Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

I work in Theatres and have recovered children who were suspected of having appendicitis, be diagnosed with this when it is normal.

daydreaming3 · 25/09/2023 12:20

@Inyournewdress thank you that's very kind, I certainly don't feel that way but I'm trying to push my sickness to the side and focus fully on my son as I just want him to start feeling better. He's just managed to stay awake long enough to eat a few grapes and an ice lolly so hopefully we are making progress!

I came on ( a bit late in the day) to say perhaps mesenteric adenitis as my daughter used to get this occasionally, often when fighting off some other bug, or in very very cold weather bizarrely. She seems to have grown out of it since age about 11, but yes, she would be writhing in pain

ArabeIIaScott · 25/09/2023 12:38

Hope you and your DS are feeling better very soon.

Stylestuck · 25/09/2023 12:45

Not sure if anyone else has said this but I had chronic tonsillitis as a child and it often caused excruciating stomach pain. Apparently there are glands in the stomach that can swell when the throat becomes infected. Usually the first sign I had tonsillitis was the stomach pain. So hopefully it is just that.

My DS was 3 and he complained of tummy pain, and he was generally unwell although not in as much pain as you describe OP. I left it for a few days to see if it was just a tummy bug and if he would pull around if it was viral.

It was tonsillitis, he ended up really poorly, he never complained of a sore throats, just tummy pain. The Dr said that can be quite common.

AussieManque · 25/09/2023 13:12

@daydreaming3 please consider wearing a tight fitting mask preferably N95 and ventilating your house to prevent your son catching your illness on top of his current sickness. There's a high chance it's COVID, it might take a few days to show up on tests, do swab your throat too.

I hope the two of you recover quickly.

Worddance · 25/09/2023 13:42

What a nightmare. Wishing you both a speedy recovery.

ManyATrueWord · 25/09/2023 13:43

Following this thread, so glad the outcome is looking more positive now.

Highfivemum · 25/09/2023 14:21

oh you poor things. What a worrying time for you and it is awful to see your child in pain
one of my DC had severe tonsillitis and literally was in terrible agony in their stomach. The Doc said the food was being poisoned going down. 😳how true that is I don’t know but once the tonsillitis was cured they were back to Normal
best wishes

A friend’s little boy had something where his intestine sort of twisted itself, causing a blockage and a lot of pain. Any chance it could be something similar?

He'd be incredibly sick of that happed. Shocked and vomiting dark green vomit.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2023 15:12

@PamelaAndreaGryglaszewska a Volvulus

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2023 15:13

Intussusception I mean. Not volvulus.

LookItsMeAgain · 25/09/2023 15:14

@daydreaming3 - I'm very very pleased that it wasn't what I suggested a good few posts back at this stage. I would be concerned however that the medical staff couldn't actually tell you what is/was wrong with your boy. When they put the question mark before the condition they are querying whether their patient, your son, has this condition. They don't know and they have now discharged you on multiple occasions from the hospital.
I realise that things are really tough at the moment with the Consultants and Junior Doctors being on strike but if you can, perhaps get a second opinion, privately.

I genuinely hope that the tonsillitis is on the mend, that your stomach/vomiting bug has left your system and that you and your boy are both on the mend.

rainbowruthie · 25/09/2023 15:29

Keeping you both in my thoughts Flowers

itsgettingweird · 25/09/2023 15:48

Oh no. Sorry to hear your poorly too.

Hope you're both on the mend soon Flowers

Just got round to checking his discharge notes and they have put this on there. It wasn't ever mentioned to me whilst we were there but I know a few people on this thread have suggested it so that much be what the drs think is causing the stomach pains.

My DS had this. Externally vicious stomach pain. It was confirmed with an ultrasound.

Differentstarts · 25/09/2023 16:35

Hope you both start feeling better soon 💐

intussusception. I suggested this earlier, but given the time frame I doubt it's this now. intussusception usually causes ongoing and intensifying pain that gets significantly worse over a short period of time.

I'm not a doctor.

OP if you little boy vomits more bile and / or shows signs of blood in his vomit or stools then get to A&E pronto.

FYI, blood in vomit can look a bit like dark red grit. I sincerely hope this doesn't appear for you, but I wish I'd known this when I had a very poorly child!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/09/2023 17:36

Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sure you could do without the D&V at the moment
I was thinking it was what's listed on the discharge letter but couldn't think of the exact term
I do hope the antibiotics start to work soon and you are both feeling better

Peekingovertheparapet · 26/09/2023 06:04

I do think his diagnosis of tonsillitis plus mesenteric Adenitis could very well be correct. The query is because the MA is not really a diagnosis that can be conclusively made, sometimes the glands are seen on ultrasound, but not always. It’s more of a diagnosis by elimination.

when my child was in a&e the consultant there said she had seen kids taken down for surgery because everyone is so sure it’s a surgical abdomen only to find its MA. It can be incredibly painful.

That said, he will need to keep going back until he goes in the right direction (and MA can be a bit up and down over a few weeks).

if you are too unwell can his father take him in if needs be?

lilyblue5 · 26/09/2023 07:03

Hope you and your son are doing better today OP. I’ve been regularly checking this thread and thinking of you x

coffeestrongblacknosugar · 26/09/2023 07:11

Hope you are both feeling a bit better today OP.

daydreaming3 · 26/09/2023 08:56

Much better update today... he's woken up full of beans! He's wanting to play and has asked for breakfast for the first time since being ill! He slept for 17 hours last night and was very lethargic but I think the antibiotics have finally kicked in. Hopefully this means he's finally recovering x
