Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Yes I'd also think you've caught this from your son, which is reassuring in a way as it means you're dealing with a virus rather than something more serious. Either Covid as PPs have said or a sickness bug. Hope you both feel better soon!

CarrotsAndCheese · 25/09/2023 07:59

@daydreaming3 It's probably too late now but I just wondered if your OH could take over from you at the hospital, i.e. bring your other child to the hospital, who you can take home and OH can stay with your son?

Really sorry you've got sick yourself now. Hope you both feel better soon x

justasking111 · 25/09/2023 08:06

You've caught a sickness bug FROM the hospital so they've thrown you out. That's unbelievable. My neighbour who had been in hospital for four weeks caught norovirus and COVID. They didn't kick her out. I'm so sorry OP.

She was an existing patient

she got covid and a sickness bug as well as her existing illness

of course they didn’t kick her out

they have done the right thing with the op to try to contain the spread

OP was in and out of hospital for 3 days with a sick and vomiting child. Chances are incredibly high that she caught it from him. Not sure why the "hospital ward" are clearly being blamed for giving OP the infection when the most obviously explanation is right there.

It's not unreasonable for the hospital to discharge them in light of stable symptoms and blood tests. If you were the parent of one of the other sick children then you wouldn't be too happy to have your kid exposed to norovirus from another family.

senparents · 25/09/2023 08:14

That’s awful they threw you out ??

When I had my youngest I got d and v when on the postnatal ward, I was in a 4 bed bay. They didn’t care at all!!! Told me to just drink more to stay hydrated then had a go at me when I asked them to watch baby as I had to go to the bathroom saying ‘we are busy we have paperwork to do’ then went mental when I took him in the bathroom with me

We got negative test results until day 5.

The new form of covid is brutal.

It actually feels like it was living in my stomach. The pain was horrendous. I felt sick, was sick but still the pain remained. My dd had exactly the same.
My throat then felt like sandpaper. My temperature is going up and down. I have a very dry cough now. I am aching from head to foot,

The symptoms seem to come and go, but it all started for all of us with stomach pain and D&V type symptoms.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/09/2023 08:16

Test for Covid, we've had lots of stomach pain/ sickness with it. You have 24 access, it's better to be at home than in hospital .

Mischance · 25/09/2023 09:02

You poor thing. I caught d and v whilst visiting late OH in hospital... it was on the ward ... he didn't get it. What a dreadful time for you all. Hope you will both be better soon.

Archymum · 25/09/2023 09:08

COVID. Swab throat as well as nose.

MotherEarthisaTerf · 25/09/2023 09:30

OMG you poor thing. Only just seen this thread now and it's a rollercoaster isn't it.

Can't believe the pain is still bad.

Get yourself some diarolyte solution to help you pass through the sickness bug quick as you can. Quarter of a slice of toast every 2 hours or so and little sips of water/diarolyte solution.

Now's the time to beg for help - I know if a friend asked me, my husband would have my kids and I could take your son into hospital until you were well again. I feel he would be better off on the ward than at home - you can video call him lots. Do you have a friend you can ask?

MotherEarthisaTerf · 25/09/2023 09:32

Also when my son was on the hospital ward and I was with him, there was another child there without his parents for a few hours. I know all the parents and nurses were looking out for him extra. If he has to go in without you it will be ok.

I might be tempted to present him to big children's hospital A&E get him in the right place if/when you decide to go back. If you take him in they may find you both a suitable room as you're both clearly infectious.

LittleBeansMum · 25/09/2023 09:35

I have been following this thread with interest and I really hope that your little lad feels better soon (and you of course!)

I am a little confused though. I completely understand why they couldn't allow you to stay if you were poorly and infectious, but surely they can't discharge your DS based on the fact you're poorly? How does that work?

I expect he needs to have a parent with him all the time. OP’s DH is at home caring for their other child. I would have thought the nurses would have been able to take care of their poorly son while they swapped roles, though.

BlueBox81 · 25/09/2023 09:44

To be fair to the hospital it does sound like they've done a thorough investigation and the only concrete thing they've found is the tonsilitis which can be treated with antibiotics at home. It could very well be this causing swollen glands in abdomen causing the stomach pain so probably not much else they can do at this stage other than wait and see.
So sorry for you OP it sounds horrendous! Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon and he will be on the mend.

lostpasswordagain · 25/09/2023 10:20

Sounds incredibly distressing and all the comments above have useful suggestions about what to test for.

One thing I haven't seen (apologies if I missed it) is diverticulitis. My son had it when he was younger and had very very similar symptoms. The thing that struck me most was going from completely incapacitated with pain and inability to move, to acting like nothing was wrong at all. The doctor explained that the attacks were horrific but when they stopped, all felt normal again. Until the next attack.

For us, the key was getting the right antibiotics because his had been caused by an infection. Once he had that, he recovered quickly. It was horrible but treatable.

From Healthline.com

Stomach pain could be a sign of undiagnosed T1D

Following the beans / squash / chocolate?

daydreaming3 · 25/09/2023 11:29

Just to confirm a few things. The hospital don't believe I caught a sickness bug from my son. He was only sick a few times which was just bile and they were 99% sure it was caused by pain as it only happened when they made him walk and then he doubled over in pain and threw up. He had no problems with his bowels either.

I was sat squashed between three babies in a&e who had a sickness bug from their parents (parents were chatting to me about it) and were sat in a&e on a fluid challenge so I'm pretty certain that's where I got it from.

The drs decided that due to his stomach feeling soft to the touch the likelyhood of appendicitis is apparently low so they were happy enough to send him home as there was no way I wanted to leave my 4 year old on his own when he is terrified of the drs. But that's why they have open access, they said if the pain in his stomach doesn't subside we have to take him back in.

He's still saying he can't walk but he did manage to stand up to go to the toilet so I don't know if what's putting him off now is the idea of pain rather than actual pain. Hes terrified because the pain was so bad the other day.

He's only had 2 lots of antibiotics so far so im going to give it 24 hours and see how he seems as the drs said we should start to see a difference by then.

Also to the poster who said I'd had confirmed covid I'm not sure where you read that but I definitely haven't. I will test today though just to make sure.

Thank again to all the supportive comments. It's been a very difficult few days and I just want my little boy to get better!

Just got round to checking his discharge notes and they have put this on there. It wasn't ever mentioned to me whilst we were there but I know a few people on this thread have suggested it so that much be what the drs think is causing the stomach pains.

Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

My daughter was diagnosed with mesenteric adonitis a couple of times , turned out she had coeliac disease

Maraa · 25/09/2023 12:02

My son had mesenteric adenitis (most deffo spelt that wrong) and I was so scared. It came on so suddenly and he was in agony. Driving him to an and e he was literally writhing around in pain screaming and I was scared he had appendicitis and it had burst with how much pain he was in. We spent the night in hospital and bloods confirmed it wasn’t appendicitis and after a week or so he made a recovery! Hoping your son recovers soon - nothing worse than seeing your kid in pain!! And hope you feel better soon x

Inyournewdress · 25/09/2023 12:14

I am so sorry you got sick OP, you poor thing. I really hope things settle for you both. Your latest replies are incredibly logical and well written for someone who is tired, stressed and unwell, I am very impressed! Your clarity will help your little boy I am sure xx
