Things that unreasonably wind you up about people at the gym

I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 27/08/2023 17:28

People who have "their" spot in a class and woe betide anyone else who sets themselves up there

WunWun · 27/08/2023 17:29

I like to go in the same place, but would just go elsewhere if someone else was there!

80skid · 27/08/2023 17:30

Dropping weights. It's a really trend amongst a few of the men at my gym which often makes the floor rattle alarmingly. I'm dying to suggest they use lighter weights as they're obviously not capable of lifting what they're doing.
Also I'm not keen on the video/live streaming. I don't think it should be allowed in a public gym. By all means crack on in your home gym but I think it's out of order to potentially be broadcasting people who perhaps don't want their location known/sweaty Lycra clad body to be broadcast to strangers

shouldistayorshouldigoorwhat · 27/08/2023 17:30

People in Bodypump who have absolutely loads of room but choose to set their step up too close behind mine so that I have no space to do lunges.

Then don't even apologise or seem to notice when I have to move all of my stuff forward by a foot, even though it has become obvious that they've taken my space and they could just apologise and shunt their stuff back instead of watching me move all mine forwards.

Spidey66 · 27/08/2023 17:32

I had a guy in my Zumba class who I think may have been a dancer at one point. Anyway, he would add loads onto the routine, loads of complex twists and turns, in a very 'look at me!' manner. The rest of us (well me, certainly) would just do our best to keep up with the instructor. To add insult to injury he wasn't very spatially aware and would forever bump into people.

Superlegs · 27/08/2023 17:32

Not so much the gym, but sauna, grunty men that are bringing up flem or shaving. How revolting do you have to be to leave your stubble all over the sauna, there are signs saying you can’t do it, but some still do.
I also went to a yoga class and the bloke in front of me had loose shorts on, eurgh…don’t really want a view of your hairy arse and balls thanks.

Lucy304 · 27/08/2023 17:38

People who sit on machines for ages staring into space/ at their phone/ at the tv but not actually using said machine.

The three hula-hoopers at my gym that commandeer all the floor mats for a good 30 minutes whilst they stand there having a good old natter.

Grrrr...

TheOccupier · 27/08/2023 17:38

Grunting (always men).
Dropping weights (usually men).
Sitting on a resistance machine for aaaaages not doing anything except scrolling on phone (usually men).
Wearing those terrible arse-crack leggings (women).

I actually don't think any of these are unreasonable. I also get annoyed when people come to class and insist on standing in the front row but are then too unfit/uncoordinated/generally useless to follow the routine and do the class properly (i.e. the way the instructor does it). That probably is unreasonable.

Badbadbunny · 27/08/2023 17:40

The women who have to park their huge MPVs right next to the door so they don't have to walk, some even parking in the disabled bays. How about they park further away in the car park to get a bit more exercise - it's what they're there for!

Was there a glazed expression in his eyes which suggested he was replaying a complex waking daydream in which the rest of the class gathered round him - in time to the music, obvs - and begged him to take over from boring Mandy and her boring grapevines?

I stopped going to Zumba when our instructor changed and was replaced by a much younger woman who seemed to be living her own waking daydream in which she was one of the Pussycat Dolls. The class was more Pan's People era - Zoo, at a push. And does anyone really want to 'twerk it out, ladies!!' on a Wednesday morning, especially when you're old enough to worry that twerking it out might put your back out?

Nevermind31 · 27/08/2023 17:58

Those men that have a very elaborate and showy routine, which requires most equipment and ALL of the free space
Influencers who bring their tripods and constantly check how they look
Women who wear really skimpy outfits - please cover your sweaty self, not everyone likes to be covered in your sweat
Anyone flirting with their personal trainer (usually middle aged women)

latetothefisting · 27/08/2023 18:06

phones. people (usually men) doing a set of about ten reps, then staring at their phone for 5 mins, then another 10, then another 5 mins scrolling, then another 10, before repeating, tying up each station for quarter of an hour rather than the 5 minutes they actually need. I bet they go home proud of their '2 hour gym sesh' whereas they've spent max half an hour of that actually exercising.

Also weird guys just standing around with their phones pointed at people, and women on their phones (including with video) in the changing room - obviously I know they are unlikely to be filming me/others, but there have been enough examples in the news where it's happened to make me feel self conscious and I just don't get it - gym for me is in, do what you need to and out as quickly as possible, why would you want to faff around on your phone in a crowded/hot changing room still in your sweaty clothes!

Also yes to the OTT weight grunters - it is ALWAYS men.

But agree with the poster who said whatever weirdos inhabit 'normal' gyms, ones with wet facilities are 100x worse. I've seen people washing in the steam room (i.e bringing their full on soap in), SHAVING THEIR LEGS in the jacuzzi, jumping straight from sauna into the pool without showering, blow drying their pubes in the changing room, and more 🤮🤢

People are gross.

Curiouscat101 · 27/08/2023 18:17

Sorry OP but you are being unreasonable. My friend has massive insecurities about leaving the house without makeup to the point where it has affected her relationship. She has self confidence issues. I don’t think you really know what is going on in someone’s head so not nice to comment. She isn’t affecting you. Just get on with it

TaniaBania · 27/08/2023 18:20

Also shout out to the absolute dickwad in my yoga class this morning who decided to get up during savasana, stomp about the room and drop a foam block on someone's head.

LlynTegid · 27/08/2023 18:22

I'm not sure your thoughts are unreasonable OP. Especially someone making little effort when there is probably someone else who wanted to take their place but it was fully booked up.

Nor is the person with a large car reasonable in being too lazy to walk a few extra yards.

TheBeautifulTeapot · 27/08/2023 18:23

People who:

  • don't put their weights back or de-load the barbell. Just selfish and entitled.
  • sweat all over stuff and don't clean it at the end 🤢
  • use loads of bits of equipment at once so other people can't.
  • sit and chat rather than workout.

Moan over! I do love my gym 😂
There's just a few twats!

Regarding your first point. Rest between sets is how you build strength. I thought literally everyone knew this about weightlifting?

Sirzy · 27/08/2023 18:29

There is a difference between a minutes rest and sitting there playing on your phone for 10 minutes after 30 seconds of ‘exercise’ though

Blow drying their pubes 🤣 Fs

Folk taking mirror selfies in the changing room.

Agree with everything except your front row scenarioa.

Newbies belong at the front so they can actually see the instructor and copy.

I have some processing issue and can only follow a class by mirroring the instructor. I stopped going to Zumba because of the two women (one of whom was an instructor herself so didn't remotely need to see) stood front and centre in front of the instructor every week extravagantly performing every move perfectly.

Why stand at the front blocking everyone else's view of what we need to do? Just stand in a restricted view area and get on with it there (and no, I couldn't copy them because I could only see their backs so couldn't mirror them).

Still annoys me.

Renemountain · 27/08/2023 18:48

people leaving a bunch of weights on the machines when they’re finished.
Me having to stand there removing them.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 27/08/2023 18:56

About people not using heavy enough weights - this is me lately because I've got joint problems. I don't want to give up the gym completely so just doing what I can.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 27/08/2023 19:02

Agree with PPs, people who spend half their time in the gym scrolling through their phone, if you want to do that just go sit somewhere else not taking up space on the equipment. Ditto the mirror selfies, just stay at home if you want to do this and stop hogging stuff.

My gym has a designated 'selfie mirror'. 😂
