To think DH flashing car lights in these circumstances isn't the norm?

DH has a strange habit where if he drives past a car which is the same colour and model as ours he flashes his lights at them - the "car twin".

We have recently got a new car and it seems quite common and this habit is driving me a bit mad - mainly because he insists everyone does it and people will know why he's doing it. I've told him no one else does it and he's confusing other drivers.

Does anyone else do this?

We have a landrover d2. They don't tend to flash though unless light bars are on. Instead it's a nod or casual hand raise. Especially if it's been modded up with lift kit or cb aerial.

We recently hired a motor home for 2 weeks. The enthusiastic wave sometimes had me in stitches.

I drive a ds3 as my daily...absolutely no way would I be waving to fellow ds3 drivers. They'd likely think they had an issue with their car.

If, as he insists, everyone does it, then tell him to let the other cars do it first for a while. When he never gets flashed he might realize no one does it?

Bellaboo01 · 15/08/2023 08:45

Never heard of this. It sounds cringey.

Tinkerbyebye · 15/08/2023 08:56

It’s common I think for classic cars, but not normal ones. What he is doing is in fact illegal and I would question if he is actually in control of the car as he appears to be looking for cars like his rather than keeping his eye on the road!

It's not normal to flash your lights at an ordinary car, even if it is the same as the one you are driving.

It was normal to acknowledge an older/classic car with a hand gesture (a polite one) some years ago, and is still done by those that are aware. Flashing lights, beeping horns, no way.

gabsdot45 · 15/08/2023 09:23

When I got my first Nissan leaf (EV) about 10 years ago if I met another one we would flash each other and wave because they were very rare then.
So I suppose it depends on what kind of car your DH has.

Thing is your ability to communicate with other drivers is pretty limited.

There is a wave, beep, fist shake, flash lights and that is about it.

Flash lights is pretty ambiguous but most people can figure out what it means depending on context (whether you are in a built up area or on open road).

But if everyone starts flashing people because their favourite song comes on the radio or because they are wearing their best green pants, no one can figure out what it means anymore and it becomes totally worthless as a method to communicate.

OrigamiOwls · 15/08/2023 09:52

For classic cars, yes. I used to have a Morris and we would all wave at each other.
For my current runaround,no. I'd be very confused, and worried that there was an obstacle coming up that he was trying to warn me of.

Cardboardcup · 15/08/2023 10:12

Never heard of this. We have a campervan and they always flash each other. Never heard of it otherwise though 🤷

10HailMarys · 15/08/2023 10:31

I’d find this irritating even if I had a classic car

Beachhutgirl · 15/08/2023 10:51

I have a car in a slightly unusual colour, and I used to smile at maybe wave if I pulled up alongside another one.

I've stopped doing it since I (twice!) found myself grinning at another car driver for no apparent reason, having forgotten that I was driving my Mum's car at the time.

zingally · 15/08/2023 10:52

I've had a license for 20 years and have never seen this. If someone coming towards me flashed, I'd assume there was something further up the road that I needed to be aware of - like a speed trap van, or a hazard of some sort.
The fact they were also driving a dark blue corsa wouldn't cross my mind!

megletthesecond · 15/08/2023 10:55

Dangerous and stupid.

TwoShades1 · 15/08/2023 10:56

It’s more done by people with classic/unique/special cars than just normal everyday cars. So the other driver probably assumes he’s flashing them for some other reason and is confused or angry as they don’t know what it is!

LadyFlumpalot · 15/08/2023 20:18

Us Subaru drivers usually wave at each other and the more enthusiastic ones might flash lights, but Subaru ownership is more like a cult than owning a regular car!
