To call the smallest bedroom the box room ??

Because SIL has had a huge rant at me that I’m wrong to do so ??!!

I have a 4 bed house , The smallest room has a king size bed, wardrobe and 2 slim chest of drawers. We had been having a conversation and she said how they struggle for space I said ‘same for us especially with having the box room as our bedroom!’ Her face just froze and she told me I’m ‘entitled’ that they have a 3 bed where their smallest only fits a single bed and bedside cabinet in and how I’m privileged and she thought I’d be more aware and sensitive to others situations and not making out Im struggling for space too!!

I call it the box room but am I meant to say the smallest bedroom? I thought box room just meant smallest really ? She’s told dh in a text that she just can’t deal with us at the moment when they are struggling and we are competing ???

A box room doesn't fit a king sized bed!

Box room is generally the smallest room that only just about fits a single bed and few bits in. I wouldn’t describe a room big enough for a king size bed as a box room.

I think because growing up my dm called the smallest room the box room (that fot a single bed wardrobe and 1 chest of drawers) it’s just become box room = smallest room in my mind!

A box room would definitely not fit a king size bed in it. Your sisters right that it’s not a box room. A box room is tiny so just fits a single bed and a bedside cabinet. I had one growing up and was always really jealous of my DB’s much bigger room! Not sure that it makes you entitled though if you genuinely didn’t know.

A box room doesn’t have space for a king size bed. Let alone multiple other pieces of furniture.

If that is the smallest room in your house then you probably are not struggling for space in the same way that she is thinking. Unless of course you have 9 children or something.

She was fuming , I said to her it’s all relative though as they have a 3 bed and 2 dc, we have a 4 bed and 5 dc but she was less than impressed. I honestly just thought box room was used to describe the smallest bedroom

I thought the box room was traditionally the room at the back of an extended two-up-two-down Victorian terrace house. Like a box stuck on the back.

Your SIL is right, a box room is a very small room, not just the smallest of your rooms.

I had the box room growing up. I had a single bed and a tiny chest of drawers.

It was probably only 6ft x 7ft. I had to put my clothes in my sister's wardrobe in her room.

Your SIL is probably right that you are spoilt if you call a normal sized bedroom a box room, but she's not right to rant at you.

Well I guess it is the smallest room, but it is generally the smallest room by far. The clue is kind of in the name.
