After watching the programme about the great extinction 250 million years ago it's made me think this planet will be far better without us and the sooner we become extinct the better.

Lucky for you that's exactly what we're doing

“It’s fascinating how many people who aren’t explicitly religious, nonetheless find something to fill that gap. Environmentalism is every bit as destructive as all the other major religions with the same combination of making its acolytes feel exceptionally virtuous and also quite comfortable with inflicting death on a massive scale.”
@Charrington what you are referring to isn’t environmentalism but eco-fascism. It has a long history already.

Id agree that the planet is overpopulated. Probably if you were to “thin the herd” in order to protect the planet you’d want to prioritise those that can live in harmony with the planet, not resource hungry, waste producing Europeans!

? Excuse me but Europeans consume magnitudes less than Australians, Americans, Canadians…

dramoy · 11/08/2023 06:50

People need to stop having children.

birth rates have fallen in many parts of the world. Having children for some is a biological desire & I would argue societies need youth to progress & innovate.

Where is logic and reason we need more humans to colonise the galaxies and build a galactic Empire for humanity.

I quite agree. Musk isn’t going to be sending rich tourists to operate his boring machines on Mars to start the underground colony now is he?

Quite, the global birth rate is the lowest it has ever been and has dropped to just above zero growth. It’s at 2.4 and zero growth is 2.1.

CloudyMcCloud · 10/08/2023 21:44

Doesn’t the thought of your children being wiped out make you care more

I can’t say I get people who are blasé about the end if they have dc who will go down too

I get it more if those who say they care about the planet first didn’t have dc, plus it makes sense not to have them if you want population reduction.

To be honest I think if anything was actually imminently going to happen to OP/ OP's kids, they'd change their tune. It's more just musing/ hypothetical I think.

dramoy · 11/08/2023 06:54

What do you suggest we do about it? Annihilate 99% of the world's human population? Are you going to volunteer to be first? Are you going to put your parents up for annihilation? Then your husband, then your children, then your grandchildren and nieces and nephews - if you have them?

Quite, the answer tends to be stop having dc. Often said by people in the west with their own dc who have a much bigger carbon footprint than a bigger family in parts if Africa. 🙄

bladebladebla1 · 11/08/2023 06:55

No shit

dramoy · 11/08/2023 06:55

And a big shift we are seeing in the West is the ageing population & how we are going to manage that.

dramoy · 11/08/2023 06:56

So your parents don't care about the planet?

bladebladebla1 · 11/08/2023 06:57

DojaPhat · 10/08/2023 23:08

Even all the 'humans' are bad for the planet. Which humans? All of them? Are some groups better or worse than others? How do we gauge who is 'better' or worse. The group think which almost always happily skips, jumps, indeed leaps over nuance is most intriguing.

I think it's the whites that are fine apparently

Ylvamoon · 11/08/2023 07:02

I think humans are very innovative, and life will carry on.

The bigger thred to our existence is climate change & pollution.

Seems to be the case!

Poontangle · 11/08/2023 07:03

I hate to have to break it to all those frothing about 'annihilation', but your DC are all going to die anyway.

dramoy · 11/08/2023 07:05

life will carry on but the ageing population is definitely an issue for parts of the West as we are seeing now. Look at the NHS, social care & our economy.

Not sure how you got there. But no I doubt they care about it first over their dc no. That’s different to the op - who says they care about the planet over the human race

People usually care about the planet because we need it to be ok for our dc, if they have them, well I do anyway

I agree with @jabberwokky when it came down to it the op would panic about their dc like anyone else and also that it’s ‘empty words’ in pp

And agree with the you first posts too

It might be bumpy on the way down to lower population but we’ll see AI do a fair bit, eg some replace workforce of some Drs and throughout sectors (it’s already starting, just, but will expand quickly)

dramoy · 11/08/2023 07:12

@CloudyMcCloud I was interested if your parents cared or not because obviously they still went onto have dc.
I think you can have dc & still care personally. Obviously the whole "humans are disgusting, we need to exterminate ourselves" is a lot of crap.

Yes it is. It comes up a fair bit on here, probably just easy to post for some reason.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/08/2023 07:34

Haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if it's already been mentioned, but there is a fascinating book called The World Without Us by Alan Weisman, which considers the scenario of all human disappearing suddenly, and how the earth would recover. I'd recommend it as a great read.

You start then...

BadNomad · 11/08/2023 07:46

Most species have the natural ability to reduce their reproduction rates in response to their environment, but unfortunately and stupidly/selfishly/arrogantly humans have created a money-based society where they need to keep producing humans despite the impact of/on the environment.

CaramelMac · 11/08/2023 07:58

Eventually, billions of years from now, the sun will die and the earth will disappear and there will be no record of it and no one will ever even know that humans existed or all the amazing things we did, so just enjoy your short time on earth while you can.

Charrington · 11/08/2023 07:59

Can I ask those who believe that annihilation or population reduction is good for the planet how you feel about terrorist attacks, genocide, and war?

This thread is disturbing - some people advocating mass murder and others suicide.
