After watching the programme about the great extinction 250 million years ago it's made me think this planet will be far better without us and the sooner we become extinct the better.

Don't worry, it's coming OP.

JudgeAnderson · 10/08/2023 23:08

@L3ThirtySeven If we weren't here we couldn't kill any of these species by nuking them or degrading their environments. Just because we could destroy them doesn't mean they depend on us. We are not gods, just destructive apes.

There are a few species that have created niches for themselves within human agricultural activities etc but it's hardly a list totalling 1.2 million.

DojaPhat · 10/08/2023 23:08

Even all the 'humans' are bad for the planet. Which humans? All of them? Are some groups better or worse than others? How do we gauge who is 'better' or worse. The group think which almost always happily skips, jumps, indeed leaps over nuance is most intriguing.

Alopeciabop · 10/08/2023 23:11

Love the ironic image of people eating snacks whilst consuming energy to watch tv shows which took shit loads of energy to make, in their warm, lit, dry, heated houses with clean running water and their car sitting in the driveway saying we should all just eradicate ourselves because we consume too much.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/08/2023 23:11

What's the show?

For those who care more about the planet than their loved ones and other humans, how would you like it to pan out?

Are you suggesting leading a mass suicide across the world with billions of people?

Would you like the Governments to work together to put something in the air or water to kill billions or perhaps like COVID with no protection to kill people or to render people infertile?

Like how quickly would you like to see the death of billions of people?

And when we're gathering them in Europe cos it's shit and it's better to give the better places to Nature, what's the plan for keeping the diversity of humans? Like 100 people per ethnicity?

Theunamedcat · 10/08/2023 23:13

It's eugenics and killing off our old people

Also get rid of your car and go vegan

Fgs never breed that's killing the planet too

@pompomdaisy

Typical knee jerk reaction to this kind of programme.

I sometimes think the world would be a much better place if there was only, say, 7-8 million people on it, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

What do you suggest we do about it? Annihilate 99% of the world's human population? Are you going to volunteer to be first? Are you going to put your parents up for annihilation? Then your husband, then your children, then your grandchildren and nieces and nephews - if you have them?

Offer them first ??? Offer them as first sacrifices to save the planet. Are you going to do that?

I thought not.

Charrington · 10/08/2023 23:18

It’s fascinating how many people who aren’t explicitly religious, nonetheless find something to fill that gap. Environmentalism is every bit as destructive as all the other major religions with the same combination of making its acolytes feel exceptionally virtuous and also quite comfortable with inflicting death on a massive scale.

There is a moderate path.

There always was a moderate path that could have avoided torturing “heretics”, burning “witches”, and crusades. But the hard work and effort involved doesn’t suit those who want to indulge their bloodlust without guilt.

Those who think humanity needs destroying are revealing the worst of the species and their blindness to the higher qualities.

Hawkins009 · 10/08/2023 23:19

@pompomdaisy
Hell no, humans are born to conquer and rule the galaxies.

The galaxies will bow to humanity.

Badbudgeter · 10/08/2023 23:23

Id agree that the planet is overpopulated. Probably if you were to “thin the herd” in order to protect the planet you’d want to prioritise those that can live in harmony with the planet, not resource hungry, waste producing Europeans!

It is a well known physiological trait, politics aligning to political side is the main factor, environmentalism is a subset of that.

Much like religion there is a lot of ignoring inconvenient truths, like what is happening in the US with Biden, and what will happen with the Tories losing the next election and Labour being in control.

The vocal 'critical thinking' crowd is going to go through so many memory holes and unironically memory hole a lot of what they was so vehemently against.

Why is Europe exempt?

Yes, those of us who don't live in Europe would really like to know the answer to this?

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 11/08/2023 00:28

I don't wish for our demise but humans are very destructive to the planet. We will one day meet our demise though, just as many other species before us have, and the planet will continue on and flourish.

Horta · 11/08/2023 00:29

PoseyFlump · 10/08/2023 21:46

I've had many a real life conversation along these lines, especially during early covid times. Not everyone is burying their head in the sand about the state of the planet.

Off you pop then. Door's that way ==>

Horta · 11/08/2023 00:36

Pandaflop · 10/08/2023 22:22

Of course the planet would be better off without, we cause far more destruction than any other creature. Even the dominant animals who would rise to the top of the chain as it were wouldn't inflict the misery we have on the natural world. I think it's possible to acknowledge that truth and also hold your hands up and say selfishly I hope we aren't going anywhere just yet! Our recorded and known history is only a small dot on the history of earth anyway, things change and evolve and I highly suspect that before the sun implodes as all stars do and takes the planet out there'll be a period without us.

And yet, you live

The OP is not environmentalism, it's misanthropy.

Try again.

Somanycats · 11/08/2023 00:48

We don't have to do anything. Our numbers will fall. We don't have to kill our first born. We will stop having children if we can't afford them because resources are scarce and expensive. We are as a species already less fertile, require more medical intervention to survive than before. We will die in child birth, die of mumps, die of sepsis or starvation all the time when resources are so scarce its every man for himself.

Hawkins009 · 11/08/2023 01:08

DontMakeMeShushYou · 10/08/2023 23:52

Where's Thanos when you need him?

Where is logic and reason we need more humans to colonise the galaxies and build a galactic Empire for humanity.

pompomdaisy · 11/08/2023 04:51

I think, like with the great extinction episode over 250 million years ago our demise won't happen quickly. In that episode the volcanic episodes released gases and ash that heated the planet and that eventually killed 90% of the planet. Cockroaches and a few tenacious plants survived.

No one needs to kill off anyone in any weird Nazi way that folks are suggesting and getting all riled up about! It may take 50 000 years, I don't know, but that's short in the time of the earth. The process has already started. I think I won't worry about my kids, kids by that stage! All I'm saying is the planet will recover. As humans we are totally egocentric and think we actually do some good. We don't. The small things scientists do just merely observe the destruction we cause.

Just watch the programme!

This series is absolutely fantastic, one of the best I have ever seen on television. I think @pompomdaisy is correct and humans will probably become extinct, or numbers be drastically refuced, because of lack of resources e.g. water and oil. That is if we don't blast ourselves into oblivion beforehand. Either way Earth will survive and eventually regenerate.

L3ThirtySeven · 11/08/2023 06:44

The process has already started.
? If by process you mean extinction of humans, no it hasn’t. We are incredibly successful and the fact our population is stabilising only points to getting a few more million years.
