He’s 5. He’s non verbal with Autism and has not shown any real inclination to talk.

This last 2/3 weeks he’s started ‘demanding’ food which is brilliant, but tiday he saw me and shouted ‘mummy!’.

I can’t believe it. I could cry ❤️

That is so awesome! I used to babysit a kid with Down’s syndrome who is non-verbal. He said Dada once to her boyfriend. He was unsure whether to say anything to her. She honestly didn’t care what the word was, the fact that he said a word was thrilling for her! I’m sure your face is beaming like hers was when she told me. I hope he learns other words very soon.

I knew another family with an autistic child who was non-verbal until he was 4. Once he started talking, he improved by leaps and bounds. By the time he was 6 or 7, he was mainstreamed and has no more problems with speech.

Yay! First step hopefully to a lot more verbal communication but hearing Mummy is definitely the best part. And just because a child is non-verbal it doesn't mean they lack intelligence or comprehension. My Dad who was "quiet" and non-verbal when he was small always joked he had nothing worth saying before the age of five...

AnneShirleysNewDress · 11/08/2023 19:54

Amazing ❤️ Thank you for sharing this. It's lovely to read something positive.

Twentytwothousand · 11/08/2023 19:56

My son is largely non verbal - he said “hi” to me spontaneously and I nearly expired. What a gorgeous moment

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 11/08/2023 19:57

Amazing! It's the best feeling in the world isn't it?My DS is almost 20 and at the very severe end having SLD too. When he says "Love you mum" to me (after I say I love you) it still makes me crumble. I don't know for sure that he knows what 'love' means as a word but I don't care really as I know he does. He first said it when he was mid teens.
