I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

Our leg spreader (not official term) machines are in the corner, next to them is boxing bag. The boxing bag isn't the most popular thing, until I plan on going to said machine, then of course some bloke heads over to show off punching it. It pisses me off as it happens quire a bit.

Those scrunch up the bum shorts. And when there is a bit of a sweat going, it is NOT a good look. Where do these women think the sweat is going to go if not straight into the wedgie bit.

The just standing in front of the mirror pulling their muscles. Why?

HennyPenny1234 · 27/08/2023 19:06

I don't go to the gym anymore, I prefer to exercise outside now

However, the thing that I remember annoying me was people hanging around the machines chatting instead of actually bloody using them

Bugger off!

This always reminds me of chimps at the zoo or like 3 stages back in evolution. Really unnatractive and men who had gym selfies in their dating profiles used to put me off because you could just tell they spent all their time preening!

People who judge other people at the gym.

xyz111 · 27/08/2023 19:21

Anyone who thinks the gym is a bloody fashion show 🤦🏻‍♀️

Spidey66 · 27/08/2023 19:31

i forgot the women who wander round in the nude in the changing rooms. I’m not on about the ones who go from the shower to the lockers..the ones who spend ages chatting away in the buff. In my last gym there was one who I swear would have a shower then do her hair and make up and chatting to people without anything on. I understand people wanting to dry their hair before getting dressed but tbh I’d put a towel round me. This particular one, I went in once for a swim, she was standing at the mirror in her birthday suit. I went, got changed, had a swim and shower, got dressed then went to brush& dry hair so 45 mins. Guess who was still as naked as the day she was born?

ok I know I have issues and am very modest (I’m convent educated!) but still!

Simonjt · 27/08/2023 19:35

I have to admit I’m guilty of the gym mirror selfie, our gym has a specific mirror for this in the changing room (placed so you don’t snap anyone in the nude).

My biggest annoyance is people who just don’t put things away or don’t clean equipment, they’re both really simple basic things and good manners.

Luckily the gym I use at the minute is very basic and absolutely no frills, so it does mean you don’t really get anyone half arsing or posing on machines.

Regarding your first point. Rest between sets is how you build strength. I thought literally everyone knew this about weightlifting?

https://www.bodybuilding.com/content/how-long-should-you-rest-between-sets.html#:~:text=To%20increase%20strength%20and%20power,seconds%20or%20less%20between%20sets.

no need to be condescending. obviously yes you should rest between sets. The fact I described them as sets makes a resting period self-evident, otherwise they wouldn't be sets, would they? They would just be multiple reps without a break 🙄

but I thought EVERYONE knew common gym etiquette (particularly when busy) is to not spend 5 x the active period "resting". e.g. if 10 reps takes a minute or so, 5 mins rest per set is therefore excessive.
even that article you linked to gave the majority of rest time as b/w 30 secs to 2 and a half minutes.

Plus my point was strangely nobody spends as long 'resting' if they don't have a phone to stare at, they get bored after 30 secs of staring into the distance and start again. So it's obviously not necessary.

If you want to spend that long resting either:
-do your weights at home
-go at a quiet period
-get off the machine to rest
-or at the very least alternate with someone else so 2 of you use the machine for the same amount of time.

lots of options that don't involve being a dick and allow others to also use the facilities.

Really? I think it's a shame that people are so self conscious in this country. I don't walk about from here to there in the nude because no one at my gym does that and it would look too attention seeking, but I'd like to be able to. I do put my towel on the hooks outside the showers and don't cover up when coming out of the cubicle to get it (I'm definitely not a supermodel, I have csection overhang).

I feel particularly sorry for women who stand by the locker/bench huddled under a towel desperately trying not to show an inch too much flesh. I don't judge them at all, I'm sure it's to do with body image or other self esteem issues and I feel for them. I just find it quite sad.

If everyone did it it would become the norm and everyone would realise that no one's perfect!

Elevatemassivesalad · 27/08/2023 19:40

Full gym gear and full face makeup. Posing for insta and scowling when you accidentally get in their photo shot.

But they don't actually do any exercise.

It's SO confusing and the gym owner thinks it's a sign of a new mental health illness. Because SO many people are completely detached from their own reality. (Yet he's happy to take their money!)

Absolutely! This thread is quite sad!

People who come and take weight plates off the squat rack I’m using whilst I’m mid set - happy for you to have them but ask when I’ve finished my set!

People who leave the plates on bars after they are finished

Groups of late teens standing around snap chatting and trying to ego lift to impress each other

Oh god, people like you two are the reason people had to resort to writing 'lighthearted' in thread titles.

