Things that unreasonably wind you up about people at the gym

I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

Men who leave their stuff draped over about 4 machines so that they can do a circuit and no one else can use them.

I just wouldn't be able to stop myself dropping their stuff on the floor if i wanted to use the machine.

Ahhh, yes to all those! Also the girl who talks on her phone whilst running on the treadmill. For the whole half hour.

To be fair, I admire her coordination, I'd be off the end if I tried that.
I pretty much only use the pool. So my bugbears are women standing in the middle of the pool chatting and making some vague attempts at stretches, they could do this at the edges.
Men who are constantly rearranging themselves in their trunks. Men who seem to spend a lot of time in goggles under the water - this is probably really unreasonable, but I can't help but feel they are ogling. Same men in the hot tub and steam room manspreading, I've stopped using the steam room, because they make me feel uncomfortable.

Tortiemiaw · 27/08/2023 21:09

Not the gym, but the pool at the gym. People swimming. I know that is completely unreasonable but I want to in be the pool on my own!! Or I may allow one other person in each of the other two lanes...

In seriousness though, those people in the slow lane (which I do go in) who are not just slow, but stationary. There was a lady in front to of me the other day, who just kept...stopping to adjust her hat, or look at her legs, or randomly float on her back for a bit.
Or those who are slow, very slow (I'm medium slow) who know I am an inch behind them at the end of the lap but don't let me go ahead. It makes life easier for us BOTH!! Bah

Re: nudity in changing rooms.

At a previous workplace we were lucky enough to have a small gym, with changing rooms.

A lady from HR would stride around naked in the tiny changing room which was always awkward when I had to go and see her later in the day. I could never look her in the eye.

My work gym buddy was explaining who I'd need to go to see about some new starter task and she described the lady by doing a sort of v shape with her fingers in front of her lower body and then we all knew who she meant.

I thought that was a bit much, for a workplace.

shouldistayorshouldigoorwhat · 27/08/2023 21:12

Sorry, to clarify, I don't think the triangle minge imagery was a bit much - more the striding around naked on her lunchbreak bit.

FerretFarago · 27/08/2023 21:13

Those battle ropes that take up all the gym!

My local council leisure centre gym is absolutely crammed with stuff (various machines and a huge area dedicated to free weights for the grunty men) leaving only a tiny space at one end to put a mat down on the floor to do some abdominal exercises. Then they installed these battle ropes next to the tiny floor space, and one would be doing one’s abdominal crunches then one of the gym trainers would demonstrate these bloody ropes whack whack whack on the floor right next to your head - ducking annoying!

Floofydawg · 27/08/2023 21:13

@Tortiemiaw there's a whole other thread's worth for unreasonable swimmers. I swim a lot as well.

WunWun · 27/08/2023 21:14

Ah, yeah. I have to admit, if someone from my team is in there I do cover up more. I'm a hypocrite!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 27/08/2023 21:16

Our local leisure centre gym seems a magnet for… characters. But mainly people hogging equipment. I went and got a bench and this man who had been on the bike since I’d arrived at the gym 15 minutes prior ran over and was like “I was using that” ok but… you were not

FerretFarago · 27/08/2023 21:17

The swimming pool has fast, medium and slow lanes but they should add in a “extremely slow lane”, for those who adjust their cap, wrist key bands and caps at the end of every lap or who are just there to chat with their pals. I’m just too slow for the medium lane but the antics of the slow lane swimmers drives me mad!

Billy and Betty Butterfly who can't possible wait 5 minutes for the class in 'their' lane to end so hog the slow lane until it's time for their special show off display. Arghhhhhhh.

YES! Are you me??

Floofydawg · 27/08/2023 21:19

People who swim butterfly can fuck right off.

Hahahahahahaha!!!! Oh god yes

Catastrophejane · 27/08/2023 21:20

Men in yoga classes - they always do the ujayyi breath so fucking loudly.

so basically men breathing annoys me! 😂

PlipPlopChoo · 27/08/2023 21:24

People who superset weights and machines at peak times
People who spend most of the time messaging on their phone and not using the equipment they are sat on

But the morons who do their dumbbell exercises standing right next in front of the rack of weights boils my piss the most. Stand a metre or two back and let us other members get and return weights as necessary. Fucking pillocks!

fiorentina · 27/08/2023 21:26

People sat on a bench/machine for ages on their phone. Just step away and let someone else use it!
Those who don’t clean their sweat off a machine.
People who leave rubbish around, so rude.

roundtable · 27/08/2023 21:29

I dislike screamers and loud chatters. Thankfully both have gone from our gym.

I will full confess to grunting and dropping weights though - I'm a female who does Olympic weightlifting. I like lifting heavy, sorry!

Floofydawg · 27/08/2023 21:29

@Tortiemiaw get in the medium lane. I'm the slow end of medium, but I refuse to be stuck with people who are way slower than me.

FerretFarago · 27/08/2023 21:31

There’s one slow lane lady who adjusts their goggles at the end of every lap but she’s doing breast stroke keeping her head out of the water like a tortoise, why wear them at all!

Mummysatthebodyshop · 27/08/2023 21:33

@latetothefisting phones. people (usually men) doing a set of about ten reps, then staring at their phone for 5 mins, then another 10, then another 5 mins scrolling, then another 10, before repeating, tying up each station for quarter of an hour rather than the 5 minutes they actually need. I bet they go home proud of their '2 hour gym sesh' whereas they've spent max half an hour of that actually exercising.

that is how strength training is done and muscle is built. It's nothing like cardio.

dontletsaskforthemoon · 27/08/2023 21:36

Oh god. I've literally just re-joined a gym after 20 years of doing exercise at home and I'm wondering whether I should cancel! 😱all these examples are anxiety inducing and I'm now remembering why I stopped going to the gym!! (Tbf I stopped going cos I had kids and couldn't afford the time or money)

The sweaty equipment, the grunty men, the selfish machine huggers, ladies flouncing around naked in the changing rooms and using the hair dryer for their pubes 😑- i remember all these very well but now on top of that you're telling me there are mirrors in the changing rooms specifically for selfies? 😭Wtf? And people with tripods to record their sessions?! Wtf?!

What on earth have I done?!?!

nutmegnook · 27/08/2023 21:38

People who take selfies in the mirror

Floofydawg · 27/08/2023 21:42

@dontletsaskforthemoon for all my complaints I still bloody love my gym.

In the swimming pool:

-Aqua walkers
-snorkelling in the pool while lane swimming
