DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

My DD had exactly the same thing when she was 5 - presented as a likely case of appendicitis but turned out to be mesenteric adenitis brought on by a respiratory virus. In her case, the MA symptoms arrived before the respiratory ones. Hope you get some answers ASAP and hope your DS starts to feel better soon.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/09/2023 13:10

Ask for some oramorph if paracetamol and ibuprofen doesn't help. Appendicitis doesn't usually come on so severe so quickly. Bloods will show if his infection markets are up.

Just wondering if he's been playing with toys that either have a small button cell battery or magnets in them? Could he have swallowed them?

I'm hoping that the X-Ray will show something that you're not seeing on the outside.

Wishing you and your little boy all the best.

Definitely ask him. They are lethal.

Has anyone already mentioned mesenteric adenitis (I’ve not read all posts except yours). DS had this when a little older than your DS. It is painful abdomen but he was also sick and had a fever. I think it’s basically a viral infection but the mesenteric lymph nodes swell up and become painful. If it’s not his appendix I would ask about that. DS was awake all night in pain but by the time he saw the GP he was asked if his tummy hurt and he said no 🙄 (Luckily I don’t think GP thought I’d made it up). Hope he fells better soon

Forgot to add he doesn't have a temperature, just feels cold and clammy to the touch. I'm worried if I take him in anywhere and it's just trapped wind they will think we've wasted their time”

Please don’t worry about that. A friend who is a doctor told me she’d rather see 99 children who were fine than miss one who isn’t.

Please seek medical advice. Hope all is well.

I was about to reply about mesenteric adenitis.

My daughter is still unwell with this 3 weeks on, but that's how hers started (triggered by a stomach bug). Severe pain around tummy button, intermittent temperature. We've had scans which ruled out appendicitis, but showed swollen lymph nodes. No one mentioned MA until I got Googling and then was told that this is the name for it by GP.

She's been in a lot of pain too, and like you was concerned about the amount of pain she was in. She can now stand up but shouts in pain. Tummy very very sensitive. Feel like she's living on painkillers too but doesn't seem much else we can do. Rest, hot water bottles, and treat any constipation.

Iamnotalemming · 23/09/2023 13:28

OP just wanted to send you a big hug, you must feel frantic. You are doing so well being strong for your DS. Keep advocating for him. 💐

PollyAmour · 23/09/2023 13:34

Poor little fella. I hope they find out what the problem is and he is comfortable and painfree soon. It's awful seeing your child in pain and being unable to do anything about it.

Jenasaurus · 23/09/2023 13:37

My DS swallowed a cell battery when he was 2. It showed up on an Xray that it had split open luckily it was an almost empty one. My dad was changing the battery over in a calculator when my ds confused it for s chocolate button. He bled a bit but is OK now. He is 34 and no adverse effects. I hope your sin feels better soon x

Curlyevie · 23/09/2023 13:39

Hope he is feeling better soon x

Sapphire387 · 23/09/2023 13:39

Sending you and your son best wishes, hope he is feeling much better soon. You definitely did the right thing taking him to hospital. x

AInightingale · 23/09/2023 13:42

Yes my son had this at about 5/6 - up all night, you always think appendix. It was actually a bug, we took him to out of hours and the tests ruled out appendicitis- apparently you can't jump, stretch or stand up straight with it? I do recall that he had days of diarrhoea following the onset of it. The other possibility that occurs to me (again from bitter experience) is a faecal impaction - is he a very fussy eater? Though this usually manifests itself as odd motions, incontinence etc.

Balloonhearts · 23/09/2023 13:47

Hope you find the cause quickly OP. And for the record I used to work in a hospital and they would rather see a dozen children who were fine than miss one who wasn't.

Peekingovertheparapet · 23/09/2023 13:47

Mesenteric Adenitis is the diagnosis my child ended up with, but it was serious, and we missed a holiday over it. It’s the big differential diagnosis for appendicitis so definitely worth checking out

OSU · 23/09/2023 13:52

Best of luck OP x

nocoolnamesleft · 23/09/2023 13:54

I really don't like the speed of progression. If the bloods don't look like appendicitis, it might be worth asking the team if they think it could be any other form of acute surgical abdomen. They're much rarer than appendicitis, but there are things like intussusception, internal hernia, and volvulus that can be just as needing of surgical input but don't show up as well as appendicitis on bloods. But there can be a raised lactate, which is at least tested a lot more often than it used to be.

Flyingfup · 23/09/2023 13:55

Best wishes OP. At least he is being admitted and fully checked.
At that age mine reacted horribly to a stomach bug. Ended up in A and E and being admitted. 12 hours later the DAnd V started and the pain/almost passing out stopped.
If he is allowed to eat and drink work hard on keeping hydration up. Small sips of anything he will drink.

Dominoeffecter · 23/09/2023 13:59

Poor little thing

stayclosetoyourself · 23/09/2023 14:01

I presume he's now on the paeds assessment unit ?

WhichOfThePickwickTripletsDidIt · 23/09/2023 14:02

Your poor little DS, I really hope he will be OK. It's awful when they are in pain.

Songbird74 · 23/09/2023 14:04

Sending you a handhold @daydreaming3 - I hope they get to the bottom of it soon! Have they mentioned the possibility of a twist in the bowel? A little boy I know had similar symptoms - may be worth asking. Hope you get an answer soon x

momonpurpose · 23/09/2023 14:06

Hoping your little boy is better quickly ! Sending hugs

Reetnice · 23/09/2023 14:08

Poor guy :( I’m praying he feels better soon! I hope they thoroughly check him over. Sending you guys lots of love xx

Natsku · 23/09/2023 14:13

I hope he's on a ward now and further tests have been done. Poor little lad. It could still be a tummy bug, I had gastroenteritis once and was in absolute agony, similar to the pain I had when I had appendicitis. But other conditions need to be ruled out first, glad you took him to the hospital.
