After watching the programme about the great extinction 250 million years ago it's made me think this planet will be far better without us and the sooner we become extinct the better.

MrsCarson · 10/08/2023 20:24

I'm going to watch it before I agree or disagree.

onefinemess · 10/08/2023 20:24

Yeah, I agree. Or at least there needs to be a significant reduction in the human population. Say 1 billion maximum. Whole continents need to be abandoned.

How great would it be if humans no longer lived in the Americas, or Africa, Australia and most of the Asian continent abandoned and returned to nature.

Humans could exist in small pockets of the most fertile remaining areas.

People need to stop having children.

HeddaGarbled · 10/08/2023 20:26

Well, it’s a frequently expressed opinion but I do wonder why we should care what the planet is like if we’re not living on it. I’d rather we looked after it better whilst we’re here.

Erm why are you choosing Europe as the place to be left populated?

I agree with you though that we need a LOT fewer humans.

Shirty48 · 10/08/2023 20:33

It’s only on mn that I ever see people longing for the end of the human race.

RandomMess · 10/08/2023 20:40

I think we will extinct ourselves eventually and the planet will recover.

CalistoNoSolo · 10/08/2023 20:43

I've long thought this, humans are destructive, greedy, cruel beyond belief and so arrogant they think all other species are there to to be exploited, and if they can't be exploited, annihilated. Interestingly, what was once a very fringe view of mine has become a lot more mainstream in the last few years.

Europe has the lowest biodiversity of all the continents, and is joined to Asia. So basically, pretty much all of what we have here is found elsewhere, but we could wreck Wurope without losing many species. Better to let a rainforest with millions of species recover, than for humans to populate say South America and let 'pointless, cold Europe' recover, no?

TheMissTerry · 10/08/2023 20:57

I've always said regarding climate change that the planet will survive- but we won't .

I binged the series and found it brilliant and fascinating and I absolutely love Chris packham

What channel is this on?

😂

I've heard of British exceptionalism, that must be European exceptionalism!

Soubriquet · 10/08/2023 21:04

Oh absolutely. The earth would be perfectly healthy without humans.

Is this a genuine post @onefinemess?

DojaPhat · 10/08/2023 21:13

Unless you're being sarcastic, and even then I'm not sure what about, you're pretty much casually advocating for the erasure of everyone who basically not white?

FridayNeverHesitate · 10/08/2023 21:20

There is the problem of nuclear power plants to consider, which require humans to pump water around the power plant and organise cooling. If humans became extinct, power plants would overheat and explode and there would be multiple Chernobyl scenarios around the world within a few months.

Racist misanthropy, how quaint.

SafeAsAMouse · 10/08/2023 21:23

It’s a great series. Makes everything seem very insignificant. The timescales are just unimaginable

Shirty48 · 10/08/2023 20:33

It’s only on mn that I ever see people longing for the end of the human race.

Yeah it's messed up if these people actually have children.

Or even if they're just looking forward to seeing all their fellow humans die miserably in pain.

Sociopaths I guess.

Wtf is this comment about

why not the americas or Europe??!!?

I thought I’d seen it all on mumsnet until this post

pompomdaisy · 10/08/2023 21:34

I personally care more about the planet than I do the human race. I love my kids but ultimately as a species we are pretty crap.

I think we are destructive and exploitative and animals and plants would thrive without us. Yes power stations would erupt then after a million years there would be little trace. it's worth watching the programme as you will see that earth has recovered from far worse.

I do think this forum actually does a lot in way of representing the views of a lot of people. Especially so as it's largely anonymous so people can speak freely without fear of reproach, and most posters tend to have a good grasp of politics etc. So when you see views like these aired, whilst I doubt that most people would welcome the end of the Earth, I do think a lot of people would fully subscribe to a reduction of global population and or other mandatory notions which would hugely degrade the quality of life for many many many groups of people.

Doesn’t the thought of your children being wiped out make you care more

I can’t say I get people who are blasé about the end if they have dc who will go down too

I get it more if those who say they care about the planet first didn’t have dc, plus it makes sense not to have them if you want population reduction.
