Enjoyed watching the documentary, he was different than I expected him to be, not sure how really, but I have more respect for Victoria now as I think their lives have been about what he wanted/needed mainly
There are rumours of lots of affairs, is this true though as I find that hard to believe, he seemed so obsessed with her

School champion - okay. I’m talking about being exposed to a lot more than school sports. Being connected to clubs that can push and further your progression.

My DH played tennis at his school. He played and practised at his local club for two hours every morning before school and for two hours after school and for two full days at weekends. . He was pushed into tournaments from a young age. He eventually started winning and represented his county first and then nationally. He beat better players because he worked and worked at it.

(His parents travelled and he went to secondary school in another country where tennis wasn’t a big sport His parents could have pushed and relocated to ensure he continued playing but didn’t. Something they regret. DH was happy growing up and doesn’t have huge regrets about quitting.)

The comment about your DH beating better players doesn’t make any sense. He was better because he DID beat them.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 17/10/2023 19:45

He was better because he DID beat them.

He beat them because he worked so hard at it. He put in longer practice sessions. He knew some of them were better players but he continued practising the same shots over and over because he knew he had to. They were ‘talented’ players but it wasn’t enough. Hard work won.

Tambatamba · 17/10/2023 20:36

and they’re born, not created.

The William’s father agrees. He decided they were going to play tennis before they could walk! Again very hard and continuous work paid off.

Yes but for every Serena Williams, there are countless children and then adults who were forced into tennis or whatever else by their parent and the parent guilts them into moving abroad etc. and they don't turn out to ever be world class players. But one thing's for sure - they never knew what they really wanted to do and that's sad.

Tambatamba · 17/10/2023 20:38

The reason I say this is that I know someone in my town who was a victim of this type of parenting. She was forced to move to Spain, didn't like it and wanted to come home. Parents said no. They had spent their life savings etc. she's a zzzzz list tennis player who nobody ever heard of.

Ever since Victoria Beckham decided to pay her promoter to sell her as a style icon, after she could no longer dance behind more talented Spice Girls for the attention she craves, I stopped buying women's magazines, as they completely changed from having interesting and informative articles with classy style, to telling me I should want to be a cheap looking orange wag with an obvious fake chest I like showing off. I sometimes wonder if the media constantly promoting over hyped and talentless celebs like Kard' & Beck', is designed to dumb down society and lower the standards of style. Or if they've realised that there's money to be made from appealing to the lowest common denominator, and the kind of girls who dream of meeting a rich man as dumb as them, such as a footballer or reality TV star who has neck tattoos, so they can make a living selling dumb stories about their designer handbag they can't pronounce the name of.
Then if anybody can see they're nothing special, the dumbed down masses who get confused when people can think for themselves, say they must be jealous because they're rich. Even if they're a dumb magazine article away from selling their children into the talentless celeb industry to use for their own attention from bankruptcy.
England men aren't ever going to win anything until they get away from David Beckham's influence. He ignored his Man Utd manager when asked to concentrate on football, than going along with his wife using his position to be like the Kard'. He was only one to miss a penalty in the Euros, getting England kicked out. Then he went to Spain where he was just there for the celeb image to sell shirts to kids, but was on the bench most of the time. Then he went to LA to creep around Hollywood actors, but as soon as the London 2012 Olympics started, they came back and were allowed to use it for more attention than the amazing Olympians who made Britain 3rd on the medal chart.
Then his emails where hacked where he obviously expected a Knighthood for hanging around Pr William at charity events.

@LilyPAnderson 😂

They're loads of celebrities that I never understood the hype about. I just pay no attention to them. People get called jealous when they go on weird angry rants 😂

Also so what if he ignored his manager, footballers are humans, not robots, they're not always going to do what they're told.

