My son just called me mummy

He’s 5. He’s non verbal with Autism and has not shown any real inclination to talk.

This last 2/3 weeks he’s started ‘demanding’ food which is brilliant, but tiday he saw me and shouted ‘mummy!’.

I can’t believe it. I could cry ❤️

Really Lovely OP❤. May you have more great moments like those.

What lovely news, I’m very pleased for you both.

Today I had a chat to a Mum and her DD in the shop I volunteer in. The little girl had autism and I chatted to them both for quite a while. As we parted the little girl suddenly threw her arms round me and gave me a big hug, her Mum was so apologetic I said it was fine and she said the little girl hardly ever did this to anyone, I felt extremely privileged. It was a very lovely moment.

He’s so precious.

He has lots of echolalia and repeats sone songs and books but now he will say what song he wants me to put on when I point to the TV.

I often wake up now to shouts of ‘NANA’ or ‘DRINK’ or ‘CHOCOLATE BISCUIT’ which is such a bit step. He added in ‘CRISPS’ this week and just earlier today ‘I want drink’ once rather than just ‘DRINK’.

He also is learning animals.

I love him so so much. He charms everyone as he looks so angelic but hearing his voice more is just unbelievably special.

I didn't wake up this early on a Saturday morning to start blubbing OP, so just stop!

😉 He does indeed sound precious, and you are obviously a devoted mother. Happy for you both. Truly. 💜

This is beautiful, OP. He must love you so, so much 🥰
It really is the stuff like this that keeps us going. So happy for you x

GoodChat · 12/08/2023 06:40

It sounds like that was a massive milestone and now he's just going to keep going! His teachers will want to know what on earth has happened to him over the summer with all these new words 😁 what a beautiful thread 🥰

Merryoldgoat · 12/08/2023 06:52

He decided he was ready to start the day at 4.11am so I’m less well disposed to him today 🤣

This is lovely!

My sister adores him but he’s a bit hesitant with her. He met her boyfriend last week and after 5 minutes took him hand and led him to the trampoline - he just took to him.

I think kids, autistic ones especially, just get a feeling and if they like you that’s it!

You've made me want to cry! As a parent of an autistic son with very delayed speech, I remember the thrill all those years ago

Abracadabra12345 · 12/08/2023 09:44

What is amazing to me that in all those pre-verbal years, my son was able to understand his experiences. So as an adult he will point to the nursery he went to at 2 and say he used to go there and what he did there, and this is not us telling him since we didn't know what he did!

Oh @Merryoldgoat ❤️

I too have a non verbal 5 year old. No words at all, just vocalisations. I dream of this happening for us. I have this gut feeling that one day he'll be able to communicate with me, and be able to tell me he remembers these early days. I remind myself often when I feel frustrated. I want him to tell me that he remembers how patient and loving I was, and that thought keeps me going.
