Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:35

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

Footage of police with guns drawn

Bodycam video shows Ohio police fatally shooting pregnant black woman

Ta'Kiya Young, 21, appears to advance the car towards an Ohio officer before a single shot is fired.

Would never set foot in America due to fear of being shot. Such a backwards violent country.

Slippersandacuppatea · 02/09/2023 08:18

Oh good grief at people justifying this as she drove forwards. Who cares if she got away- it was shoplifting they were accusing her of not violence. None of this was proportionate

The fact she hadn’t even done it takes it to a whole new level

No wonder POC react in panic when police approach them with guns- it’s not like they won’t know how commonly they will get shot and possibly killed. I’d panic and try to get away too.

America is spiralling out of control

Good point about the abortion laws.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/09/2023 08:18

Wow, just, wow what I have I just seen!!

A policeman shooting someone because she won't get out of the car!

That poor poor woman and that poor family. Thank god we don't have guns here. What a place to live.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/09/2023 08:12

Idk if being compliant does help. Had she got out of the car, at the very least, they’d likely have slammed her to the floor, possibly injuring her baby. She was pregnant. Protecting her baby would have been her primary instinct.

God I hadn't even thought of that but I bet you are right. She probably didn't want them slamming her to the floor which they always seem to do. She must have been terrified.

Being black in America seems to be a capital offense. I have no idea what but something needs to be done. I don't know how training will help get rid of the level of inbuilt racism in these cops.

Prescottdanni123 · 02/09/2023 08:16

@Proudgypsy

Whether George Floyd was innocent or not, he didn't deserve what happened to him. And the plod that did that too him was also the polar opposite of a little sweetheart.

I totally agree. What I'm trying to say is that when the media breaks these stories all they are interested in is stirring up racial hate.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 02/09/2023 08:19

missmollygreen · 02/09/2023 08:17

She wasnt shot because of the shop lifting, she was shot because the police thought she was going to run them over

So move out the way. Not that hard and no need to shoot.

JustFrustrated · 02/09/2023 08:19

There's so much white privilege from the victim blamers in this thread it's horrifying.

As a white family, watching the news last night we both said the same

We wouldn't get out the car if we were black.

I wouldn't hear if I was alone. I'd drive to a police station, or make enough noise I'd attract attention (hopefully)

Other options the police could have used

Let her drive away, and send some officers (preferably black) to her home.

Left their guns holstered and calmly spoken to her.

Asked the store manager to attend, strength for both parties, in numbers

And even shooting her tyres out, though there was literally no reason to remove the guns from their holsters.

They claim they smashed the window to administer first aid - if she was so incapacitated she needed immediate first aid to the point you'd smashed a window over her, it's impossible she posed such a threat to life she required shooting in the fucking chest.

And given abortion is illegal in Ohio, he should be prosecuted for two murders. Which could mean the death penalty.

Put yourselves in the police mans shoes for a second.
You get called to a suspected shoplifter, you tell her to stop, but instead the car is put into drive and bumps into you. You have to make a split second decision about whether she is going to stamp on the throttle and run you over.
What do you do?

I would get out the fucking way and let her drive off. I wouldn't shout and ball at her with my gun drawn from the start scaring the shit out of her. She was accused of shoplifting ffs.

missmollygreen · 02/09/2023 08:20

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 02/09/2023 08:17

Jump to the side and shoot the tyre. What you don’t do is shoot a pregnant woman who you don’t actually know has done anything wrong.

You think shooting a tyre would stop her running him over?

Just playing devil advocate. Its very easy to say all these things they could have done.

Did they ever know she was pregnant?

VeloVixen · 02/09/2023 08:21

I mean they could have shot the car tyres if they felt they really had to stop her? 🤷‍♀️. Or just run her licence plate and go and arrest her at home later.

RudsyFarmer · 02/09/2023 08:21

It’s a crazy country with an ailing octogenarian president who falls up stairs and off bikes routinely and a population who at shoot each other regularly.

I move out the way of the car. I don't draw a gun and shoot someone

You probably wouldnt make a good police officer if you just let everyone go who threatened you

Prescottdanni123 · 02/09/2023 08:22

@Proudgypsy

I normally would agree with you in terms of journalists stirring it but in instances like these, the public should be getting riled up.

VeloVixen · 02/09/2023 08:22

He could jump out the way and shoot the tyre so he wouldn’t have been run over. It was hardly high speed.

The police should act as if every woman is pregnant. And they shouldn’t treat someone less favourably (to put it mildly) because of the colour of their skin.

ButtonSister · 02/09/2023 08:22

Proudgypsy · 02/09/2023 08:12

Absolutely not. I'm actually against guns but that's irrelevant.

I'm saying that the media have done this time and time again but every time it works so of course they'll continue. Look at the case of George Floyd where it was presented that he was an innocent black man killed because he was black.

I am certain that there are lots of details missing, as usual.

But the woman's degree of "innocence" as you call it is irrelevant. She could have been a serial killer with her latest body in her car - that does not give the police the right to summary execution.

officecake · 02/09/2023 08:23

Executed for not getting out of the car!! -and potentially being assaulted by the cops anyway. I never want to go back to America.

WinterWhiteWoes · 02/09/2023 08:23

I can’t bring myself to watch the video but by the way he was aggressively standing, with a gun pointing at her, if she had got out of the car his reaction with all that pent up anger and rage, means that yes, he probably would have slammed her to the floor. I doubt he would have calmly put his gun away to handcuff her.

Heartbreaking!

I hope justice prevails.

VeloVixen · 02/09/2023 08:24

Policing in America does seem very different. I’ve certainly seen videos because where the cops in America are chasing someone shouting “stop or I’ll shoot”. So it seems to be accepted practice to shoot someone to prevent them fleeing not just if you’re scared they’re going to hurt/kill somebody.

Hellocatshome · 02/09/2023 08:24

@missmollygreen They had her licence plate, easy enough to find her. I would argue you wouldn't make a good policeofficer if you are just going to shoot all the suspects.

Member589500 · 02/09/2023 08:24

Independent online says it was one of those increasingly common situations where a group descended on a store and started mass shoplifting.
If so there will have been heightened fear and tension.
Very sad. I don’t agree with those saying that complying with police gives an equally chance of something appalling like this happening. She should have complied but she definitely shouldn’t have died. She leaves a 6 and 3 year old behind.

Goatymum · 02/09/2023 08:24

Even if the woman had shoplifted or committed a low level crime, the punishment is not death.
The US is very scary in this regard, the gun culture is totally out of hand.

missmollygreen · 02/09/2023 08:22

She wasn’t threatening him though, was she?

Why didn’t he just shoot the tire? Even that would have been OTT though.
