To ask would you buy a used bra?

I'm trying to be more environmentally conscious and buying clothes off of vinted and weird question I know but there's loads of brass on vinted and I was talking to DH about it and he thinks it's a bit weird but at the same time .. they're just boobs?

Like I've bought some dresses off there and who knows they could have worn them braless or whatever.

I just can't decide how weird it is, so would you buy second hand bras?

Obviously knickers are another matter, those are still being bought new! Grin

I can definitely afford new clothes, but I love the thrill of getting something new from a charity shop and loving it, knowing I spent about £3 on it! At work people compliment me on my clothes and are always amazed when I say I got it from a charity shop. Donating is great, but they only make money when people buy!
Vinted is a dream, yesterday I bought a little black dress that I've been desperate for. I already own it but managed to ruin it in the wash (blame my kids and chewing gum....) But now I have another on its way to me, despite the fact that it was last season.
When I was a kid we always used to get hand-me-downs from my mum's best friend, I just don't see it any differently. I know it's each to their own, but I just cannot see anything wrong with second hand clothes, especially in a world where we should be reducing our energy/carbon footprint.

I would have no problem with this whatsoever if it was one I knew my correct size in and like new. Old bras I wouldn’t because they change shape and I need to feel right in them or everything else goes to pot.

gamerchick · 05/08/2023 20:22

No. You don't know how they've been cared for. Bras hate heat and are only supposed to last a few month anyway. You're not even supposed to run them through a washer.

If you want to look lopsided then crack on.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/08/2023 20:22

I had sold loads of bras on vinted. New with tags or ones I didn’t really like and didn’t wear much. They sell so quickly which leads me to think that generally people do buy second hand bras.

MysteryBelle · 05/08/2023 20:26

No. Nor used panties or bathing suits. Grotesque.

When supposed environmentalists like Leo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, and Barack and Michelle Obama downsize from their giant heated and cooled mansions, give up their huge pools and endless private jets and chauffeured SUVs, then I might consider the possibility of entertaining the idea of buying a used bra.

ThewaytoAmarula · 05/08/2023 20:28

Yes and I have done several times. I know my size in the brands I like and people tend to sell bras that haven't been worn much because they don't fit them properly. My bras also last longer than a few months and I'm confident I don't look "lopsided " 😆

This made me laugh. That's absolutely fair enough!

Yes and I have. Nips and skin aren’t gross. Obviously should be in almost nee condition though. I wash everything, secondhand or new, before wearing anyway!

Thamantha · 05/08/2023 20:33

Yes and i do. I'm a bigger size, meaning a new bra can easily be £40+, whereas i can find a bra with little wear being sold second hand for under £10. They are clean and functional, and i don't think of it as any different than second hand clothes.
I would not buy and wear second hand knickers, or now i think about it socks, though.

Fuchsiaplant · 05/08/2023 20:34

No. Mainly because I feel they mould to the shape of the user. Also seems too intimate somehow.

BoredAndNotDomesticated · 05/08/2023 20:36

I suspect it one of those issues that isn't totally rational. People who buy second hand will never understand why others don't. And those that refuse to buy second hand will never understand why others are happy too. It just comes down to whatever you are happy with.

smalbert · 05/08/2023 20:38

Yes as I have very large boobs and am not prepared to pay the full price

How long do they have to be useful for you to decide their crap?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 05/08/2023 20:39

Hell no.

mrsm43s · 05/08/2023 20:39

I'd be happier buying a used bra, than any kind of close fitted trouser/jean in this age of thongs. Far more chance of yukkiness from an inadequately enclosed bum/fanny than from chest skin.

ZolaBudd · 05/08/2023 20:39

coreas · 05/08/2023 20:10

I don't buy second bad clothes, so no.

Well done for coming onto the thread

MiMiPies · 05/08/2023 20:41

There's definitely a mixed response which is interesting.

I'm glad we can all unite in not buying used knickers though Grin

No because bras are worn much closer to your skin than other clothes and I’d think there would be more likely to be skin cells in the underwire bit and under the arms so it just seems a bit too gross.

Some people buy used knickers, but I don’t think it’s because they’re being thrifty 🤮

Ghostlight · 05/08/2023 20:45

No, mostly because I am a more unusual size and I have never seen any my size going, also as its a supportive item it feels more important that it fits right and isnt stretched out in weird ways.

But also in my head I think gross no its underwear. Which is silly as I wear second hand tops but to me I know I would buy second hand shoes but I wouldn't buy second hand socks as they are underwearish.

I don’t know if you think that factories that produce clothing are hygienic, because they’re really not I’ve been in there.

just wash the clothes for God sake.

TokyoSushi · 05/08/2023 20:53

Yes! I've bought a couple of sports bras off Vinted, hot wash when you receive them and off you go.

I draw the line at knickers though!

Sweetladyjane · 05/08/2023 20:53

I have. I either buy new with tags or ones that are in excellent condition. I find it hard to find bras in my size in shops so stick with brands I know fit me.

Swanswam · 05/08/2023 20:55

Yes, and I have done. I have 3 bras from Vinted, all lightly worn before I bought them. They all fit really well and we’re less than £6 each including postage. Happy with them and would do it again.
