DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

My son is 10 now and has had this since he was 4. It was only after his most recent trip to A&E they said it was mesenteric adenitis and I finally made the connection that it was always after a flare up of tonsillitis.

Pain is horrific and we had the same - being discharged and then back to A&E repeatedly.

Last time one surgeon was prepping him for surgery to remove his appendix - her words were 'if in doubt whip it out'.

Then the night shift came on who disagreed and discharged him home again.

It normally takes my son about a month to feel better - 2 weeks for the tonsillitis and then 2 weeks with the severe stomach pains. He's missed so much school.

It's good to know what it is but also really worried what happens next time as the pain is unbearable and they said they wouldn't give children anything other than calpol and nurofen - neither of which touch the pain.

Worried234 · 24/09/2023 23:39

My 10 year old had the same, back in June. I thought I was going mad. Back to hospital three times. Eventually it was diagnosed as Mesenteric Adenitis. Extremely painful, but thankfully not serious. I hope your little fella is on the mend asap

Dita73 · 24/09/2023 23:43

Poor little bub. I hope he’s ok and I hope you are too xx

surreygirl1987 · 24/09/2023 23:54

Really hope all is okay. How stressful!

TheFoz · 24/09/2023 23:58

Another vote for mesonteric adonitis. My daughter had it after tonsillitis. The pain was severe, then she’d get well for a few hours or a day, then it would come back again. Probably lasted close on two weeks with the pain on and off.

Marcipex · 25/09/2023 00:36

I hope things are okay x

You're in the best place

I have been following your posts @daydreaming3 since you were in A&E with your dear little one the first time. I didn't add anything at the time as I didn't think I had anything fresh to add, and I haven't got much to add now either. However I have remembered that my now dear departed mum told me that my brother had his appendix out before he was even 2 years old - he is 6 years older than me so I wasn't around at that time - so very young children can get appendicitis, therefore it should never not be considered to be a possibility.

Thankfully your DS's Dr's seem to be realising at last that they need to take this seriously, and therefore are re-doing some of the tests. Apparently until my brother had his appendix out he had been crying and screaming on and off for months (they probably thought it was gripe), but after his operation they told my DM that they thought that he had probably had a grumbling appendix for all of those months.

Can I suggest OP that if any of the Dr's try to insist that your DS goes home again before they have established what is wrong with him, please demand ask them to write down their reason for discharging him, and to point out in it that they are going against your instincts and wishes. Also ask them to make sure that they give their name and position in their letter to you. I am not talking about his legally required discharge form for his GP, but an in depth explanation to you as to why they think it is safe to discharge your son. before he has been completely well for at least 36 hours.

I feel so sorry for both your DS and you OP, what a miserable few days you have had. I hope that your gorgeous little boy makes a very quick recovery after they have found out what is making him so ill. Try and look after yourself whilst staying at the hospital Daydreamer 🩷 xx

I hope you are both ok. 💐

Your poor DC! Has he had a test for covid at all?

This sounds exactly how it went for my DC, then loads of symptoms followed after the stomach pain in the days after.

ittakes2 · 25/09/2023 06:07

Pain around belly button is small child can be headache

ittakes2 · 25/09/2023 06:16

I am sorry you are going through this - have the doctors ruled out whether he might have eaten magnets?

AlarmHater · 25/09/2023 06:35

I've been following your thread OP, I hope he's doing OK. Thinking of you all

I'd say it could be trapped gas from the beans, they can generate a lot of it. But probably best to seek medical help though.

I couldn't even make up the latest update! I have caught a sickness bug from the children's ward. So they had to discharge us at 1am as they said I wasn't allowed to stay and they didn't have a side room available that we could use so we didn't infect anybody else. They said they thought the best course of action is to discharge.
Luckily he had his X-ray done which came back clear. His bloods came back with some slight inflammation but they said the surgeons thought there wasn't any risk.

He's still exactly the same, won't walk or stand up from pain but they have given him antibiotics for his throat which will hopefully see some improvement soon. We've been given 48 hour access incase things don't improve.

So sorry to read your update OP. Have you and your son been tested for covid?

daydreaming3 · 25/09/2023 07:06

@SleepyJim no we haven't although I do test regularly anyway due to my job. I was negative before we went in to hospital to begin with but I'll try and do another test today once I can get out of bed!

everythingthelighttouches · 25/09/2023 07:08

I don’t know what to say.

SleepyJim · 25/09/2023 07:08

Yes I would test if you can, as PP have said sickness is a symptom of the new variant and could explain some of your sons other symptoms too. Really hope you are both feeling better soon.

BabyIcecream · 25/09/2023 07:22

Oh no you poor thing!

Although maybe it's more likely you've caught it from DS and he has had a sickness bug with extreme pain possibly from the swollen glands?

Hope you all feel better soon

Pandora55 · 25/09/2023 07:25

I'd test for Covid again too. It's run through my house recently and my dd only symptom was upper stomach pain and sporadic vomiting. She's a tough thing but she literally couldn't stand straight for 3 days. We tested but got negatives till day 3 as well. Hope you all get well soon x

LizzieSiddal · 25/09/2023 07:32

Hope the antibiotics kick in very quickly.

Thatsridiculous · 25/09/2023 07:37

Hi @daydreaming3

I have only just found your thread but as I started to read your earlier posts I immediately wondered if they checked his throat.

My DD gets recurring tonsillitis and last year on holiday she got exactly the same symptoms as your son. The difference though was that after she was sick (also bile) the pain went away for a little while. She was crying out with the pain. I immediately thought appendicitis too. We got seen by a practice nurse in a GP surgery where we were staying and she said the infection would have caused the pain?

Also to add DD also perked up significantly - of course just before we saw the nurse! The pain vanished for a while and she was as bright as a button when we went to hwt her checked.

I was coming to suggest checking his throat when I saw your latest update.
