To be confused about my partner's nationality

1000 replies

ForestryForever · 11/09/2023 22:04

Good evening,
My partner's parents were both born in Wales. They both lived and grew up in Wales. As adults they both left Wales and lived in England, where they remained.
Whilst married and living in England, they had a baby - my partner. My partner was born, raised in and grew up in England, and still lives in England.
What nationality is my partner?

I don't think being Welsh is an ethnicity otherwise I presume you would be totally different to the English? Aside from the language and maybe being slightly more Celtic (although English do have some Celtic DNA) you aren't any different?

It absolutely is an ethnicity, and is recognised as such:

@Pollyputhekettleon I know a family who are Cornish. But if you trace their family tree back by several generations they’re not from Cornwall. So their ethnicity, by your standards, is not Cornish. This is true of a lot of people, people migrate a lot and have done throughout history. So in order for your claims to be correct, he would need to get a DNA test to prove he has welsh ancestry. So would you tell those Cornish people they can’t call themselves Cornish?

Actually that is simplistic and now being found to be untrue as the English have more Celtic blood than previously thought in that they inter married with the British. It still isn't an ethnicity to me. You aren't really any different to most Northern Europeans.

Stop trying to erase the existence of groups your ancestors colonized. This is basic manners if nothing else. You could even try looking at your census form next time around.

List of ethnic groups - GOV.UK (ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk)

List of ethnic groups

Read about the 18 ethnic groups recommended for use by government when they ask for someone’s ethnicity in England and Wales.

Yes, I literally said that I was simplifying.

There is indeed a lot of mixing, but how does that change the fact that they’re separate ethnic group? If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be mixing, would they?

She is not Zambian , oppression, racism, segregation, power. We know what was going on in "North and South Rhodesia". The mass killer Dylan Roof was obsessed with it.

Democratic republic of the Congo , it's not Belgian 'Congo'.

Yes, that's why I said she is Albanian (now British). I used Belgian Congo as it was the name at the time. Changed to Zaire but without googling I couldn't remember which name is the current one (and didn't want to lose what I'd typed) so thanks for the addition on that. Not heard of Dylan Roof, will have a read so another thanks!

Google it.

I am bit sick and tired of this " we true Celts" bollocks. We are all a bunch of Mongols. I am pretty sure the Anglo Saxons did what what most invaders do as eventually intermarry with the locals. I doubt I have absolutely no Celtic blood whatsoever.

Octosaurus · 12/09/2023 08:59

Welsh

SweetcornFritter · 12/09/2023 09:00

Rod Stewart. Born and raised in London. Talks like a Londoner. 100% Scottish.

nettie434 · 12/09/2023 09:00

I voted YABU because I think it's so widely accepted that national identity isn't just about where you were born. Look at Joe Biden. He identifies as having Irish heritage but he could never have run for US president if he'd been born outside the USA.

People don't really use the term 'half' or a 'quarter' nationality anymore because of its associations with the racist classifications in some countries which existed in the past between people of mixed heritage. People from a White English or White British background don't always appreciate this. However, I do think your partner was rude. If you'd been an English rugby fan telling him he was only 'half Welsh' outside the Millennium Stadium, then I could have understood his reaction but you are his partner.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 12/09/2023 09:01

Stick a Welsh and English person together. You wouldn't tell the difference.

Shoxfordian · 12/09/2023 08:50

Why is welsh or Cornish not on any official ethnicity forms then? @Pollyputhekettleon

Welsh is on the census forms by the way. We could have a discussion about why other subpopulations aren't separated out and Cornish nationalists would like to have that discussion. But it's quite pointless in a world where so many people are unaware that Welsh is an ethnicity, and so many believe being born in Britain entitles you to British citizenship. We're a long way from discussing Cornwall and Devon.

Oh well, be tired of it then 🤷🏻‍♀️ it doesn’t have to matter to you in order for it to matter to other people, whether you approve of this or not.

butterpuffed · 12/09/2023 09:02

He is Welsh as his parents are Welsh . However, his nationality is British , as are England, Scotland and Wales .Not sure about the two parts of Ireland .

Kiswahili · 12/09/2023 09:02

Let's say it : This is all about being white or not. You cannot be English, move to Wales and just because you are white call yourself or kids "Welsh" and pass as Welsh.

The English have their own ethnicity.

How about you campaign to get the census changed so that everyone must tick the Mongol box. Good luck with that. Welsh people exist, however much it apparently irritates you.

Tbf if it doesn’t matter then presumably it would also be fine to erase the English identity.

All are Welsh now 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

There were not "mixing" when Megan Markle was just "Black" hahahaha

This stuff is irrelevant. The majority of people who have Cornish parents cluster together genetically. The majority of those with Devon parents cluster together genetically. You can reasonably argue that they're distinct populations, separated by the river Tamar. The reason they're genetically distinct of course is that actually most people didn't move that far from where they were born throughout most of history, outside periods of mass migration where ethnicities dissolve and form.
