Things that unreasonably wind you up about people at the gym

I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

Guys who hog the equipment, and take the attitude that their exercise is more important than anyone else's. This is especially bad in January. I cancelled my gym membership because of:
two guys who were taking it in turns to use two bits of equipment, so nobody else could get on either.
one guy who had booked a private trainer session and was hogging two bits of equipment, alternating between them. He was rude when I asked if I could use one of them.

I don't think this is unreasonable, mind.

ThisIsTrifficult · 27/08/2023 16:59

People dropping weights. Keep control unless you're doing a 1rm, which is unlikely!

Put the fucking weights back!

Spreading out your gym stuff - sweat towel on dumbbells, standing near a bench and not using it, water bottle somewhere else... DH is embarrassing for this despite being a thoughtful man outside of the gym. I tell him every time to take his manky sweaty stuff off things people want to use. It's like brain deserts him in these places.

Hovering nearby when I'm on something. Just ask me then fuck off.

Thankfully I CF now so these are old bugbears!

BakedTattie · 27/08/2023 16:59

The groups of young guys who stand around chatting and just looking at themselves in the mirror.

Sirzy · 27/08/2023 17:00

People who sit on the machines taking selfies after one very short “set” on it.

Floofydawg · 27/08/2023 17:00

Ahhh, yes to all those! Also the girl who talks on her phone whilst running on the treadmill. For the whole half hour.

Younger females at fitness classes with really long hair who don’t tie it up and continuously flick it around /stroke it and do that thing where they split it into two at the back and pull forward over their shoulders to the front. Just tie it up out of the way!

FinnRustle · 27/08/2023 17:04

Men People in Body Pump classes who (a) decide that they don't need to do the same routine as the one which the instructor is demonstrating, but instead swing their massive hand weights around to reps of their choice, and then (b) decide not to bother with the core track either, but instead noisily put their kit away while everyone else is still lying on their mats doing crunches. No, Steve, I don't want a reverse bird's eye view up your shorts as you step around me to get to the weights rack.

2023forme · 27/08/2023 17:05

And older guys in the fitness class who weigh about 7 stone but must use the heaviest dumbbells possible as they are men.

TinyRebel · 27/08/2023 17:05

Men making the most revolting pornified grunty sex noises as they lift their weights. I was having a PT session and some bloke comes and nicks the weights I was about to use (alternating sets) and performs at such a high volume next to me that I caught the eye of my PT and start making ridiculous over the top noises and faces in response. It was hilarious.
But then I’m a grouchy, overweight middle aged woman who DGAF what people think of me.
He did shut up though, once he realised I was taking the piss.

hermioneee · 27/08/2023 17:07

Definitely when people don't put the weights back!

I have absolutely no problem with women wearing makeup to the gym. Even if you don't care what you look like; you do care what the horrible sweaty men look like. So perhaps some of the women want to look a bit nicer too.

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/08/2023 17:07

When you're at a yoga class with your own mat and some oaf of a bloke steps on your map with his manky trainers instead of walking around it.

RandomButtons · 27/08/2023 17:08

Virtually everyone else in the gym other than those who just get on with it

WunWun · 27/08/2023 17:09

Slow walkers staring at their phone whilst walking up the narrow staircase to the changing rooms when other people are on their lunch break and trying to get to a fitness class

This is a massively unreasonable one, but women who use the smallest weight possible in a weight training class that they've been going to for about six months and put no effort in, don't sweat and generally can't be getting any benefit from it. This doesn't affect me in the slightest so I don't know why it bothers me

Singinghollybob · 27/08/2023 17:10

I hate it when people take more than one set of dumbells at a time, it's selfish as it stops other people from using them. Similar to hogging machines and alternating between them.
But I actually don't think it's an unreasonable hate.

towriteyoumustlive · 27/08/2023 17:10
  1. people who leave sweat all over the equipment and don't wipe it.
  2. two women who go for a 45 minute walk side by side on the treadmill. They have it on such a slow setting I just don't get the point of it! Why not go for a walk in the park?!?
  3. excessive grunting that I can hear over the top of my music.
  4. women that wear super skimpy gym clothes and seem to use the mirrors to see if anyone else is looking at them.
thelinkisdead · 27/08/2023 17:14

Men who make a beeline for me to explain how to do the weights I’m using pRoPeRLy. Like you might have big guns but that enormous beer gut cancels it out thanks

😂

... And men like Steve are precisely why I go to a women's only gym. 😂😂

AuntyMabelandPippin · 27/08/2023 17:20

We have a woman who stands at the front of the class, but isn't in the slightest bit interested in what she's supposed to be doing. She has the lightest weights imaginable, does a quarter of the reps the rest of us do, and has her earbuds in so she can't hear the trainer.

She said to me once, that I worked hard. I told her I was a bit competitive and liked to get as much out of it as possible. She told me she did as little as possible.

What is the point of going??

Another reason I go to a women's only gym 😂
No mansplaining about use of the equipment.

LubaLuca · 27/08/2023 17:20

The average height man who puts the bike seat on the lowest setting. Knees round his ears, like he's on a kid's bike. He wears very baggy joggers too, which also winds me up.

Sirzy · 27/08/2023 17:22

People who come up and randomly start talking to me when I’m mid set. I can’t count and chat!

TaniaBania · 27/08/2023 17:24

Men who leave their stuff draped over about 4 machines so that they can do a circuit and no one else can use them.

I would knock it on to the floor

booksandbeans · 27/08/2023 17:26

The mean girls vibe from the group who clearly know each other (& me from the classes) who are super fit gym bunnies and scorn at us sweaty, fat wifeys who are still a work in progress and not wearing crop tops and skin tight shorts.

Gnomegnomegnome · 27/08/2023 17:26

I am in my own little world at the gym so don’t really notice any of these things. I do go stupidly early though so there’s only ever around 12 other people in there. I wonder if I might be the annoying one Grin
