Because SIL has had a huge rant at me that I’m wrong to do so ??!!

I have a 4 bed house , The smallest room has a king size bed, wardrobe and 2 slim chest of drawers. We had been having a conversation and she said how they struggle for space I said ‘same for us especially with having the box room as our bedroom!’ Her face just froze and she told me I’m ‘entitled’ that they have a 3 bed where their smallest only fits a single bed and bedside cabinet in and how I’m privileged and she thought I’d be more aware and sensitive to others situations and not making out Im struggling for space too!!

I call it the box room but am I meant to say the smallest bedroom? I thought box room just meant smallest really ? She’s told dh in a text that she just can’t deal with us at the moment when they are struggling and we are competing ???

It does come off as a bit entitled. My 3rd bedroom is a proper box room (I've been in bigger elevators) and it's 5ft 8 x 6ft. You can get a single bed in there with a bedside table.

There are seven of you in a house with four good sized rooms, given that the smallest fits a king sized bed and other furniture. You really need to get over yourself.

She sounds unhinged, she could just have laughed and realised you mistakenly though box room meant smallest room.

But depending on how many kids you have it does sound daft that you said you are struggling, especially if they really are tight for space

What's an LA house? You mean council housing? (as in "local authorities")

mondaytosunday · 25/10/2023 23:48

I have a fourth bedroom that truly is a box room (though actually is an office). It's less than 6ft wide and about 7ft long, but is technically a bedroom . Your bedroom sounds a decent size and about the size of our guest bedroom - the second biggest in the house! Definitely NOT a box room.

Call it the '4th bedroom' then you're not alluding to the size of it.

To me the box room is often the room above the stairs that only fits a single bed and minor storage. It's a minor thing really but I imagine it just tipped her over the edge.

> But it is our smallest room

Just because it's your smallest, doesn't mean it is small.

An example: Let's say that in my wardrobe I have a £25000 birkin handbag. And I have a few for £10 000. Some Chanel ones for £5000.

Let's say I got a £1000 bag from Harrods.

That's my cheapest bag.

But is it a cheap bag?

No.

A cheap bag is one you got for £10 in Primark. Or £5 in a charity shop.

Just say whose room it is. Bob's room, Jo's room, Our room.

That is really big for a 4th bedroom! Obviously you’ve already been told it’s not a box room, but it’s really not even small for a 4th bedroom if you can get a king size bed and 3 pieces of furniture in too. It’s hard to picture a house with that size for the smallest bedroom giving you space issues overall.

Interesting that she feels you compete, and you jumped straight in with your own (unintentional I think) “top trumps”.

It reminded me of this cartoon I saw the other day with reminds me of my ASD sister.

Fab973 · 25/10/2023 23:54

Well this is a “humble brag” if ever there was one . . .

If you want to be completely correct, a box room is a room in an old house that was never intended to be used as a bedroom. It was a storage room, literally for boxes, when people had trunks, hat boxes etc. In practice, though, they were often where a maid might sleep. Since that time, it's been used as the name for a very small bedroom. But if your smallest bedroom isn't small, it's not what most people would call a box room.

Yes I meant local authority house by LA

My ds would be made up if he could have a king-size bed or even a double bed in his box room never mind wardrobe and drawers, single bed and Wardrobe is about all that fits in his box room.
