Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Going by the many posts from other people, it seems like what my DS had really is very common! Swollen glands/lymph nodes in the intestines really can cause horrific pain and if there is an underlying infection elsewhere in the body this really could be it.

KenIsAnAccessory · 24/09/2023 20:50

Keep checking back to see if you and DS are ok, OP? Hope you're doing alright. Keep advocating for him.

Purplefoxes · 24/09/2023 20:51

Oh OP I hope your little boy is much better again soon. This rings big bells with what happened to our little boy. He was about 4 when he started getting stomach pains, almost always behind his belly button but sometimes migrating and often felt at night. Dr suggested abdominal migraines. After the Covid vaccine interestingly he was vomitting and in severe pain so we spent some time in A and E, gastritis was suggested as OBS ok. Had an ultrasound and nothing structural seen. He's 6 now and still occasionally gets the pains behind his belly button. We've had dietitian and consultant appointments etc. The only thing which correlates is anxiety, stressful events and an acid stomach so certain foods may aggrevate such as orange juice or tomatoes. Funnily enough this runs in the family but I'd never have thought a child would suffer. Just thought I'd mention it incase it might help in your situation. Age 4-5 is when worries can ramp up, especially with school starting etc, especially if you are prone to anxiety genetically.

coxesorangepippin · 24/09/2023 20:56

Get your mummy hat on op, he's four and needs to you to stay there and insist he doesn't leave till he's better

💐 you're in our hearts

Not to scare you but have you heard of Martha's rule?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/04/daughter-died-hospital-families-treatment-martha-rule

Her mother is fighting for the right to ask for a second opinion if you are not happy with treatment. She fell onto the handle bars of her bike and injured her pancreas I believe.

Just sharing to back you up if you are not happy with your son's treatment. Hope he recovers soon.

My daughter Martha died needlessly in hospital – we believe this change would have saved her | Merope Mills

Martha’s Rule would give patients the right to call for an urgent second opinion, which could have prevented the unforgivable mistakes made in her case, says journalist Merope Mills

StuckintheUSA · 24/09/2023 21:03

Strep throat is a big thing where I am, in the USA. DS had it a few times when he was young, and parents here seem to be more aware of the symptoms, which include stomach pain, vomiting, and kidney problems. DH once got it from DS and ended up with an acute kidney infection (treatable with antibiotics). Ask a doctor to swab your son's throat to see if Strep A is present, if they haven't done so already.

Justhereforaibu1 · 24/09/2023 21:03

Gosh what a rollercoaster. I really hope they get to the bottom of it OP you are in my thoughts

Peekingovertheparapet · 24/09/2023 21:06

Both of my kids have had recurrent tonsillitis and abdominal pain does feature. Did nobody look in his throat and ears yesterday?

I also get tonsillitis from time to time and again for me, abdominal pain, flank pain, and inner thigh pain are characteristic.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 24/09/2023 21:06

I hope you find out soon what's causing this.

I hope tour son is feeling better v soon xx

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 18:15

We've just seen the same dr as yesterday. They randomly looked in his throat (he hasn't mentioned it being sore) and realised he's got severe tonsillitis, they also think there is a possibility of pneumonia so he is going to have another X-ray. They also said they can't rule out his appendix so are going to get the surgical team to come and see him. His temp is now 39.3 despite calpol and ibuprofen. There's talk of him being discharged tonight if the results come back clear but I've said I don't feel comfortable with him being sent home until I see some clear improvement and we have a plan in place.

It's frustrating that this didn't happen earlier.

When I moved to the UK, one of the oddest things about the health system to me was that doctors don't routinely collect first-hand evidence of a patient's state, rather than take their word for it.

Where I come from, it would have been difficult then - may be different now - to get away from the doctor's without having your lymph nodes and abdomen felt and your throat looked at, whatever your complaint.

OP I'd be worried too. Keep advocating and I hope you get answers soon.

I've recently had a virus which started with the worst stomach pain I've ever experienced. It came on out of nowhere and I was very close to going to A&E (only didnt as the pain was so bad!).Within 24 hours it went to be replaced with a horrible flu type infection which ultimately ended up with me being admitted to hospital. Hope he"s better soon

Lastchancechica · 24/09/2023 21:34

I don’t want to give you false reassurance but this is precisely how covid started for us. Intense tummy pain, feeling nauseous and fever. Later throat is red raw etc.

Lastchancechica · 24/09/2023 21:36

We have the latest variant. Has he been tested?

SleepyJim · 24/09/2023 21:39

Yes I wondered about covid too, although of course it could be so many other things too. They aren't routinely testing in hospitals now I don't think?

CleansUpButWouldPreferNotTo · 24/09/2023 21:49

Chiming in to send best wishes - you're doing the right thing insisting on getting tests and answers before they send you home. Fingers crossed for your boy's speedy recovery..

BusyCaz · 24/09/2023 21:52

Hope everything goes well op xxx

Oioicaptain · 24/09/2023 21:56

A friend's child bumped her abdomen whilst at a trampoline park whilst on holiday.she got checked 9ut but was sent home. The next day she was in a lot of pain which worsened. Blood tests were initially fine. She started to have a temperature and was in a lot of pain so her parents took her back to hospital and they discovered infection markers in her blood. They gave antibiotics which worked initially, but then her infection took a stronger hold and she was very unwell. It transpired that she had injured her bowel, which had then started to leak.

I also had a friend with recurring pain that ended up in hospital for a few days before being discharged with pain killers and antibiotics. Her stomach pain was right on the front of her stomach. She improved, went on holiday abroad for 2 weeks and then went downhill again. It transpired that she had appendicitis all along, which they had initially dismissed due to the location of the pain.

Painkillers and antibiotics can mask or delay symptoms. Bear in mind that sometimes people can appear to improve before going downhill, so do not hesitate to keep on seeking second opinions or keep taking him back (if discharged again soon). Trust your instinct.

Didicat · 24/09/2023 21:57

Hoping they manage to get his pain under control and give you some answers. Hoping you’ll get some sleep - gentle hugs

Clafoutie · 24/09/2023 21:58

We’re all rooting for you OP x

FlamingoQueen · 24/09/2023 21:59

Oh bless him. Do stand your ground and don’t leave until you know what it is / he vastly improves. Good luck Flowers

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 24/09/2023 22:02

The very best of wishes to u both, very well done for going back. As I said before, doctors are often keen to blame "a virus" when really it means that they havent diagnosed anything and are none the wiser! (I speak as a parent whose child had a disasterous outcome, so am keen that you trust your "mothers instinct" xx)

Did they test you for covid? That's how many people are experiencing it recently.

OP, your DS could have a throat infection, covid, etc, AS WELL as an acute abdomen. Don't let them fob you off if your instincts are that he is deteriorating, or very unwell.

Hope you have an okay night.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/09/2023 22:25

I'm really sorry your poor lad is back in again
As they have found tonsillitis, it's possible that the lymph nodes in the stomach/ groin are the source of his pain as they will be fighting the infection
I hope he's feeling better very sooon
Sending my best wishes to you too as it's so stressful when they're unwell

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 24/09/2023 22:25

Hope you get some answers soon. Sent up a prayer for you

reesewithoutaspoon · 24/09/2023 22:29

Echo what others have said. kids are prone to mesenteric adenititis where the lymph nodes in the abdo swell due to infection elsewhere and this can cause tummy pain. My DD was prone to this and it was usually a throat or ear infection that triggered it.
Small children are notoriously hard to diagnose, because its difficult to pin down exact symptoms. Hope he feels better soon and you are totally in the right to insist he's not discharged until he's better/they have answers