You'll be fine, don't be sad.

It's just some words on a screen.

We have a woman who stands at the front of the class, but isn't in the slightest bit interested in what she's supposed to be doing. She has the lightest weights imaginable, does a quarter of the reps the rest of us do, and has her earbuds in so she can't hear the trainer.

She said to me once, that I worked hard. I told her I was a bit competitive and liked to get as much out of it as possible. She told me she did as little as possible.

What is the point of going??

Maybe it helps her depression, gets her out the house, has an injury?

come to Germany. They do whatever they need, with or without clothes. I've been sitting on the bench tying my shoes and then next thing is that a buck naked woman has her left leg up and is rubbing in her body lotion. I'm no prude but sometimes it does get a bit much

ZittiEBuoni · 27/08/2023 19:52

At DH's gym there is a man who ignores the running machines and just runs up and down the side of the main room. DH is enraged by this but I find it hilarious.

Richmondgal · 27/08/2023 19:53

People who go on a treadmill and walk and look at their phone. There were four of those jokers in a row yesterday. What the hell is the point
groups if buddies using one bit of kit spend time talking not using it
people on a bit of kit for ages spending most time looking at a phone
saw one guy set up a camera on a bit of kit next to the kit he was using to video himself as if anyone would be interested

TellySavalashairbrush · 27/08/2023 19:56

Men who attend bums & tums classes.

people who sit on the machines chatting to the people they are with rather than using them to exercise.

men who make loud grunting noises and sweat like Barry White.

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/08/2023 17:07

When you're at a yoga class with your own mat and some oaf of a bloke steps on your map with his manky trainers instead of walking around it.

Someone did this to me recently and left a trainer print on my lovely expensive mat. I was absolutely MURDEROUS

BeMoreBarbie · 27/08/2023 19:57

Flexing in front of the mirrors. Just awkward.

The absolute psychopaths who don't have headphones when training. It bugs me because it means they can hear my heavy breathing while I smash the cardio and I'm embarrassed. Do they not need the motivation?? Gym music always sucks.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 27/08/2023 20:00

My gym has nice, clean locker/changing rooms so why do so many people take all their stuff into the gym in huge bags and park them between machines or all over the floor?
I roll my eyes at grunty-gasping blokes.
Also Performative Gym-guys, who like doing weird lunging walks with weights up and down the aisles, or walking very slowly backwards on the treadmills.
Also: you can do fairly basic stretches at home, don't take up all the floor showing off how long you can hold a plank.
I am so pleased that photography is banned where I go.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/08/2023 20:05

Functional Fitness classes.

Ear bleeding volume of music.

Men throwing weights around, dangling off the machines and clanging plates, dragging equipment they like the look of into the theoretical FF area (theoretical because half don't stay in it), ropes getting slapped around directly where you have to walk to leave the place, running up and down across the changing room doors so anybody coming out could get the door slammed straight into them, grunting, lots of unwashed body smells, harassing you in the middle of your sets because they want to keep their heart rate up by forcing you off the machines, falling out of handstand pushups across you because they started around 18 inches away from your station...

ZolaBudd · 27/08/2023 20:06

Nevermind31 · 27/08/2023 17:58

Those men that have a very elaborate and showy routine, which requires most equipment and ALL of the free space
Influencers who bring their tripods and constantly check how they look
Women who wear really skimpy outfits - please cover your sweaty self, not everyone likes to be covered in your sweat
Anyone flirting with their personal trainer (usually middle aged women)

Ageist and sexist

shame on you

neonjumper · 27/08/2023 20:07

FinnRustle · 27/08/2023 17:04

Men People in Body Pump classes who (a) decide that they don't need to do the same routine as the one which the instructor is demonstrating, but instead swing their massive hand weights around to reps of their choice, and then (b) decide not to bother with the core track either, but instead noisily put their kit away while everyone else is still lying on their mats doing crunches. No, Steve, I don't want a reverse bird's eye view up your shorts as you step around me to get to the weights rack.

This is a bit unfair about body pump . I have frozen shoulder at the moment and can't do a clean and press or overhead triceps ... I have to do a lower body alternative ( the instructors know this and have recommended this ) ... but I am good at keeping in time with the reps !

megletthesecond · 27/08/2023 20:09

People who wipe their noses on their fingers then continue using equipment.
Women who don't wear sports bras. It looks so uncomfortable.
Anyone who sets up a tripod for their phone to film their workout.