Totally agree. At least DB was pleasing to watch when he played his best and his free kicks were amazing. But he didn't seem quite right in the head (or the prospect of dizzying levels of fame got to his head) when he kept putting football second after Victoria and this seems at odds with his insistence on claiming that he was a serious professional and football was his life. The fact that in the documentary he stated with a glint in his eye that Alex Ferguson had wanted him to marry a "local girl and not a superstar" was telling firstly because it showed how DB likely considered himself destined for better things than a mere "local girl", but secondly it also showed DB's own standards when it came to his idea of a "superstar". VB was only ever a star as far as she was in the SG, a she had no discernible talent as a performing artist in her own right and DB doesn't seem to show any real interest in the SG's music or VB's identity as a performing artist, merely the image she represented. But the timing of their union was a gift from heaven for their "brand". From watching early interviews with her, VB was likeable as she was giggly and kind of gauche, not afraid to be herself. But as the "brand" has grown she has evolved into this hollow, highly manufactured individual who takes herself way too seriously. She comes across as insecure and as someone who wants to distance herself from her "chavvy" image and as a result she just seems very pretentious and repressed. She certainly is not a true icon of style or beauty but is aided by the shallow reality celebrity culture our media loves to push onto us in an age where class and high standards don't seem to matter much any more.

So many posts trying to prove that Beckham wasn’t a talented footballer. I played hockey at school. I could have practised all day long everyday and still wouldn’t have made it to county level.

As I said upthread most of us fall into the area of being mediocre but with training and practise can achieve amazing things (of course with some sports you can have a physical advantage because of accidents of anaotomy). Very few people are naturally talented and very few are duffers. Maybe in this sport you are a different - although I am sure that you excel at other things.

🤣🤣
I was better at sport than many people at my school. With training I could have been better but never exceptional.

Tatslookawful · 19/10/2023 13:04

Do you think Romeo was pushed re: tennis as hard as Ted pushed David? Did David almost rebel after making it at Man U?

Milkmaninthemist · 22/10/2023 09:11

Do you think he expected Rebecca Loos to keep quiet or her interview has come as a surprise?

SequinsandStiIettos · 22/10/2023 09:43

“He can say whatever he likes of course, and I understand he has an image to preserve, but he is portraying himself as the victim and he’s making me look like a liar, like I’ve made up these stories. He is indirectly suggesting that I’m the one who has made Victoria suffer.”

Well, exactly.
I'm aware that on MN it's often cherchez la femme/vitriol for the other woman etc but the "D"H has to bear the bulk of the responsibility. He's the wanker who chose to break his vows ffs.

giddymonday · 22/10/2023 09:53

yes, I agree with Rebecca. He's portraying himself as the victim of her "lies" by implicitly talking about the effect it (rebecca speaking the press) had on them both without actually denying having an affair.

Milkmaninthemist · 22/10/2023 11:09

It’s a weird one though because the Beckhams could have just left it out and surely would have realised that by mentioning it (I haven’t seen the documentary so I don’t know how much of a focus there was on this) that it would stir up interest again in RL and the affair.

I’m very confused as to why they’ve put themselves n this position. Did they really think she woukdnt hit back?

I felt the absence of a denial was a tacit admission that he had an affair with her. I think they are smart enough to know she'd probably be contacted by journalists and were ok with that.

Milkmaninthemist · 22/10/2023 12:08

Yep, I'm sure they must have been.

pilates · 22/10/2023 13:27

I didn’t realise Rebecca is related to Piers Morgan second cousin I believe 😯

He just doesn’t appear the type to cheat, he did seem very in love with her

OP, I work in comms and often times with celebs.

What you see is not what you get.

He's cheated many, many times. She probably still knows it's going on. But it's all about brand beckham. Sorry but smoke and mirrors.

Hellenabe · 22/10/2023 15:59

This may end up being deleted but I was at one of the national newspapers around the time Ashley Cole and Cheryl split up. The funny thing I found out was she allowed him to see other people as long as he wasnt found out. I often wondered whether VB was the same.

Kimten · 22/10/2023 16:19

The rumour I heard a few times is that Cheryl is a lesbian. Allegedly.

Hellenabe · 22/10/2023 19:04

@Kimten yes that's actually true as well. Its all very weird and had I not heard it through relatively official sources, id have thought it mad. But I guess they aren't hurting anyone.

RosiePeel · 22/10/2023 20:35

Coming to this thread a little late but my goodness what were the Beckhams thinking?!

David comes across as a very selfish and big headed man, I hated all the frequent pauses where he pretended he was going to cry - the whole thing was so contrived. I used to think he was down to earth (seems ridiculous now). Victoria didn’t come across fantastically either but in all honesty I just feel sorry for her knowing how she was treated by him.

The worst part is the way they made out he was somehow the victims in the cheating scandal?! Imagine the power and influence he had over Rebecca Loos. No wonder she’s spoken out. Why would the Beckhams bring this all up again after 20 odd years?!
