What do you think the end of Western civilisation will look like?

Am hopeful it won't be for a good while yet Grin

But with the whole world being so uncertain at the moment, with climate change and resource wars and mass migration on the horizon, I guess who knows what the coming decades could be like?

Hopefully though human ingenuity can find ways of muddling along as long as possible. If we can't, and if in 100 years high wet bulb temperatures and flooding and antimicrobial resistance has pretty much whittled down half or more of the world's population - do you think then the remaining people would set aside geopolitical differences? To get their smartest people working together to solve environmental problems? And with the rich everywhere pitching in resources?

Or do you think rich countries will just continue to try to hog resources until the bitter end of humanity?

Lots and lots of melted lip fillers and breast implants fossiling into the grounds?

Im picturing in 3,000 years people finding lip shapes in rocks

PramPusherCentral · 07/11/2023 20:29

Rampant unchecked nudity, sex, and general hedonism, apparently.

Literacy high, but ignorance also high.

The relaxing of many laws for things we used to find abhorrent.

Reliance on AI and many people preoccupied with virtual worlds.

More people than ever on drugs to get high, but legally sanctioned normalised drugs.

Women in more powerful influential leadership roles.

Wet. Riding sea levels are forecast to cove much of the UK and other countries by 2050.

Really? Rising sea levels will cover much of the UK within 27 years?

@HermioneWeasley exactly what you said. For our family seen the marches this last month was the last straw. We are leaving not just the U.K. but Europe in the next couple of years. The amount of criminals and extremists that arrived in the last decade and with a supposedly right wing government. Really scary times so for me part of the West as we knew it is already gone. Also, people are so scare are to say anything. Mental!

Interested to know where you’re going.

“I do think the younger generation have a different outlook to current governments though so maybe they will want to do things different and collaborate?” I like your optimism, I hope for my DD sake you are right.

RosaGallica · 07/11/2023 20:41

I find it concerning that @HermioneWeasley's post, which many agreed with, was deleted. Almost as concerning as the protests she was talking about.

Dymaxion · 07/11/2023 20:42

The culture thing is interesting, have those mentioning it considered the roots, and the role of the global western order. Resource hogging, relentless exploitation and right now a refusal to deal with the climate and ecological emergency.

Other than water, what other natural resources does the Uk have in great abundance ?

'Freedom of speech'

Bluebellcup · 07/11/2023 20:43

This.

We already live in a Godless society driven by ego, greed and paranoia.

Classic Mumsnet anti natalist crap. Now is by far best time to have ever lived in human history and it will be better again in 100 years time.

I have no idea what "anti natalist crap" means and strange as it may seem, about 99.9% of my reading and forming of opinions doesn't have anything to do with Mumsnet.😂

RosaGallica · 07/11/2023 20:47

I wouldn't under-estimate the value of water and ability to grow crops.

biscuitnut · 07/11/2023 20:47

I think multiculturalism is failing to a certain extent in the west and before anyone gets their over-righteous knickers in a twist I am not being racist. I don’t think any race/culture or religion is ‘superior’ to another. The marches in London are a case in point. British Jews are now scared to show their identity, if that isn’t a failure of multiculturalism then what is? Some people demand tolerance whilst being extremely intolerant of others. Social media fans the flames and turns people to extremism who cannot see any point of view but their own.
The west needs to find common ground, we cannot have a polarised nation fighting itself. If we can’t join together and find some common ground and unite then that’s how we will implode.

travelnorth · 07/11/2023 20:48

@RosaGallica This is why we are scare of the future in this type of environment. Those are literally facts and legitimate concerns. There is not way my kids will grow up with this hate and abuse.

Namesbeenchanged · 07/11/2023 20:50

People move from certain areas as others move in. Happened in London and areas in most major cities. Will increase and if all tolerant of each then all great and dandy. If not then majority rule. Some people like to change things and not always for the best.

Or, food shortages due to climate change. More protests about protecting thd planet.

Rich people will always do well and will continue to take more than their fair share.

'Freedom of speech'

I find MN and the constant claims of racism/phobia exhausting.

Lack of freedoms is expected under Sharia law but the curtailment of freedom of speech in the UK is on a par.

Newnametoavoidtrouble · 07/11/2023 20:53

Perhaps we should look at India for some clues. Serious overcrowding, Bitter rivalries between two religions. Pollution, wide contrasts between rich and poor.

Yes, any concern someone has automatically makes them -ist or -phobic. It prevents discussion.

The end of the west as super power? Who knows?

The end of humanity? As a biologist by education I'd say the reality might be surprising, like some species only produce female in certain temperatures, something small and unthought of will start a few chain reactions in our ecological system that makes us die off as the appex predator. Everything is in such beautiful balance and nature does amazingly to adapt. But a card coming out near the bottom and BOOM we are toast I bet. Like Asian hornets killing off all the bees or the like. That's my theory. But as the earth is in a perfect balance and we die out, its part of the balance so I don't muse over it.

Ask AI this question. "How do we stop and reverse climate change?" There is one perfect answer to that isn't there? So maybe AI

One day the earth will die and everything we ever did as a species will be gone. So kind of puts it into prospective. Our destiny is to die out. Kind of peaceful I think. Its all very pointless really.

I must admit, the thought of humans becoming extinct gives me a feeling of peace. Especially in current times seeing how everything is accelerating.

TheCadoganArms · 07/11/2023 20:58

Like the film Elysium

BiggletonUnited · 07/11/2023 21:00

Like writing a disaster film !

There'll be a period about 20 years from now where we think AI has helped solve our health problems, then we realise it has put a genetic bug in human civilisation and we all fall victim to some mass extinction event and the world continues happily without humans.

Ice caps melt and most of humanity goes underwater. Few islands on which the richest and smartest live. There will only be sea water and fresh water will be scarce. Water wars.

Political unrest combined with drones and advanced weapons means a WW3 scenario wipes everyone out.

Countries are replaced by companies as the brokers of power and we end up being born into e.g. Amazon race or Meta race. Tech gets aggressive and the biggest baddest wins, wiping everyone but the top engineers out.

NCGrandParent · 07/11/2023 21:00

Define "western civilization". By most measures, the west is no longer supreme.

Capitalism has peaked in the west.
Democratic institutions are being/ have eroded.
Birth rates crashing.

The group that commits most anti-semitic attacks in the UK are the far right, who are white.

The Home Office figures show that “In year ending March 2021, where the perceived religion of the victim was recorded, just under half (45 percent) of religious hate crime offences were targeted against Muslims (2,703 offences),”

The second most targeted group was Jewish people with 22 percent.

And who is overwhelmingly committing these attacks against Muslims and Jews? White people.

So if multiculturalism’s is failing, place blame at the right door.

Which court practices sharia law, do enlighten us.

Perhaps we should look at India for some clues. Serious overcrowding, Bitter rivalries between two religions. Pollution, wide contrasts between rich and poor.

India has a very young population though.

The human race as a whole will need the brightest and best young people from everywhere to work out stuff like how to feed as many people as possible in hostile growing environments.

And to develop new antibiotics. And then there needs to be a global cast iron agreement that new antibiotics do not enter the agricultural foodchain.

Without antibiotics we are going back to the darkest of the dark ages. Honestly, I've not had an antibiotic myself in years and years, but it's probably the threat I find the most disturbing. I can't imagine the world where you die of the infections we treat routinely and most people recover from at the moment.
