Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Has a doctor seen him? If not I would go and insist one takes a look at him sooner rather than later (and I'm really not someone who says that lightly).

I second that - if the pain is getting much worse, I think it would be good to push for someone to come and see him sooner.

HolaPepper · 23/09/2023 10:08

He needs to be seen and assessed by a doctor.

It could be anything, including lesser known medical conditions which doctors will assess for.

I hope you are seen soon.

itsgettingweird · 23/09/2023 10:08

Agree. He's getting worse at a significant rate.

I'd point out how bad he's got in 6 hours and ask how bad it could get in a few more whilst waiting to be seen.

Beautifulsunflowers · 23/09/2023 10:09

can you ask for stronger pain relief?
your poor boy. And poor you too - it’s awful watching them in pain and feeling so helpless.

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 10:09

I've asked about seeing a dr but they said there aren't any currently in a&e so they said I just have to wait

Glad he's in the right place. Hope he gets seen soon.

Ostryga · 23/09/2023 10:19

If they refuse care and your son is in a lot of pain call PALS. They will be able to dredge up a dr - trust me!

What sort of a&e has no doctor? Is there a bigger hospital with a bigger a&e that you could get to easily?

I'm getting really worried on your behalf now - your son is presenting with classic appendicitis symptoms and its not a condition that will wait.

In your position I would ask to speak to the person in charge (insist really), tell them you think your child has appendicitis and ask them what should happen next.

If they say you have to wait tell them to put it in writing, and to sign and date it.

One final thing - if the pain should suddenly disappear then he needs to see a doctor immediately and do not let them discharge him without checking his crp levels (this is a blood test).

My son was admitted to hospital last year with something that presented in a similar way to appendicitis but wasn't. He had a lot of urgent checks to eliminate appendicitis as that was even more of concern than what he did have, which kept him in for 3 weeks.

They should be taking your son's symptoms very seriously .

@DisquietintheRanks I've asked the nurses to come and look at him again. They've said because he's only 4 they don't normally get appendicitis this young so it's probably not that. She felt his stomach and he was screaming when she touched it but then she said she thinks it's probably just a sickness bug. I just really don't think it is

Is he diabetic op?

DisquietintheRanks · 23/09/2023 10:42

It's true that 4 year olds rarely get appendicitis. But sometimes they do and it can get overlooked because 4 year olds rarely get appendicitis. This happened to a neighbour's daughter who ended up with peritonitis (burst appendix). They tried to send her dd home when the pain went and she had to threaten to call the director of the hospital at home to get them to do the blood test (she was a midwife at the same hospital).

I really don't want to alarm you unnecessarily, I really hope they're right and it is a tummy bug. But it's her daughter I'm thinking of when I'm posting on this thread.

Just because 4 year olds don't usually get it doesn't mean yours doesn't have it.

Be pushy about this. You know your child and know he's not right.

Stressedafff · 23/09/2023 10:50

Appendicitis for me started near the belly button. I hope he’s okay x

Just because it's rare doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

You need to be your son's voice here. Appendicitis kills if left untreated. I don't want to scare you but your son needs medical treatment ASAP.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/09/2023 11:12

Poor soul. I hope you are seen very soon

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 11:15

Dr has just seen him, he is concerned but doesn't think appendix as actually when he pressed his stomach he screamed when he pressed the left rather than the right. The dr has just gone to speak to his boss now he said to see what the next step will be

At a similar age my son had excruciating pain in lower abdomen that was caused by a twisted testicle. It took a while to be diagnosed at A&E.
I hope your son is better soon.

DisquietintheRanks · 23/09/2023 11:20

It's good the doctor has seen him. Now he's in the right hands.

FixTheBone · 23/09/2023 11:26

You've described pretty much every classic sign of classic appendicitis, from crouching while walking, through to a Rosving's sign (pain in the right lower quadrant when the left is pressed).

Hopefully they'll be taking this seriously and getting some bloods and ideally a scan done ASAP.

rainbowstardrops · 23/09/2023 11:27

Thank goodness the dr has seen him at last!

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 11:31

Drs just come back, they are going to do a load of blood tests and observe him for a while. Once we have the blood results we should know what the next step is

Well done @daydreaming3

Keep being the advocate that your ds needs. Yes, the NHS is overstretched and understaffed but times like this make it more important to be that voice.

Hopefully your ds will start to feel better soon x

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 11:39

@Muchtoomuchtodo thank you. I'm just so worried about him. He's just burst in to tears because he wants to lie on his other side but it's too painful for him to move himself so I had to lift him up and roll him over. Something can't be right if he's in this much pain!

🥲 my heart is br asking for a 4yo I don't even know. Your poor lad.

I hope you're doing ok? This cannot be easy for you watching him in so much pain. Remember to look after yourself too because he'll need you. Flowers

coffeestrongblacknosugar · 23/09/2023 11:49

poor wee soul, I hope they work out what is wrong with him soon. I remember when I was about 12 I had gastroenteritis and could only lie in the foetal position as it hurt so much any other way.
