DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

@itsgettingweird thank you, I'm trying to hold it together so he doesn't see me worried! I've had some really bad experiences with the hospital we are in so I just keep panicking they will send him home like this

@daydreaming3 with those symptoms, I would ask about malrotation and volvulus. It can occur when the gut twists and causes a blockage. Sometimes it is found at birth, I am aware of it as late as in 5 year olds. My DS had it at 5 weeks. Is he vomiting more green bile, that smells like excrement?

I'm so sorry if this is more worrying than helpful, but it's not a well known diagnosis and needs to be explored promptly. My DS is fine now, almost 21 with a cast-irom digestive system.

Sending all good wishes to you and your DS - you are advocating brilliantly for him.

Poor love, my sister had appendicitis at 4 it started with sickness and a stomach ache. My friend son had it at 6 and his started with pain in the belly button and it then suddenly moved to the side. Hope he's better soon x

determinedtomakethiswork · 23/09/2023 12:01

I'm really glad you're in hospital and the doctor has seen your son. I hope he makes a really fast recovery.

Cupofteafortwo · 23/09/2023 12:09

Hope the m little man is fine soon. So worrying for both of you. Trust your instincts.

treeinthedistance · 23/09/2023 12:09

Oh poor little chap. I hope he feels much better soon.
If they tried to send him home like this I would refuse to leave.
All my fingers crossed for you that you get an answer soon.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 23/09/2023 12:17

I'm sure you're in the right place. Your poor boy is clearly in such pain that it needs exploring. It may be nothing serious but you'd have been irresponsible not to seek medical advice. Try not to worry too much.

Pumpkinpie1 · 23/09/2023 12:18

I hope they get it sorted for you x x

HolaPepper · 23/09/2023 12:22

I'd also ask them to check for intussusception.

It can present like this and be mistaken for a sickness bug in the early stages. The pain gets worse within a day or two.

Hopefully they can rule that out. I'm not a doctor. I have a child who had this.

LakieLady · 23/09/2023 12:25

Poor little chap, I hope they find the cause and sort it out soon, OP.

Shopper727 · 23/09/2023 12:28

Have they given him anything else for the pain?
poor soul. It is young for appendicitis I’ve not nurses many children that young but perhaps 2 in 20 years so can happen. You did the right thing getting him checked over. Surprising leaving a child in pain in a waiting room is there no paeds assessment unit in the hospital? I’d ask so you’re being cared for by paediatric nurses and drs in a more suitable environment for a 4 year old. They likely want to make sure bloods are done and back before referring up but I hope your little boy is feeling better soon op

Babyghirl · 23/09/2023 12:29

@daydreaming3
My niece was 2 when she told my brother her dad her stomach was really sore and burning, turned out her appendix had burst, and you can get appendix pain on the left side even thou they are on your right side, hope your lb is OK and it's nothing serious x

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 12:33

I've just had a little cry to a lovely nurse as he's not himself and I'm really worried. They agreed that they were hoping he would just perk up after medicine and as he hadn't they want to get him to a ward asap as they don't think they can treat him in a&e. They've also booked an X-ray. They've gone to chase up a bed on a ward for him now.

Your poor boy!!I really hope he feels better soon xxx

BreatheAndFocus · 23/09/2023 12:42

Could it be colic? What you’ve described sounds exactly like me when I get it. Colic isn’t just wind, it can be agonising - almost unbearable pain. A bad attack can make me pale, faint and sweaty. My DS had it as a child and spent time in hospital twice with it because they wanted to rule out other things.

I take Buscopan for normal attacks, but once I had to see an emergency doctor and they gave me a prescription tablet that was stronger.

If it could be colic, tell him not to strain at all to break wind. It makes the pain worse and does indeed centre it round the tummy button.

I hope he’s better soon, poor thing.

Notsuredontknow · 23/09/2023 12:48

Thinking of you Op, and wishing your little boy some rest and comfort soon. I really hope they get to the bottom of it quickly x

MimsyBorogroves · 23/09/2023 12:51

Thinking of you OP.

Minfilia · 23/09/2023 12:52

One of the warning signs for appendicitis is if you press the left side, the right side hurts more (where the appendix is!) so it could be that. I hope someone points that out to the doctor who examined him!

DS was throwing up what looked like green pesto when he had a burst appendix. Does it look like that?

HumourReplacementTherapy · 23/09/2023 12:56

My friends 4yr old grandson was fobbed off and sent home on 4 occasions.
It did turn out to be appendicitis
So it can happen. Hope it's not but they do sound like they're taking it seriously

Helpmepleaseimbusy · 23/09/2023 12:57

He may ahve appendicitis I'd ho to the hospital

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 11:15

Dr has just seen him, he is concerned but doesn't think appendix as actually when he pressed his stomach he screamed when he pressed the left rather than the right. The dr has just gone to speak to his boss now he said to see what the next step will be

Ds' appendix was not in the normal place and was twisted round, so he didn't present totally "normally".
Have they taken bloods? They did with ds and concluded it probably was appendicitis from that-I think it was infection markers. Although ds nearly had the surgeons refusing as he said the pain (that he couldn't stand up with) was 2/10. He always under states that-has never got above a 4 (after the operation because they couldn't do keyhole). The paediatrician was certain though.

They should be able to see with an xray or scan if it's in an unusual place.

But if it is the operation may take longer than expected. It's normally 1 hour; ds was over 4 hours.

Whatishappenin · 23/09/2023 13:02

Sounds like appendicitis, especially the not being able to stand up straight. Poor little chap. I hope he’s okay.

Mumdiva99 · 23/09/2023 13:05

I hope he feels better soon. Poor little thing.

LookItsMeAgain · 23/09/2023 13:06

Just wondering if he's been playing with toys that either have a small button cell battery or magnets in them? Could he have swallowed them?

I'm hoping that the X-Ray will show something that you're not seeing on the outside.

Wishing you and your little boy all the best.
