To think DH flashing car lights in these circumstances isn't the norm?

DH has a strange habit where if he drives past a car which is the same colour and model as ours he flashes his lights at them - the "car twin".

We have recently got a new car and it seems quite common and this habit is driving me a bit mad - mainly because he insists everyone does it and people will know why he's doing it. I've told him no one else does it and he's confusing other drivers.

Does anyone else do this?

I thought it was just truckers who did that!

HennyPenny1234 · 14/08/2023 22:47

Just seen that the car is an ID3

This is weird

If it was a classic car then fair enough. I'd imagine most people will think what the hell is wrong with this bloke, why is he flashing me?

Some drivers could take it as a challenge and come after him. Could be very dangerous if it happened just before a red light.

NutellaNut · 14/08/2023 23:24

I wouldn’t have a clue if someone had flashed me for this reason. I’d think they were warning me about some hazard ahead, that I had my headlights on, or possibly something wrong with my car. I’d be quite worried.

ichundich · 14/08/2023 23:32

Hopefully the car he drives is not a black / dark grey Volvo, Range Rover or Tesla 😅!

Runnerinthenight · 14/08/2023 23:34

Weird!! People will think there's a speed camera and he looks like a dick when there isn't one!

Nobody does that!

Friggingfrog · 14/08/2023 23:35

My friend used to have a tiny classic mini and this was a thing for those cars. If someone flashed at my punto I would think there was a speed camera van nearby

neilyoungismyhero · 14/08/2023 23:39

A very handsome young man drove past me whilst I was sat in my parked car the other week and gave me a beaming smile and a wink! I laughed and gave a little wave back..we had the same model..I'm early 70s and he must have been in his 20s.
Some people do this shit but not many..I.liked it though I have to say..

Hawkins009 · 14/08/2023 23:40

I've only known it when it's to do with mobile speed cameras

Iforgotmyusernameagainandagain · 14/08/2023 23:49

You might want to mention to him that this is what straight men looking for gay hook ups do near cottaging points. I know because I used to live near one, couldn't understand all the headlight flashing, then one day it clicked. They'd drive up and down the road, flashing headlights. When one flashed back they'd park up and head into the mens public toilets. Ugh.

NannyGythaOgg · 14/08/2023 23:50

We used to do it in the 1970s but that was because we drove a Wartburg Knight Estate and there were only a couple of thousand in the whole country, so seeing another one was pretty rare.

Also up until sometime around then, AA membership came with a radiator grill badge - and fellow AA members would flash headlights.

That's 'Automobile Association' not 'Alcoholics Anonymous'

Iforgotmyusernameagainandagain · 14/08/2023 23:51

Even worse, I've just googled and if your car's stationery it can mean you're up for dogging :o

SgtPercyTwentyman · 14/08/2023 23:53

It was common practice back in the 60s but I haven't heard of anyone doing it in years (& even back then it tended only to be drivers with unusual makes, models or colour schemes).

Defender90 · 14/08/2023 23:53

We did it when we had a previous and unusual car but yeah for a normal car that's weird.

OrwellianTimes · 14/08/2023 23:54

He’s a dangerous driver.

Qilin · 14/08/2023 23:56

5128gap · 14/08/2023 20:51

A lot of people do it but usually when they have cool or iconic cars like minis, beetles, camper vans etc. I don't think audi drivers do it.

Yes, normal for some cars but not really a thing for other makes/models.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 14/08/2023 23:57

Some people do the exact opposite, though. I was recently behind somebody driving through a city in the middle of the night with no lights on at all - me flashing repeatedly, other drivers flashing repeatedly too; no response at all.

Either totally oblivious, puzzled because my car was totally different from theirs or thinking I was up for a bit of dogging?!

If they didn't want other members of the public warning them, maybe they'd prefer to be pulled over by a police car and be 'awarded' some lovely points?!

maybebalancing · 14/08/2023 23:59

We have done this with classic cars we own.

Our in production Fords no 🤣

KajsaKavat · 14/08/2023 23:59

Flash and wave is a thing yes. I’ve owned two cars where this was done religiously.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/08/2023 23:59

The last time I flashed my lights it was misinterpreted. A taxi pulled out in front of me, not brilliantly, but not awfully either. He hadn't turned his lights on at the dark end of twighlight so about 30s later when he still hadn't realised and put them on I gave a brief flash. He thought I was being uppity about pulling out and pulled into a side road out of the way. As I drove past, DS managed to wave his hands at him in a way sufficient to communicate lights and he turned them on. DLRs can be a blooming nuisence as it gets dark as people forget the back end isn't lit!

No it's not normal for owners of regular vehicles to flash each other. Although I did used to say to myself "hello model type" each time I saw one on the roads. I'd forgotten that. Many of them fell victim to the scrappage scheme!

Wingedharpy · 15/08/2023 00:02

I have been known to "flash" my windscreen wipers at other drivers to say thanks - but that's because I got confused with left and right, other than that, no.

augustusglupe · 15/08/2023 00:05

We’ve got a Defender. DH, who drives it the most, always waves to other ones.
Recently he was behind me in it at a roundabout and all of a sudden this couple swing round right in front of me waving like mad. Took me a second to realise they were waving at DH behind 🥴😄

Walesagogo · 15/08/2023 00:20

Bus drivers do it! 😆 If someone does that to me then I think I've got my fog lights on.

Time40 · 15/08/2023 00:42

Years ago, my friend had a Citroen 2CV, and she used to make a weird hand signal to other 2CVs - pressing her hand on the windscreen with the fingers open. I imagine that's died out, as there are hardly any around any more.

Alloveragain3 · 15/08/2023 01:03

This is actually really funny.

If my "car twin" did this to me I'd assume I had a front light out or there were police / a crash up ahead.

He needs to stop!
