Police shoot pregnant woman dead (USA)

SuddenlyOld · 02/09/2023 07:35

Ok America, since when did it become normal for police officers to point guns at pregnant women accused of shoplifting?
She didn't have a weapon or get violent. Turns out she hadn't stolen anything either.
If I was black in America I'd be scared to go out 😪😪😪
This is probably the worst thing I've seen ever.

I totally agree. What I'm trying to say is that when the media breaks these stories all they are interested in is stirring up racial hate.

I don’t agree the media is trying to stir up racial hatred. This is a news worthy event. The news helps to shape the world. Hopefully repeatedly putting the news out there can change things.

Whatever she did or didn't do. It sure as hell did not warrant being shot dead.

Put yourselves in the police mans shoes for a second.
You get called to a suspected shoplifter, you tell her to stop, but instead the car is put into drive and bumps into you. You have to make a split second decision about whether she is going to stamp on the throttle and run you over.
What do you do?

Well I wouldn't have been hammering on her door shouting in a threatening manner with a gun pointed at her in the first place.

I also hope the shop is investigated in this, I wonder if it was a malicious report because they didn't like the colour of her skin either. If it was, I hope they get dragged through the coals too.

Katjolo · 02/09/2023 08:26

America really needs to look at itself. How many more of these cases until enough is enough?

@Mummyoflittledragon

She was due in November so she was probably showing. As someone else said, police should consider the fact that any woman in a certain age range could be pregnant

Really? I wasn't aware of "guilty until proven innocent" was a thing in the USA. Disgusting comment. Even if she had shoplifted, that isn't an offense anyone should be murdered over.

Wheresthebloomingsummersunshine · 02/09/2023 08:28

If a policeman was pointing a gun at me I'd panic too, and might press the wrong pedal in my car.

The policeman should be prosecuted for both her death and the death of her unborn child.

I'd like to know what YOU would do.

Remember, your perp is a young female suspected shoplifter, not a dangerous wanted criminal.

Hellocatshome · 02/09/2023 07:50

She slowly drove forwards, there was no danger of the policeman being severely injured or killed. If they had let her get away the worst possible outcome was someone had got away with shoplifting. Surely its better to let a potential shoplifter get away than kill them.

This.

Whilst it's possible she was driving at him and we'll never know her motives.

It's was shoplifting. Take her licence plate number and follow up later.

No need to draw guns and shoot.

It scares me how happy they are to pull a trigger in America.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/09/2023 08:28

I think we forget that whilst we have our serious issues, the UK population is broadly policed by consent. It is horrific to us that such a situation should have escalated so quickly. Add guns and horrifying racism of fhe US police in to the mix it all goes bang.

As usual the racists get upset when racism is highlighted, odd that they’re never willing to proudly claim their racist views isn’t it.

gillygeey · 02/09/2023 08:28

The police should act as if every woman is pregnant. And they shouldn’t treat someone less favourably (to put it mildly) because of the colour of their skin.

This is America with race & a crazy gun culture. They treat every "suspect" as a potential gun owner who will shoot them. That's the problem.

littleblackcat27 · 02/09/2023 08:28

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there aren't riots on this -

CupOfCoffeePlease · 02/09/2023 08:29

I panic easily. Ptsd. I can imagine panicking I'd I had a gun in my face.

How is this going down in America? It seems truly unbelievable to my English ears. Does American press/public justify it?

CassiniG · 02/09/2023 08:30

The video shows Young driving forward and hitting the officer in front of her car, whose feet are seen off the ground when he fires a single shot through the windshield.

What was he supposed to do, let her run him over?

How awful. If born, the baby could have lived independently. Idk the term. As some have commented, this is a double homicide.

Good point.

They seem to go in with a "shoot or be shot" attitude which I doubt will ever change all the time carrying a gun is their legal right.

Prescottdanni123 · 02/09/2023 08:31

@missmollygreen

I'd let her go. Temporarily. I'd be able to get her registration plate number as she drove off and follow up later.

Dragonwindow · 02/09/2023 08:31

Fucking hell. Genuine question - is deescalation any part of police training in the US?

It's absolutely clear that Black lives literally don't matter - her life was worth less to him than the value of whatever shit she may or may not have stolen. And people with that mindset are GIVEN guns. Terrifying.

TheRealHousewife · 02/09/2023 08:31

That is absolutely abhorrent.

To the posters saying it’s justified as she was driving ‘at them’ when she was at most inching forward (as probably in fear, hence refusal to get out of the car as she knew she was innocent of any wronging doing coupled with the notoriety of how trigger happy American cops are, especially towards black citizens); that is akin to saying people inching forward towards environmental road blocking protesters in this country would be justified at being shot and killed.

turntgelightsdown · 02/09/2023 08:31

Unless your own life is in mortal danger, why would you kill someone else? I don't get it! If a shoplifter is trying to get away, for the sake of losing a few dollars, just let them go. The job of the police should be to protect and preserve life not to gratuitously take it all over a very minor criminal offence.

I remain incredibly thankful that UK police don't have guns.

OneTwoThreeShake · 02/09/2023 08:31

Were the police aware she was pregnant? The call was that somebody in a car with no plates had stolen alcohol from the store, so pregnancy may not automatically spring to mind. I don't know. The first officer on the scene didn't produce a gun, told her to get out of the car and she wound her window down slightly to argue.

She then drove her car at the second officer, at which point he is going to react.

Don't get me wrong, none of it warrants being shot dead. If she were a flight risk then shoot her tyres. But the image portrayed of an innocent woman just going about her business and being shot dead isn't accurate.

tara66 · 02/09/2023 08:31

So outrageous! It really is another country. They speak English but have totally different mindset. Also many are religious weirdos.

Toomanylaughs · 02/09/2023 08:32

Ducksinthebath · 02/09/2023 07:50

Why not just stop? In a country where the police are notorious for shooting black citizens first, asking questions later; where they beat then to death on the streets for the heinous ‘crime’ of being black and out at night; where any interaction with law enforcement is immediately escalated to a life or death situation, no questions asked.

Gee, I wonder why someone would be incredibly nervous about stopping.

Exactly, and anyway as if the punishment for not stopping should be death. Vile.it’s not as if she was suspected of kidnapping a child. Why not take the car registration and review the cctv 🤬 if there’s any case to answer they can then find her.

I’m sickened although not shocked and avoiding open the article because it might tip me over the edge the way in feeling this morning. I’ll read it later.
