem terrified of telling the public the truth about anything because the public can’t bear to have an honest conversation.

bombastix · 07/11/2023 18:33

Violent. And a decline into fascist thought by politicians who will decide that's better than no power at all.

Estermay · 07/11/2023 18:37

Have you read what happened after the lack death when a third of England's population died in 9 months? Some things were much worse, but some things got much better because the poorest could get higher wages so poverty was not as deep.
It won't be mad max style. But the middle class will pretty much disappear.

CesareBorgia · 07/11/2023 18:37

Look out of your window and you can see for yourself!

Agree. I marvel that so many are in denial about this. They just throw out lazy accusations of “racism” “Islamophobia” “hate” “bigotry”. I have reached the point that I believe those knee jerk responses to be fear based because they know deep down that there’s no alternative but to be as nice and accepting as possible and hope that setting a good example will protect them. It won’t.

It’s good to hear this from someone actually from the ME with experience of both ways of life. We know peaceful, moderate Muslims are the majority, but the extremists are making things very difficult for everyone and there’s enough of them to influence and bring about unwanted societal changes. it isn’t bigoted or hateful to recognise that.

Haha my DH is from there.

I think it will be like Ben Eltons book Blind Faith. It's getting closer to that every day.
