My son just called me mummy

He’s 5. He’s non verbal with Autism and has not shown any real inclination to talk.

This last 2/3 weeks he’s started ‘demanding’ food which is brilliant, but tiday he saw me and shouted ‘mummy!’.

I can’t believe it. I could cry ❤️

Aw OP this is so lovely!

My autistic son was a late talker too. He was non verbal until 4 then called me "money" from the ages of 4-5 and has only now (age 5.5) started calling me "mummy"

Once upon a time we thought he'd never speak. Nowadays we pray for 5 minutes peace 😁

It started with single words, then demands for certain things, then echolalia / scripting and now I'd say he's 80% verbal (scripting still makes up about 20% of his speech but its always in context)

Well done to your little boy ❤️

This is so interesting - I feel like this is how he’s developing too.

One of his favourite books is ‘Not Now Bernard’ and there’s a bit where ‘mum’ says go to bed and he repeats this to us if he’s ready to go up early so it sounds like this is a gateway to more functional language.

As I said before I just want him to be able to communicate when I’m not here.

Wonderful news. My son had limited speech until around 6. He's 8 now and uses all of the words every singe day. It's good to be reminded this is a positive Wink

So, so lovely!!!! You must be over the moon.

My child has ASD, is verbal, but only said “I love you” to me for the first time around age 7 - best feeling ever.

Greenfishy · 10/08/2023 22:23

That’s amazing 🤩❤️🥰

CoffeeLover90 · 10/08/2023 22:26

It's so heartwarming. I bet your on cloud 9 and I'm so happy for you.
It's been a year since my little boy said mammy, he's ASD too, speech is coming on great, still a lot of echoing but much improvement.
I've been called mammy many times since but I never tire from hearing it.
I bet he comes on leaps and bounds now, well done little lad 💙

My DS is 2.5 and is non verbal and I have been told to expect an asd diagnosis in the near future. At 2.5 I know there’s plenty of time but it’s still tough not having heard his little voice yet. Your post gives me hope. It really made me smile⭐️
