Things that unreasonably wind you up about people at the gym

I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

I genuinely don’t notice anyone at the gym but the other day a lady caught my eye in the mirror on the machine next to me. She was walking on the running machine but also shadow boxing at the same time 🤣🤣. Each to their own I guess.

TheAloe · 29/08/2023 15:57

Reading this thread and thinking thank fuck my gym has a ladies only section.

Mummysatthebodyshop · 30/08/2023 17:58

f they are actually running, fine. The ones who piss me off are the ones who walk, slowly, for an hour or so. Why go to the gym just to walk? You could just walk to the shops, or round the park (and yes I know you can also run to the shops and around the park, and I do, but if I’m running on the treadmill I’m usually doing speedwork or something where the ability to monitor my speed and time is useful, or just doing a quick 10min warm up before doing weights. Not hogging the treadmill for an hour to go for a walk'

It's usually done on an incline for low impact cardio. I'm sure it can get your heart rate up a lot higher than a walk around the park.

I walk, I work harder than a walk round the shops. I would love to run but it triggers plantar fasciitis. I have my own treadmill, so it's not often I'm annoying people, but a bit surprised that it does annoy others!

Mypuppywontsleep · 30/08/2023 22:07

I cancelled one gym membership because when I was doing Pilates class men were dropping weights on the floor relentlessly the entire time and the whole floor shook. It’s not relaxing or good for concentrating. Signs not to do it, they ignored them

I have an issue with swimmers who swim very fast in the slow lane when there are OTHER lanes for different speeds and I am spending all my time swimming feeling under pressure because they are constantly trying to overtake me or just swimming up my arse

XenoBitch · 30/08/2023 22:26

People (usually women) who break out a book and spend an absolute age on weight machines... and it is on the lowest possible weight too. I just wonder what the point is.

I used to use treadmills for walking (on an incline). I could tune out everyone else by listening to music or an audiobook. I can't do that when walking out in the outside world. I have also never been a runner.

I no longer go to a gym, after hearing staff comment and laugh about how red I was when working out. Commenting loudly on other people is the ultimate shitty thing to do IMO.

ZolaBudd · 31/08/2023 08:23

A BOOK?

crazybeelady · 31/08/2023 09:27

People that come in to a busy class after it has started and jam themselves into places where there is not enough room encroaching on my space and meaning I can’t enjoy my workout

Cosyblankets · 31/08/2023 09:35

Floofydawg · 29/08/2023 09:27

Bloke in pool this morning was getting v would up about me swimming faster than him. Was almost killing himself trying to get past me. Was quite funny.

He was probably training
Don't flatter yourself

Christ this makes me glad to exercise at home/outside and not have been to a gym since I was at school. It sounds like gyms are mostly populated by inconsiderate arseholes and the rest by women who hate other women just for existing. None of that in my living room!

I just go in headphones on, do my program, then leave. I don't really notice anyone else.
All these people in the gym taking so much notice of everyone else! Just go and do your exercise.

What? Even if they’re on kit you want to use?

It’s the duration honestly, usually a hour plus. And there aren’t that many treadmills in the gym. I’d find somebody doing their 20k long slow weekend run on the gym treadmill annoying too.

Flipbopboop · 01/09/2023 05:11

I really dislike the men doing performative exercises especially with the grunting. I was on a weight machine and a man sat on the one next to me. In less than the time I had done 30 reps, he was loudly counting and grunting "98/99/100". It did make me laugh.

I hate it when people just sit there on their phones and occasionally do one rep. I have asked people whether they've finished if they've been on for a long time. I have a yoga class and it's often disrupted by people dropping weights.

In regard to others asking why someone is walking slowly on a treadmill, that could be me. I walk slowly / don't run on a treadmill because I have severe chronic pain and Fibromyalgia. I like the control of the treadmill and this is also the exercise regime recommended by my physio. It hurts to even get out of bed so I'm proud of myself for even getting to the gym. It does make me eye roll when they are men far larger than me making grunting noises on weight machines when I'm lifting more than they are. I don't see the point. Just exercise and move on.

But they have just as much right to use that kit as you!

They're not usually on it forever. I tend to do something else from my program and then come back to it.
There's a lot of comments on here about people on phones or resting. The correct amount of rest is extremely important at the gym. When i first started i was amazed at the amount of people seemingly stood around doing nothing. There's a reason for it.
But unless someone is actually in my way i don't really notice them. I just mind my own business

Floofydawg · 01/09/2023 07:48

Since I'm going to spin this morning I'll add another - people talking to their mate all the way through the class so you can't hear the instruction.

People who don't put kettlebells, medicine balls, etc back on the racks with the weight showing so you have to sort through them to get the one you want.

This is SO rude. It drives me mad when people chat through the warm up and cool down. My spin classes are however too loud to chat through once they get going.

+1 and also people who just chuck them back on the racks wherever so it takes ages to find a pair (and the kettlebells don't sit neatly so it's harder to put yours away when you've finished).

CruCru · 01/09/2023 12:19

Do any of you remember that influencer who took a photo of some other woman at the gym and then posted it to make fun of her? That was awful.

Florabundance · 01/09/2023 14:11

...which is precisely why I stopped going to 'classes' at the gym, got tired of explaining to the class teacher in every case. that I hadn't done** that particular activity before and would need some guidance only to be told "just follow me steps and you'll soon get the hang of it" so I would and the whole thing would descend into ritual humiliation.

Beyond the first minute of the warm up I simply don't have the breath to talk to anyone (other than mutter b!Tch when she turns my resistance up)
