He’s 5. He’s non verbal with Autism and has not shown any real inclination to talk.

This last 2/3 weeks he’s started ‘demanding’ food which is brilliant, but tiday he saw me and shouted ‘mummy!’.

I can’t believe it. I could cry ❤️

That’s very special. Hurrah!

Mostlyoblivious · 10/08/2023 22:58

💕💕💕

How lovely! This has really made me smile ❤️

I have a non verbal 3.5 year old with autism and it’s given me hope x

So pleased for you! My dd was 4 before she said mama, she's fully verbal and at university now. Once they master a few words there's every chance they will learn in full. (Apparently Einstein was 5 when he started talking!)

momonpurpose · 10/08/2023 23:02

So happy for you and your son ❤️

gogomoto · 10/08/2023 23:02

Asd doesn't go away but if they get speech it can make such a huge difference to their lives.

Mrshawshouse · 10/08/2023 23:08

I could cry too!! ❤

Jumbojade · 10/08/2023 23:08

It’s so lovely to read a thread like this, instead of the moaning on many of the other ones. It’s my thread of the week! Absolutely delighted for you both @Merryoldgoat 😁

UrsulaBelle · 10/08/2023 23:11

I love to hear about these happy milestones. How wonderful to hear him talking.

My 23 yo DS with ASD can cut his own pizza up at long last! 😂

Riv · 10/08/2023 23:12

I’ve just found your post and I’m typing with tears. I know just how amazing this is. I’m so happy for you! What a huge step for him!
Well done, I know how hard you have worked for this. He knows just how important you are to him and how hard you work. Maybe not in those clear terms but you are obviously very important to him. (Maybe second to food - But a close second 🤣🤣)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2023 23:16

That's wonderful!!! 💖💖💖💖

Merryoldgoat · 10/08/2023 23:16

You are honestly all so lovely.

@Riv I think I’m third after food and being naked 🤣

He was trying to sing 12 Days of Christmas at bedtime - incomprehensible until we got to ‘FIVE MOLDY WINGS’

That made me tear up with joy. Our son was the same. Didn't say Mummy until his baby sister did so about age 4-5. He couldn't answer even the most basic questions. Everything was echolalia. Now he is 10 and he is beyond what we could have ever have dreamt. Even sharp verbally, makes jokes, chats loads. Tonight had a video call with his Papa who is abroad. I cried as I remember the doctor saying to me one day he will be able to talk on the phone and I just didn't believe her. Well she was right and I was so wrong. He's in mainstream, keeping up with the class. Has things he is hugely anxious over but we are so proud of him. I'll worry about him until the day I drop dead. But he's come so much further than we could have dared to hope. I wish your son every success. I hope the other poster gets to hear her son soon too.
