Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:35

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

Footage of police with guns drawn

Bodycam video shows Ohio police fatally shooting pregnant black woman

Ta'Kiya Young, 21, appears to advance the car towards an Ohio officer before a single shot is fired.

It horrifies me, it must be terrifying being black in the US, that poor man who was shot dead while out jogging as someone assumed he was running away from a crime, has always stuck with me.
Poor woman. I hope they get jail time.

Poppyblush · 02/09/2023 07:43

The woman was driving at the cop in a car ffs!!! She had been accused of stealing!! Why not just stop???

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:44

It looked to me like she was trying to drive out of the parking spot, not trying to run anyone over. I bet the officer won't even be sacked let alone charged with anything

So the response is to fire at her?

And she didn't drive 'at' him - she moved forward, bumping him. Clearly not a wise move, but the officers couldn't think of any other course of action than firing a shot into car so that it hit & killed her?

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:46

Why does AIBU seem to attract these posts in the first one or two replies 🤔 @Poppyblush

Well, he will be.

He's on leave, it will be investigated & he's unlikely to be found to have been correct in his actions.

It won't unfortunately bring back the woman or her baby.

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:47

Why have guns drawn at all?

Please don't blame an innocent woman for this.
Why the fuck was he standing in front of her car pointing a gun?
She hadn't stolen anything, she was just a mother doing hers shopping.
The officers committed murder.

They are so aggressive. I don’t think I’d want to get out of the car either. I do wonder if she took her foot off the brake. My car is an automatic and goes forward as soon as you do so it’d keep going if driver was incapacitated. Poor woman. My heart goes out to her family.

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:47

I hope you're right @EarringsandLipstick

The trigger happy cops in the US are terrifying. People don’t act rationally around them and try and escape as quickly as they can for fear of being shot. Police in the US have no where near the level or length of training as those in Europe and yet they are all allowed to carry lethal weapons.

the hun culture is so strange, confusing and scary, but nothing will change as Americans love their guns more than their kids or their lives s it seems.

I think most cars in the US are automatic, and the way the car rolled into a wall afterwards makes me think you could be right.

Hellocatshome · 02/09/2023 07:50

She slowly drove forwards, there was no danger of the policeman being severely injured or killed. If they had let her get away the worst possible outcome was someone had got away with shoplifting. Surely its better to let a potential shoplifter get away than kill them.

This is a really valid point. It's easy to forget that cars in the US are automatic, it's much much easier to accidentally edge forward than in a manual car.

Oysterbabe · 02/09/2023 07:50

It was insane of her to drive towards an armed officer in America but she paid too high a price.

penelopelady · 02/09/2023 07:50

I wonder if they will be tried under the ridiculous abortion laws as well? (Note I don't know the law in this state)
Poor woman and her family.

Poppyblush · 02/09/2023 07:50

But if police say stop, why not stop???

Ducksinthebath · 02/09/2023 07:50

Why not just stop? In a country where the police are notorious for shooting black citizens first, asking questions later; where they beat then to death on the streets for the heinous ‘crime’ of being black and out at night; where any interaction with law enforcement is immediately escalated to a life or death situation, no questions asked.

Gee, I wonder why someone would be incredibly nervous about stopping.

I expect it was an accident as she was terrified. No one’s going to be able to act calmly with a gun pointing at their face!

YellowChrysnthemum · 02/09/2023 07:51

She hadn't done anything wrong, they both had guns drawn, she was probably scared that if she got out they'd hurt her, being pregnant she didn't want to risk that. She didn't 'drive at him' as pp said the car moved very slightly forward. I don't expect she was thinking straight at that point. Fucks sake. I sincerely hope that officer goes to prison, and I'm shocked that the other one is back on duty, why have guns drawn at all? RIP. Utter bastards.

Because if she stops or gets out of the car she's just as likely to get shot and killed. Look at how many compliant innocent black people have been murdered by police in the last few years alone.
Also, she hadn't shoplifted. Even if she had, in what world does that warrant being shot??? They could have done literally anything else; taken her licence plate, even shot the tyres out so she couldn't drive off if they really wanted to question her. Shoot to kill should never ever ever be the first port of call.

You obviously have no idea what it is like to be a black person in America interacting with the police.
Do some research.

You have more faith than I have.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 02/09/2023 07:55

YANBU. These police officers act like they're in an action movie when it was one pregnant woman on her own disagreeing with them.
