To think DH flashing car lights in these circumstances isn't the norm?

DH has a strange habit where if he drives past a car which is the same colour and model as ours he flashes his lights at them - the "car twin".

We have recently got a new car and it seems quite common and this habit is driving me a bit mad - mainly because he insists everyone does it and people will know why he's doing it. I've told him no one else does it and he's confusing other drivers.

Does anyone else do this?

Never heard of this and it sounds like a bad idea.

GeraldTheGoodMouse · 14/08/2023 20:50

That is weird for an ordinary car driver.

Quite common for rare/classic car drivers.

5128gap · 14/08/2023 20:51

A lot of people do it but usually when they have cool or iconic cars like minis, beetles, camper vans etc. I don't think audi drivers do it.

GorillaInBikini · 14/08/2023 20:51

What kind of car is it? If someone else with an identical Peugeot did it I'd assume I had a light out, or they were trying to let someone out.

Sparkletastic · 14/08/2023 20:52

I think you can potentially get points for doing this. Confuses other drivers and incorrect use of lights. He should pack it in.

KenIsAnAccessory · 14/08/2023 20:52

Oh that's odd. I drive a c max and if someone did that I'd be pulling over to see what was wrong with my car 🤣

Doggymummar · 14/08/2023 20:52

Beetle drivers do this, not ford focus drivers!

Ace56 · 14/08/2023 20:52

I would be confused if someone did this to me. Unless you have a very rare car this definitely isn’t the norm!

Testina · 14/08/2023 20:53

Camper vans do the wave more than flashing.
He’s only going to confuse people - and it’s breaking the Highway Code too.
Plus if it’s not an unusual car, it’s just pointless!

HelloSquire · 14/08/2023 20:53

Doggymummar · 14/08/2023 20:52

Beetle drivers do this, not ford focus drivers!

MG drivers too
It's for classic cars

GasPanic · 14/08/2023 20:53

No this is nuts.

There are enough difficulties interpreting flashing lights without adding completely crap ones like this. AFAIK they can mean :

i) You come through (letting someone through in a blocked area).

ii) Thanks (after moving through a blocked area).

iii) There is a speed camera ahead (on the open road).

iv) There is something wrong with your car (brake light out etc).

RoyKentFanclub · 14/08/2023 20:54

I’d also assume there was some sort of problem. He needs to stop doing this

UndercoverCop · 14/08/2023 20:54

This used to happen to me when I had a Beetle! I thought I was doing something/car had something hanging off it until my uncle (a vespa enthusiast) told me it's common practice with certain car makes, but not your bog standard astra etc

CatchHimDerry · 14/08/2023 20:54

@GasPanic agreed

Weird to do this

eurochick · 14/08/2023 20:55

It would make me think I had my full beams on by mistake or a bulb out or something. This is definitely not something everyone does. He needs to stop it.

PuffingPuffin · 14/08/2023 20:55

classic mini, maybe. Ford fiesta, no.

panko · 14/08/2023 20:57

As pp have said this is for classic cars or maybe lamboghini

tommika · 14/08/2023 20:57

Like others have said, the “I’ve got the same car as you” custom is in the realms of unusual vehicles such as classic cars & campers. Not average ones

The official Highway Code use for flashing lights is to alert that you are there
The general road use is to warn of something wrong such as danger, speed cameras, your lights are not on etc

msbevvy · 14/08/2023 20:57

That would confuse the hell out of me. I could well end up being distracted by checking if my headlights were defective or the boot was open.

EvilElsa · 14/08/2023 20:59

I wouldn't say that's common unless you have something unusual or vintage.
DH is a biker and they all nod at each other on passing.

Perfectweatherforducks · 14/08/2023 20:59

We have a rare(ish) car and whenever we pass another one, the done thing is to wave. But it's definitely not the norm with other cars! This would really annoy me! Has anyone ever flashed him back?? Or even flashed him first?

BeeLievable · 14/08/2023 20:59

It's a Volkswagen ID3.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/08/2023 20:59

He's an idiot.

Wheredidtheselotapego · 14/08/2023 21:00

This would really confuse me and stress me out

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 14/08/2023 21:00

Anyone who flashes their lights at me for any reason gets called a cunt by me. Being blinded isn't enjoyable, in fact it's dangerous, and it serves absolutely no purpose.
